One of the first times I've ever seen an article about this. Not getting back to candidates is something that really bugs me about the recruitment industry, especially when it's so easy to do so with all the technology available. Good article Greg!

We are rightly proud of our placements. Our successes. But what of the 'fish John West rejects'? This is an important idea. You are really a 'rejecter', not a recruiter. Read why

Something I read today. I detest this. I can honestly say I never did this once when I was a recruiter. We would advertise saying "we often have roles in the areas of ... if you are looking for this type of role get in touch. Different to pretending you have a specific role when that is a complete lie.

ANDREW Tan spent 18 months looking for a job before taking up his new senior IT role in Melbourne last week. He says he often had the sneaking suspicion that some of the jobs he applied for weren’t actually real.

This is pretty consistent with what has always been reported over the twenty years I've been in our industry. Technology (or lack of in an organisation) usually also rates a mention but think that work/life balance - particularly in cities like Sydney where the commute can be a nightmare - will become a bigger reason why people will leave. I've been rolling out a huge training project over the past 18 months and when I was doing this full time the company I'm consulting to let me work from home two days a week. With a little one at home this made such an impact on my decision to keep renewing my contract with them.

I agree with all these points except one. Recruiters may not spend a huge amount of time searching for people's social media presence but line managers and/or others in the recruitment process do. Get your privacy settings in order and tidy up any social media accounts before you apply for jobs.

Employment or background screening can seem like an invasive and time consuming hassle, particularly as it occurs just as new employment is right...

I'm doing a longer term training contract at the moment. The place I'm working at has breast feeding rooms, a Childcare centre on site that takes children from 6 weeks and children are encouraged to visit their parents at work. To say I was impressed by this was an understatement. They also allow flexible working hours which many people take advantage of. What a shame more companies don't follow this example.

A COUPLE of weeks ago I attended a lunch for mothers who run their own businesses — so-called mumpreneurs — though I don’t particularly like that term. It sounds like a collective noun for a bunch of women who have nothing better to do than crochet baby blankets and sell them on Etsy.

I have seen over the past 20 years or so, the changing face of employment. When I started in the employment industry, there were many "junior" "entry level" roles that I recruited for, where companies would train on the job. I hardly see any advertised now, at least not full time ones where there's a genuine chance of a career path. This is why students enrol is massively oversupplied university degrees - in the hope of getting a reasonable job with reasonable money as now even administrative roles in larger organisations most often require someone with a degree. Ridiculous in my humble opinion.

http://www.smh.com.au/small-business/managing/the-venture/why-do-students-enrol-in-massively-oversupplied-university-degrees-20160810-gqp2u2.html

Community, industry and tertiary education sector must ensure students make informed decisions in course choice.

It is true that when we are not working and looking for a new role, we're likely to feel more pressure to accept poor recruitment processes and standards from employers, and even when we've been treated badly we can sometimes feel demotivated that we weren't hired. This article highlights 3 signs that you were lucky you didn't get that job! http://ow.ly/tLAd302x6tO

Jobs of the future for Australia is definitely something that people (school leavers in particular) need to think about. I don't know what the jobs will be, but I do think that they'll predominantly be in service industries and speaking another language such as Chinese will be useful since many of our business transactions will take place with companies located in this country. What are your thoughts about jobs of the future? http://www.smh.com.au/business/workplace-relations/jobs-of-the-future-the-2016-census-will-include-roles-that-didnt-exist-before-20160727-gqeozd.html

Census analysts are expecting a huge rise in new, entrepreneurial jobs that didn't exist the last time we stopped to record the state of our nation.

A good article written for students which could apply for both school and work.

Applying for leadership positions at school can be both exciting as well as daunting.

It takes courage to expose yourself to the rigours of the application process and ultimately letting your family, peers and staff know the outcome.
