There's an old saying that 'you get what you pay for', and compost toilet systems are no different. To be fair, it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between two systems that look very similar in form. It's only when you take a closer look inside that you realise they are vastly different in function and efficiency.

The Alectura is a great example. While it may seem similar in form to other less expensive systems, it is far from similar in terms of function, efficiency and ease of maintenance. Please share.

There are some companies in Australia that call their compost toilets 'continuous process' systems, but they're not.
A box with a vent that collects waste is not a continous process anything. It's a box.

The waste may eventually turn to compost .... eventually ... but until then it be wet and smelly because it's anaerobic (no oxygen) like a septic tank.

It pays to know the difference.

"Since the Clivus Multrum doesn't divert urine, when I sat down, I didn't have to aim. The biggest tangible difference between it and a conventional toilet was the breeze—which, if you're not expecting it, can be a little surprising. But there was no odor, no wood chips, no worry that in a week or two or three, I'd be responsible for handling the waste I'd just produced.
The experience was remarkably unremarkable. It required so little thought that when I got up, I didn't even need to turn back to flush."

For some eco-pioneers, solving the sludge problem means getting their hands dirty, writes Catherine Price from Grist, part of the Guardian Environment Network

Misinformation on compost toilets is rife on the Internet.

If you Google "Why do composting toilets not smell?" you get "They separate your business into solids and liquids"
WRONG - they don't smell because the ventilation system extracts odours.

If you Google "How often do you empty a compost toilet?" you get answers like "approximately every 3 weeks".
WRONG - it's between 3 weeks to never, depending on the system. The original Clivus Multrum continuous process systems are never emptied.

For accurate advice you should talk to an experienced compost toilet supplier.

How does a compost toilet system actually work?

Good composting systems don't just collect waste in a container. They use airflow, oxygen and aerobic bacteria to turn the waste into compost.

Waterless toilet systems offer a sensible solution for isolated and/or environmentally sensitive sites. VIROtech installed this public toilet amenity at Wonboyn in NSW just 20 metres from an estuary used for oyster farming. The facility is free-standing with no connection to grid power, sewerage or water services.

The amenity utilises a Clivus Multrum composting system and the building is constructed using highly durable 'Fibre Reinforced Polymer' (FRP) framework, and engineered to C2 cyclone rating (225kph winds). A 'Zero Discharge Unit' (ZDU) creates a closed loop system which eliminated discharge to the environment.

We've been saying it for years - flushing toilets just turn good water into waste

Researchers have mapped the discharge of global wastewater — treated, septic, and raw sewage — into coastal ecosystems in what they say is the finest detail yet. And the numbers are intimidating.

Clivus Multrum are our favourite compost toilet system.

Rikard Lindström's original 1939 design has been updated a little, but the new designs still use the same natural aerobic process to break the waste down to 5% of its original volume. You can't improve on perfect.

Potoroo Palace is a large native animal sanctuary on the Sapphire Coast in NSW. They needed a disabled accessible amenity for visitors caught short and the far end of the park. They came to VIROtech.

We consulted closely with the Potoroo Palace team about model selection, siting, building configuration and installation and they decided to install a Clivus Multrum CM14 composting system in 2019. The installation was simple and the maintenance regime is a doddle.

GREYWATER - although our compost toilet systems are approved in all states & territories, our clients ocassionally encounter problems having their greywater system approved. There are no flushing toilets, so they DON'T need a septic tank and may only need a fairly simple, inexpensive greywater system.

With the help of over 30 years experience, VIROtech has developed guidelines for greywater systems that many local councils are now happy to approve. We're more than happy to work with you and your geo-tech to find a suitable solution.
