The Performer's Heart Inspiring performers with 'heart' to leave their mark in the world. The Performing Arts are an essential part of who you are.

You know the arts is where you belong. They take you to another place, touching your heart and freeing your soul. Without them your world feels a little empty. You long to express yourself with freedom and have people appreciate your art. Sharing your dreams may fill you with excitement until a casual opinion or silence, from someone you respect plummets you into self-doubt. Even when people remar

k on your talent, it’s hard to believe them. You are probably really hard on yourself, constantly comparing yourself to others, which leaves you feeling inadequate. Instead of shining, you end up hiding! It doesn’t have to be that way…

You can contribute your unique gift to the world with confidence. Hi, my name is Shiona Long I appreciate that turning your back on your art, is like loosing part of yourself. Throughout my career as a teacher and coach, I have helped hundreds of performers to manage their self doubt and express themselves with incredible freedom! One of the most important things that we can teach our young performers is how to deal with feedback. Feedback is always a gift, at the same time it is given from the perspective of the giver - their opinion. It is up to us as the receiver to say thank you, then decide what we do with it! Take it on board, or let it go... Take your power back!

I love this! Great teachers teach commitment.

We spend way too much time teaching people technique. Teaching people to be good at flute, or C++ or soccer. It's a waste because the fact is, most people can learn to be good at something, if they only choose...

Great articles on practice strategies, particularly how you deal with mistakes!

We've all heard the phrase 'practice smarter, not harder,' but what does that really mean? What does 'smarter' practice actually look like? A study of collegiate piano majors suggests that the key lies in how we handle mistakes.

Reconnecting You To The Artist Within

If you are like many people that I have been talking of late there is a sense of the year slipping away without enough progress being made!

Performer's Tip - Remember as an artist you are a story teller. Whether you sing, dance, act or play an instrument. Tell us a story that draws us in, connects to our heart and leaves us knowing more of who we are.

Just beautiful!

Just beautiful!

Neither a lofty degree of intelligence, nor imagination, nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.

Performer's Tip: I have noticed an interesting trend of late - artists minimising their accomplishments. STOP. It is ok to proud of what you are achieving and notice them. After all if you don't stop and say thank you for what is going well, why would life give you something even better!
