Got to fish solo today in the Derwent, the Bream action was exceptional. If you haven't used Cranka Crabs, give them a go. They catch plenty when lifted off the bottom. Best used when fishing from a boat as they are painfully expensive to break off on the oysters. I usually fish them in 2-3m of water when the Bream are being fussy and schooled up. The bigger fish were accounted for using the Daiwa Presso Minnow 60F in the Cali Golden Trout pattern. I fished the rising tide along the shallow rocky banks. Biggest Bream was 37.5cm TTF. One of the biggest assets to chasing Bream from a boat is using the Garmin Panoptix sonar. Look it up on YouTube.

Barry was on a quest to get his first Sea Runners and Southern Black Bream. All boxes ticked and then some. We used soft Plastics and the Nories Laydown Minnow to account for Trout. For the Bream we had great success using Cranka Crabs in addition to the above mentioned lures. Biggest Bream was 37.5cm, best Trout 54cm.

A couple from a day on Woods Lake. We had a good day on Woods, initially we dredged them up on sinking fly lines using a version of the Cat Fly. Then after a sore arm of a thousand casts we used the Nories Lay down Minnow BR 71H

I had a short afternoon session on Penstock last Friday. Conditions not ideal, sunny and a light breeze. With the odd fish rising to Orange Spinners the challenge was on. After two enquiries and one busted off, finally I saw one cruise under my fly and casually sip it down. A beautifully conditioned Brown of 50cm. My spinner imitation is a very simple tie on a Kamasan B160 size 16 wide gape hook.

So Arthur's Lakes, how has it been fishing lately. A Guides perspective.
It has produced really well, the best day I had was thirty fish, the worst was three. The weather has been the biggest factor. Cool and overcast being the best, hot and sunny not so good. For the fly angler the Black & Orange Shrek with the red body, also the Cat Fly (my bastardised version). Use these on a slow retrieve in 1 to 2 metres of water pause and hang at the end of the retrieval. If they are rising, go the shaving brush. I tie all three patterns, see photos. DM or call me if you want any.
For the lure Angler, who are most welcome on my trips, the Nories Laydown Minnow is a must , see the photos. Cast around the timber with a medium retrieve and occasionally stop start the lure. They are a shallow running suspending lure that only goes down about 60-70cm. Use the bright one on dull days and the opaque body on very bright days. When fishing them lazily I.E. trolling, 2.5 knots is the sweet spot and target areas with a depth of 2 metres. Regularly check for weeded up lures as it will happen trolling such shallow water, they have a really tight action and it can be hard to see the rod tip vibrate at times. If you buy them be prepared for the cost, at $32 it hurts a bit, especially if you lose them.
Final advice, if the weather is forecast to be over 25c, get out early, give midday a rest and have another go after 3:30. Keep an eye on the water temp, if it gets to 20c it will be a very slow day.

While the weather has not been kind the fishing has been exceptional. Pulling wets and casting lures has given the clients some memorable days. Here's a few recent captures.
The last photo is Reef Nicholls who we hosted as part of the Make a Wish Foundation for the day. It was part of his family trip to Tassie. Reef is a big fan of all things fishing and loved to watch people casting a fly rod. A big thanks to Steve Bax from Spot on Fishing Connection who donated a practice fly rod to Reef as a momento of his visit. This was the highlight of Reefs day with us.

I can't remember the last time before today I fished Arthur's. Well it was fantastic, dredged up a dozen on the wet fly. Really surprised by the size and condition of them. Let's hope the dry fly fishing heats up this season.

Well we hoped we would catch one and while targeting the humble Flathead we caught this Kingfish. Now to save a thousand questions we caught it in Cornelian Bay, in 3m of water, bait was a Zman 3inch TRD HogZ. It was just before low tide and again we were only going for Flatties when it smashed the HogZ. It was 55-60cm long. We also caught, Flatties, Salmon, Mackerel and a few Bream. Biggest Bream was 38cm
