We're delighted to announce the arrival of our newest ship on the Nile River, the Viking Hathor.
This 82‑guest ship will soon set sail on our popular 12‑day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, offering our guests an unforgettable journey through Egypt.
"With its abundance of cultural treasures and ancient antiquities, Egypt has always been a destination of great interest to curious travellers, including our guests," said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. "We believe our ships are by far the most elegant vessels sailing the Nile River, and we look forward to introducing even more explorers to this fantastic destination in the years to come."
Have you sailed on one of our Nile River ships? Don't you think they are quite special?
“Gravlax” literally means “buried salmon,” referring to the ancient practice of curing raw fish by burying it in sand by the seashore to be saturated and cured by ocean tides.
And no smørbørd (open-faced sandwich) selection would be complete without this, one of Scandinavia’s most distinctive dishes.
These days, fish is salted and seasoned, weighed down and refrigerated until cured.
Have you ever visited the Melk Abbey?
Perched on dramatic cliffs high above the Danube, this ochre-coloured confection is perhaps the most graceful landmark of the Wachau Valley and a masterwork of baroque brilliance.
Rebuilt during the 18th century after the original 12th-century building was destroyed by fire, its library is now home to a wide range of medieval manuscripts.
The interior of the abbey’s church is a kaleidoscope of red, orange and gold, with a magnificent carved pulpit and colourful ceiling frescoes.
You will also see the imperial rooms, which are now home to a museum chronicling the abbey’s history from its inception to modern times.
Be sure to step onto its gracious terrace for breathtaking views of the Danube, the city and the expanding valley.

Have you ever explored Ephesus in Turkey?
One of the best-preserved cities of antiquity in the world, at its height Ephesus was home to more than 250,000 people, but only Roman citizens were allowed to live in the city center.
See the finely crafted 2nd-century Temple of Hadrian and the spectacular Great Theater, able to host 25,000 spectators.
Marvel at the most recognizable building in the city, the Library of Celsus, built to house 12,000 scrolls. Its colonnaded facade is an outstanding example of a typical Roman public building.
Journey to the edge of Selçuk, where the great Temple of Artemis once stood. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it resembled the famed Parthenon of Athens with its many marble columns.
Truly a marvel, Ephesus offers an unparalleled look into the lives of the ancients.

Soak up the restorative powers of Budapest’s thermal baths and join locals in a centuries-old tradition.
Ancient Romans discovered the benefits of bathing in the thermal waters that flow through Budapest. As the city grew, the spouting springs were treasured and preserved so highly that not even the Communist government forbade their pleasures.
During your visit, you might mingle with the locals taking a soak or observe some bathers as they pass the time with a game of chess in the pool.
So revered have these waters been that many have been sheltered within facilities that exude a temple-like aura.
Located in the heart of Germany’s Rheingau region, Rüdesheim is the area’s centre of winemaking and was made famous by the Romantics of the early 19th century.
The famed Drosselgasse, a cobblestone street lined with taverns that pour local vintages and spill music into alleyways, attracts locals and visitors alike. Half-timbered houses, narrow warrens and old inns lend the town a medieval flavour.
Castles once provided security for the region, including the 9th-century Brömserburg Castle, the oldest on the Rhine. The Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet museum also houses an impressive collection of self-playing instruments.
Have you tasted the wines of Rüdesheim?
Have you ever visited the Royal Palace of Caserta in Naples?
Built at the behest of Charles III, Duke of Bourbon, during the mid-18th century, the palace’s grand baroque and neoclassical stylings were designed to display the power and wealth of the Bourbon monarchy.
Its grandeur is immediately evident as you approach its impressive five-story façade, while once inside, marvel at the marbled Grand Staircase and enjoy a tour of the palace’s lavish salons and richly decorated reception rooms.
Stop to admire the stunning frescoes that adorn the walls and ceilings, and the many elegant tapestries, carpets, furniture and chandeliers placed throughout.
Head out back to the garden, where you will have free time to independently explore its broad lawns featuring vast avenues and terraces dotted with statues. See the stunning cascading waterfall, or stroll through the sublime beauty of the English Garden.

Flammkuchen, which literally translates from German as “flame cake,” became popular in the 1960s at the beginning of the pizza craze.
You will find variations of it in much of Europe. With both a thinner crust and topping layer than a typical pizza, it is perfectly served with a generous side salad for lunch or a light supper.

Have you ever journeyed to Malta?
The Island of Malta has been shaped by countless civilizations. But it was the Knights of St. John who built Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This baroque wonder is one of Europe’s first cities planned and constructed from scratch, cut from local honey-colored limestone.
The humble facades of its churches and palaces hide extravagant interiors of marble, tapestries and paintings.
A stroll around the massive walls and bastions affords a striking bird’s-eye view of the cityscape and the spectacular Grand Harbor.
When you are a guest on our Viking ships, we want you to feel at home, so we have designed them to ensure your time with us is as comfortable and memorable as possible.

Have you ever seen Angkor Wat?
Located in the Siam Reap province of Cambodia, Angkor Wat stands as one of the most remarkable architectural feats in human history.
Constructed in the early 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II, this sprawling temple complex originally served as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu before gradually transforming into a Buddhist site by the end of the 12th century.
Its grandeur, intricate design, and symbolic meaning make Angkor Wat a profound testament to the ingenuity of the Khmer Empire.

There is something so quaint about the German towns found along the banks of Europe's rivers.
“Awoken by the slowing of the ship's heartbeat, I stand on the veranda to take in our arrival at Singapore. It's very different to the childhood memory. Back then, we docked at a busy pier as dockworkers in conical hats unloaded the disembarking passengers and their luggage. Now, we tie up at a scrupulously clean and orderly passenger terminal.”
