Oh my, how the months of our year-long sabbatical are flying by. So many life events including a roller coaster ride that we didn’t expect… and here we are about to move into the 2nd half of 2024. The only way is up, right!
Well, that’s except for the current status of our website, which is down 🤣 But hopefully, not for too long.
If you happen to try to visit our website, it’s not there at the moment. All you’ll see is a message to say that the ‘server can’t be found’. This is because we are moving our site AND creating a new look in the process. We are aiming to have a page or two up and running again very soon.
In the meantime, we continue the pause from our photography tour and tuition offerings for a few months more, though we remain contactable by email - so if you are wanting to send a message to us, you’ll find our email address in the about section of our Facebook business profile.
How is your year of photo-taking progressing? We’d love to hear how you’re going and see a photo you’ve created too if you would like to share one or two of your images here.
I created this photo during a little weekend getaway to the Freycinet Peninsula that Roy and I took advantage of having time for in April.

Mesmerised by so much colour!
Lady Aurora put on a fabulous display tonight. Until I can get to processing photos from my main camera, here’s one of a number of iPhone snaps I shot as well.

Says the Grey-Shrike Thrush...
"Ooh thank you Coreena, I'm loving this new bird bath to splash about in!"
During our dry summer (which continues even now, in autumn) I sought out a low-cost birdbath option for our feathered friends. So off to Bunnings I went, and I found some shallow plant bowls that are the perfect size and depth - they were not much more than $15-$20 each if I recall. Proper birdbaths were at the time over $100 each, some even more costly too.
However, each bowl has a drain hole... which of course is not conducive to keeping water in the bath.
The hot dry conditions had me feeling sorry for the birds while I pondered what to do. So, I plugged the holes up with silicone for a speedy and temporary measure. And covered the plugged hole with perching rocks. No harm in trying, right?!
I also remembered an episode of Weekend Birder podcast on the topic of establishing a bird bath. Seasoning a new bird bath to remove the smell of clay or manufacturing and any human aroma helps to make it more appealing to the birds, and all-round more bird-friendly. Let's face it, us humans wouldn't use a bath we didn't like the look or smell of, would we?!
So I 'seasoned' this new bath and an array of small to medium birds found their new bath sooner than I expected and they've been loving it since (well, maybe except for the time when a possum had pooped in it overnight 🙄).
It's a great temporary birdbath option if nothing else.
Excitement is brewing for our Bird Photography Experiential Workshop - Tamar Wetlands (nr Launceston), Tasmania next weekend (Saturday 9th December).
This workshop won't be available for a while, so if you want to enhance your skills for photographing birds in their natural habitat ... well, there's no time like the present!
We'd love to see you there ... and so will the birds!
Possessing an exceptional talent for vocal mimicry, did you know that the Superb Lyrebird has the remarkable ability to imitate the sound of a camera shutter?
But that's not all; they are highly skilled virtuosos, capable of mimicking a wide range of sounds from their surroundings, including other birds, machinery, and even alarms. It's truly fascinating! However, at times, their mimicry abilities can leave you wondering or feeling a bit perplexed.

Yesterday I joined a BirdLife Tasmania outing at Risdon Brook Park, just outside Hobart. It was a breezy morning and a bit chilly with wind chill factored in 🥶 But as we got walking along the track we were protected from the wind a little and got to see a nice variety of birds (and a furry friend or two, too 🥰)
The main objective of these outings is to notice, observe and record the sightings of the different bird species that can be seen in each location. Birdlife Tasmania maintains the records for ongoing research. It's a great opportunity for anyone interested in birds to learn about the many species and better understand the habitats they can be found. Of course those of us with cameras take some photos so they can add them to their records.
Here are my favourites of several photos that I took during the morning. ~ Coreena ~
Photo 1:
🦜 TL: Scarlet Robin, male
🦜TR: Flame Robin, female (at least I believe it to be, now that I've looked at my photos).
🦜BL: Dusky Robin (snacking on a grub)
🦜BR: Yellow-rumped Thornbill (aka Butterbum)
Photo 2:

It's not a test, but can you see that one has a shallower depth of field than the other? If so, where do you notice it the most?

