The best thing about an urban environment is being able to be pleasantly surprised by what you find behind closed doors - even if you are locals like us! This is a lesson Culture Scouts experienced at the end of last year when we stumbled across one of Sydney’s best art collections in a two-storey...
With Sydney's changing face due to building there is still a chance to see the public art. Some has been moved and some has been changed but there is still a huge range of great art within our city. Contact Gordon to book a tour.
Just looking at some artwork by Reko Rennie. He is a very talented and very contemporary aboriginal artist. He has done several major public works and was the feature artist on the Opera House for Vivid this year. He also painted the building on Taylor Square in Darlinghurst and was featured in Venice this year too. I think his work is excellent and is well represented in all the major institutions NGV, AGNSW, NGA, AGWA etc check out his art. Well worth it. He is also just been named as a finalist in the Sulman Prize.
ART EXHIBITION VISITS ON SATURDAY, 23rd January 2016. I have organised for anyone that wants to come to the Grayson Perry Exhibition at the MCA followed but a art walk from the MCA to the AGNSW to then see The Greats Exhibition. If you would like to come along it only costs the price of admission and if you buy the Art Pass it is even cheaper to see tow wonderful exhibitions. The bonus will the the Public Art talk on the walk between the galleries. Contact me if you would like to come along or visit my Website www.sydneyartwalks.com.au and email me to be placed on the list. Hope you can make it.
Yesterday I visited the MCA to see the Grayson Perry exhibition. It is well worth getting into the city to see the works. Both the ceramics and tapestries are amazing. The catalogue is well produced too. Hope you get a chance to see it before it ends. Gordon xx
Too all those that love art I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and art filled 2016. I am planning to getting more art visits together for 2016 so keep in touch. All the very best and lots of love Gordon xx
NOT high art but fun to do on an I-pad up in GOMA at the Matisse Exhibition a few years ago.
Don't forget Sculpture By The Sea is on and always worth the effort to visit it. Good luck with parking ! Gordie x
Some public art in Vancouver. Enjoy Gordie xx
Art is wonderful and so is nature. These are at Banff.
Some of the wonderful art from the Getty Centre in Los Angeles. Hope you enjoy. A must if you are in LA.
If you get a chance to visit the Middelheim Open Air Museum at Antwerp it is an amazing sculpture park and such beautiful well kept garden setting. The art is wonderful and there is so much of it you need about 5 hours to get around to see most of it. I spent all day there and still could have spent longer. Hope you enjoy some of the photos. Gordon
Now in Brussels. The Contemporary Galleries are HUGE !!!! Wonderful spaces and the art is good too. Found a young ceramic artist called Eric Croes from here in Brussels. His work is well worth viewing.
Antony Gormley work "EXPOSURE" it is well worth the visit !!!
About an hour by train from Amsterdam.
A day spent in Rotterdam visiting some great gallery spaces and wondering the streets viewing the public art. A really modern city but well worth the visit as the collections are excellent and cover traditional as well as contemporary art.
Off to see more galleries but at Rotterdam tomorrow. Amsterdam has been really good. Wonderful place to come for art but the commercial galleries are not the same as in Pairs or even at home in Australia. A little surprised at the lack of them and the works they have. Some really great gallery spaces especially "Grimm" which is an old garage space but makes a wonderful gallery.
Visited the Van Gogh Museum today. Some wonderful works but really a little disappointing as I think I was expecting more. I have seem some of his works around other galleries and they have been just as impressive. Still worth a visit if you are in Amsterdam. Weather a little over the place today.
Again managed to ticket off some more Vermeer paintings from the bucket list while we were at The Hague.
Wonderful day spend at the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam. Wonderful works and managed to ticket off another three Vermeer works from my bucket list. Enjoy these images including one Vermeer. Gordon
Just arrived in Amsterdam and found a great Alexander Calder large sculpture outside the Rijks Museum and also visited Rembrandt's House. The house was well worth the visit and to see where he actually lived and worked was quite moving.
Been looking at some of the Jeffrey Smart works that are up for auction. MY favourite is probably one of the simplest ones "Bicycles, Bondi" shame that I STILL have not won lotto to be able to buy it. Keep buying the tickets except they keep selling me the wrong ones. Still a lovely painting and so well composed.
Called into Brenda May Gallery today to have another viewing of Todd Fuller's latest "hand drawn film" titled "LUCKY STAR" which is about the cutest dog wishing to be a 'space dog'. Great work and such a moving animation. Todd should be proud of his considerable efforts with this artwork. If you can make sure you check it out at Brenda May Gallery 2 Danks St, Waterloo.
When I was in WA I saw a great show at PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Art) there was an exhibition curated by an artist Andrew Nicholls. I followed up his work and managed to get a work on paper by Andrew Nicholls from Turner Gallery WA. I feel he is an artist on the rise and one to have in any collection.
Kevin McKay is having a show at Brenda May Gallery, Danks St, Waterloo starting on Tuesday, 17th March. He won the William Fletcher Fellowship to Rome a few years ago and is an artist to watch and get in while he is very affordable. This body of works are all set around the Waterloo-Redfern area and are well worth a visit to the gallery (and a purchase if I were you).
If you are in the Brisbane area make sure you get into GOMA to see the Yayoi Kusama "infinity Room" it is amazing !!!! Not sure for how much linger it will be there but something not to miss. On the lower level there is also her "obliteration Room" which is a lot of fun. Gordon xx
For all the art lovers out there I hope you can support your artists and enjoy great exhibitions and a happy healthy 2015 to you all. I have lots of art plans so keep in touch as they involve exhibitions as well as an end of year trip to Hobart to visit MONA. Take care Gordie x
To all my Art friends I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a full year for 2015 with lots of exciting and interesting art. Some wonderful art out there so make the effort to visit the galleries, studios and events and support the artists. Love Gordon x
Another exhibition that is currently running and again well worth visiting is at Robin Gibson Gallery. See the NZ sculptor Terry Stringer's new works. They range in size from small works to huge bronze works suitable for either indoor or outdoor areas. They make wonderful focal points for your art collection and provide you with unique views depending on the direction you approach the artwork.
Did my shift at the Art Gallery of NSW today and got to see the next show "Pop to Popism" DEFINITELY work the price of admission. Great works by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indigo, Andy Warhol and my favourite David Hockney. It is on until the 1st March but don't wait that long get in soon and visit often.
