Tasmania Fire Service has declared a Total Fire Ban from 2am Sunday, 3 March until 2am Monday, 4 March 2024 for the Southern Region of the state.

The Total Fire Ban applies to the municipalities of: Brighton, Central Highlands, Clarence, Derwent Valley, Glamorgan Spring Bay, Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon Valley, Kingborough, Sorell, Southern Midlands, and Tasman.

A total fire ban means it is illegal to light or to cause a fire in the open.

This includes (but is not limited to) incinerators, burn-offs, campfires, fire pots, and wood-fueled barbecues.

Operating commercial appliances such as pizza ovens, conducting hot works, forest operations and use of machinery will be permitted, provided they adhere with the relevant guidelines available on the TFS website: https://www.fire.tas.gov.au/about/rules-during-fire-permit-periods-and-total-fire-bans

People are reminded to check all fires they may have had on their property, including any campfires to ensure they are fully extinguished and to check their Bushfire Plan.

More information on Total Fire Bans and incidents in your area can be found at www.fire.tas.gov.au, TasAlert.com, or by listening to ABC radio.

Wintry blast brings Road Weather and Bushwalker Alerts

Areas of Tasmania have received significant snowfalls in the last 24 hours and more falls are expected state-wide this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Road Weather Alert for snow on roads above 300m for Tuesday 7 June and above 500 metres early Wednesday 8 June, in parts of the Western, Central Plateau, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.
This may lead to road closures. There is also a Bushwalkers Weather Alert for the Western and Central Plateau forecast districts.

With the weather and road conditions so changeable, PWS urges parks visitors to monitor condition reports before setting out. Please check the PWS page, website alerts, or feel free to email or call the relevant field or visitor centre before heading out to parks and reserves over the next few days. www.parks.tas.gov.au/about-us/contact-us/contact-details

Please be aware of conditions and adjust your plans if necessary. Please be alert and stay safe.

Explore the kooparoona niara Cultural Trail, which features native plants and artwork inspired by Tasmania's Aboriginal culture.

A highlight for many visitors is the Yarning/Healing Circle - a truly spiritual place where nine limestone boulders represent nine Aboriginal nations of Tasmania.

This is a place where community can come together as one and share stories, open lines of communication and increase our knowledge.

Tasmanian Aboriginal basket makers are still respected for their skill and creativity, as shown at The First Tasmanians: Our Story exhibition at the Queen Victoria Art Gallery.

Used for carrying materials including food, ornaments, and stone tools, the baskets were and still are made from irises, lilies, rushes and reeds

A slow fire is used to heat the stems, then they are split, stripped, rolled to create strong thread, and woven to create a distinctive weave.

Interesting fact: the weave of Tasmanian Aboriginal baskets and the twist of their fibres are woven in the opposite direction to baskets made in mainland Australia.

Our Cataract Gorge tour guests discovering the iconic bush tucker staple, the wattle grub (the Tasmanian version of a witchetty grub).

Generally smaller in size, and sweeter in flavour than the big sister witchetty grub, they’re best eaten raw or lightly cooked by using hot ashes. These raw edible insects taste like almonds and when cooked, the outside becomes crisp and golden brown like a roast chicken while the inside remains light yellow.

Our Cataract Gorge Cultural Trail also includes a personalised tour of The First Tasmanians: Our Story exhibition at the Queen Victoria Art Gallery, Royal Park.

Under the guidance of the QVMAG Aboriginal Reference Group, we are humbled by the opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people who lived on this island 40,000 years ago.

Sharing stories of creation, exploring various tools used for hunting and daily life, and learning about perspectives on climate change and astronomy alongside our local and interstate guests is a treasured legacy.

The white flag iris (a native species in Tasmania) is currently in abundance at Launceston's Cataract Gorge.

As the petals opened in spring and summer, they once served as a warning to Tasmanian Aboriginal people that snakes were out and about.

This is a great tip next time you are walking in nature, to be mindful if you do come across a flowering white flag iris!

The iris leaves were also woven into baskets, a craft Tasmanian Aboriginal women still practice, ensuring the tradition is passed on to future generations.

A highlight over the past few months has undoubtedly been the launch of our Cataract Gorge Cultural Tour.

The opportunity to showcase the rich Tasmanian Aboriginal culture which dates back over 40,000 years, and their engagement with the land and water, has been incredibly humbling.

Here's a look at what our interstate and intrastate guests have experienced.

Running along the low wall of the Kooparoona Niara Cultural Trail is the signature stone mosaic created by local artist, Niecy Brown and Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Dawn Blazely.

This artwork brings the history of the vibrant Meander River to life through artistic storytelling, with rounded river stones symbolising the yarning circle, meeting places, and the abundant wildlife of the estuary.
