On day four of our 8-day Rhine Getaway river voyage, we wake up in Koblenz, a traditional German city, founded more than 2,000 years ago.
This former trading settlement rests on a massif of the Middle Rhine Highlands. Its cobblestone streets, wood-beamed houses adorned with flowers, ancient market square and medieval churches recall the fairy-tale Germany of old.
After a morning of exploring, head back to your Longship and set off sailing down the scenic middle Rhine. This section of the Rhine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will pass vineyard-blanketed hills whose steep slopes require vintners to pick grapes by hand, keeping a centuries-old tradition alive.
Splendid castles line the banks, all of which have stories to share, and the Lorelei Rock presides at a dramatic curve in the river. This infamous river maiden mesmerized sailors with her song and lured them to their demise at her feet.
Next you will dock in Rüdesheim, where you can explore the area’s center of winemaking.
The famed Drosselgasse, a cobblestone street lined with taverns that pour local vintages and spill music into alleyways, attracts locals and visitors alike. Half-timbered houses, narrow warrens and old inns lend the town a medieval flavour.
Castles once provided security for the region, including the 9th-century Brömserburg Castle, the oldest on the Rhine.

On day three of our 8-day Rhine Getaway voyage, we arrive in Cologne, Germany.
Cologne’s modern plazas and Hohe Strasse host welcoming shops, enticing restaurants and cologne boutiques.

Of note is the city’s 14th-century cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic artistry and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Having survived Allied bombs during World War II, the cathedral’s imposing twin spires are visible for miles and its stained glass windows fill the interior with brilliant coloured light. Its steps lead to a platform with astounding views.

You may like to take our popular Privileged Access tour that takes you to the roof of this astonishing cathedral and learn about ongoing excavation and restoration efforts.

Entering the very ceiling of the cathedral through a rooftop door, you will see the vast tower spaces and massive iron structures holding up the roof, and visit the restoration workshops. Then, venture onto the roof itself for incredible, up-close views of the cathedral’s Gothic architecture. Beyond, gaze out over the rooftops and waters of the Rhine far below.

Head back on board and enjoy dinner with newfound friends at The Restaurant.

Wake up in Kinderdijk, a village community in the Alblasserwaard province. It’s day two of our Rhine Getaway river voyage, and we’re ready to explore.

This corner of South Holland, part of the scenic Waal and Merwede regions, has long been shaped by Rhine Delta waters.

Kinderdijk is most known for its 19 remarkably preserved 18th-century windmills.
The charming hamlet is located amid low-lying polders, tracts of land reclaimed from the sea by the power of the windmills and enclosed by embankments, or dikes.

Step onshore with your guide, where you will learn why they were built and see firsthand how they work, even stepping into a working windmill to observe its mechanics and living quarters.

Families who live in these mills are required to keep them in working order. This excursion provides a revealing look at these marvellous buildings that helped shape the legendary Dutch landscape.

Welcome on board on your Viking Longship, your home away from home for the eight days as we take you on a virtual voyage of our popular Rhine Getaway itinerary.

We begin in Amsterdam, city of charming canals, elegant gabled houses, splendid museums and abundant bicycles. Settle into your stateroom, unpacking just once and join us for delicious lunch on the Aquavit Terrace.

This afternoon spend time exploring the Dutch capital, its patchwork of waterways forms about 90 islands connected by 1,500 bridges.

Discovering Amsterdam is a pleasure best pursued on foot with where a stroll along the city’s waterways showcases the beautiful architecture of these properties and their interesting features.

The houses are traditionally narrow but deep and tend to tilt forward. The lean serves two purposes: it provides additional living space in a house’s upper quarters; and, in conjunction with the hoist beam protruding from the peak of the roof, it allows heavy items to be lifted by pulley to top floors without breaking any windows.

Claiming both the world's most famous wine regions and some of the most‑loved grape varieties, it is no wonder France is an oenophile's heaven.

It is also one of the largest and most important wine producers in the world, producing over 3,000 different wines across two million hectares of vineyards.

France can be divided into 11 major wine regions that are scattered all over the country, each known for their distinctive and unique terroir, grape varietals and wines.

Travel writer, Cassie Wilcox, shares her experience sailing on our fascinating 8‑day Châteaux, Rivers & Wine river journey.

While the voyage is centered around learning about the wines and visiting the vineyards of Bordeaux, she soon discovers the region offers much more – a rich history, beautiful architecture and delicious regional fare.

Cádiz is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in Southern Europe.

Situated on a narrow promontory of land surrounded by water on three sides, it lies on Spain’s breathtaking province of Andalusia and gained incredible wealth during the 18th century.

Visit the Catedral Nueva, or New Cathedral, with its elaborate baroque exterior.

Its gold dome reflects the wealth that poured into this city from the New World after the river that led into nearby Seville silted up.

Çanakkale was an object of desire dating back to the ancient Greeks.

Today, the nearby ruins of Troy, once a powerhouse of Asia Minor, provide a glimpse of the region’s former glory.

The remarkably preserved structures of this UNESCO World Heritage Site offer hints of life here in the days of Alexander the Great and the later Roman Emperor Augustus.