Amid the chaos of home renovations I, Coreena, received a very special delivery of this beautiful book in the post. Setting it aside safely until I could give it the time and attention I felt it deserves, I’ve now had the chance to sit down with a cuppa and flip through the pages. And I have done so in complete awe.
‘Asia’s Greatest Wildlife Santuaries’ is authored by F***y Lai and Bjorn Olesen, published by Tuttle Publishing is a wonderful showcase of to the diversity of birds and wildlife in a region I have yet to travel (one day🤞).
OK, so it’s not about Tasmania so why am I posting about this book… Well, Bjorn joined us for a couple of guided tours, Maria Island and Mt Field National Park during his Tasmanian Odyssey to photograph the birds and wildlife of Tasmania. I can say that I am honoured to have met him to share to captivating birds and wildlife of Tasmania and learn about his photography travels and pursuits at the same time.
I really enjoy following the work that our guests create long into the future (as best I can), and this book how sits with my collection of books and field guides that showcase the birds and wildlife around the world, thus allowing me to flip through the pages whenever I wish. Not only this though. Finding inspiration in other photographers’ work when one’s life is so busy and personal photography pursuits are placed on hold for a short while.
If you love following bird and wildlife photographers exploring a diversity of countries and regions, then I invite you to join me in following Bjorn’s work at Bjorn Olesen Wildlife Photography. Bjorn has been featuring his work from his travels in Romania lately and the birds there are incredible too - so much to discover in our diverse and delightful world.
Or, maybe you’ll consider to purchasing this book. I know Bjorn will be grateful if you do because the book has been produced to raise funds in support of BirdLife International for their conservation projects in Asia.
OK, I’m off to flip through a few more pages over a cuppa before heading out to lead another photography retreat for the next 4 days.

Gees that 5 hours felt like it went faster than the click of a shutter!
Today’s photography workshop at Bangor Vineyard Shed was a lot of fun with a great group of shutterbugs keen to learn and explore with their cameras.
We started with a tutorial over afternoon tea, ventured out on a guided photo shoot on Bangor Farm, returned to the vineyard for sunset over the vines, and grazed on indulgent and delicious food which for some was paired with a lovely glass of Bangor wine.
A big thanks to Matt and Vanessa of Bangor for inviting us to conduct this workshop for another wonderful event hosted by them. It would be great to do it again some time.

Cloud patterns and vibrant colours of an autumn sunrise in Tasmania.
For me, this is what signifies when autumn has truly arrived.
This sequence of photos was taken this morning (Friday 10th March) before the colour retreated to become a more muted tone, and not long after that, it all disappeared.
📷 Sunrise shoots are a real treat during our overnight tours and retreats. While an early morning wake-up call is often a challenge for many, I know they thank me for it later, after they witness such beauty and serenity, returning with their stunning photos to admire. 🌅

Across 2 separate 4-hour Private Photography Tuition sessions, Deb achieved her main objective to better understand her relatively new Fuji X-T4 mirrorless camera. She also wanted to gain a greater understanding of an array of camera settings and photography techniques to improve her photography.
And I believe we can indulge quietly knowing that Deb is one very happy shutterbug and, more importantly, she’s very excited to explore Tasmania’s great outdoors and photography nature’s beauty.
The sound of Little Penguins
It may be the dark of night... but it certainly ain't quiet!
(Turn volumn up)
It was an overnight private photo-oriented tour to Bruny Island with a couple of lovely ladies from the USA and they specifically asked to spend time at the penguin colony. They were absolutely thrilled to have experienced the sight and sound of the smallest species of penguin... and of course using a specialty wildlife torchlight, many photographs were captured too. (See our previous post with another video with the visual of penguins waddling ashore).

Watch where the ants run - it’s quite a strategic way to get out of the way of this Echidna’s sticky tongue...
We certainly love where we live - it’s so wonderful that our resident wildlife critters are happy to share their habitat with us.

Shutterbug Walkabouts is owned and operated by Roy and Coreena Vieth. Both have a great deal of knowledge and passion for Tasmania’s natural environment and being nature photographers too, it was a natural progression to start a business that offers an experience to share this knowledge and skill with others.
Roy picked up his first camera when he was just eight years of age and his technical expertise is second to none. While mostly self-taught, his natural talent and ability has shaped him into an acclaimed landscape and nature photographer with many state and national awards for his photographic creativity and image quality. Roy is also an accredited professional photographer with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography so you can be assured of his proven experience and technically capabilities.
Before starting Shutterbug Walkabouts, Roy mentored family, friends and work colleagues who wanted to learn photography. He showed them how to better use their cameras, think about what they were photographing and the settings to use the the best possible photo. He is very patient and is definitely generous about how much knowledge and experience he shares. Roy is our principal photography tutor/mentor for our private photography tuition, weekend retreats and small group workshops.
Coreena has more than 20 years of tour guiding experience, not only in Tasmania but also across Australia. Before the concept of Shutterbug Walkabouts was devised, Coreena often found herself offering guidance to travellers about the photos they were taking while on tour. Her passion for wildlife, the natural environment and history features significantly in all the tours and experiences she leads. Photography has always complemented her interest in travel and exploring the outdoors but after Roy became her photography mentor, her photographic knowledge and skills simply catapulted where they are today. Over the past few years Coreena has received awards that demonstrate her talent to produce images of a professional standard. Coreena leads Shutterbug Walkabouts’ photo-oriented tours - experiences that allow you plenty of time with your camera as you explore the iconic and less-touristy attractions, national parks and historic sites, while learning about all things Tasmanian along the way. Coreena also assists Roy during retreats and workshops as a supporting tutor/mentor.
