Review

As a sufferer from coeliac disease together with a slight intolerance to some other foods and one significant food allergy I find that when I am travelling, finding somewhere nice to eat can be a significant chore. Even when I can be accommodated, choices are often severely limited and compromised. Given the effort, if I do find somewhere, I often have to return several nights in a row, sometimes eating the same meal.

Travel to Japan was potentially even more restrictive, given the language barrier and unfamiliar writing characters coupled with the almost ubiquitous use of wheat containing ingredients. It seemed as if it would be virtually impossible for me to experience the full range of Japanese cuisine.

Gluten Free Tours Japan totally remove this burden from the holiday and allowed me to enjoy each part of their extensive and detailed itinerary whilst fully experiencing all types of Japanese food in their gluten free forms including Ramen, Okonomiyaki, Sushi and Sashimi, Tempura, Yakitori, Onigiri and many more.

Breakfasts were included and gluten-free (and often very extensive) and all other meals were suggested, agreed by us and organised by Meaghan and Hiroshi. Great care was taken to ensure the food was safe including, where necessary, directly calling the restaurant staff before the meal commenced, inspecting the food presented (via Whatsapp photos) and having further discussions with staff on individual elements. Even snacks purchased in corner stores or souvenir shops were checked to ensure they were OK.

This level of support freed us from meal planning and safety concerns and allowed us to relax and enjoy the holiday. We ended up having a fantastic adventure and would not hesitate to use their services again."

Otoshi (お通し),

A Japanese appetizer that is served sometimes without you ordering it. You can look at it like a table charge. It will be served without you requesting it and you will be charged for it even if you don’t eat it. It’s customary in places like bars and Izakayas. It can be confusing when food turns up that you didn’t order and you might expect not to pay for it that it might be complimentary. In some cases you may be able to request before you sit down not to be served it but given this contributes to the financial operations of a business it’s best just to accept it graciously. Unfortunately it’s very rare that it would be gluten free. Edamame can be an Otoshi dish which is gluten free but we’d need to check the water used for boiling them was not contaminated by boiling wheat noodles.

I think we can all agree Celiac Disease hits hardest when it’s our children missing out. We work hard to make sure you feel like you are on a holiday from celiac disease and we work especially hard when our clients are children. Making sure that along with all the healthy food they get to explore the sweets and treats of Japan. 🍡🍧🍬🍫🍮🥞

Reading labels. We read all labels of food and snacks for our clients. If you are traveling to Japan without our support you need to be very careful with translation apps. They get it wrong. This label was translated using an app and it completely left off the wheat it contains. At times our clients use these apps but still send it to us to double check and we find ingredients that were not listed in the translation that are not safe. Travel with our support stress free or we recommend running the labels through a few translation apps to cross check. The red circle is kanji for wheat.

It’s an incredible season at the ski fields. So much fresh powder. Yes, we can make sure you stay nourished and warm with delicious food across Japans ski fields. Make sure you mark a ski trip on your calendar and get in early so you don’t miss out. Japan is known for its terrific mountains and reasonable pricing compared to many world ski resorts. ⛷️
These lovely folk are on their 3rd ski adventure with us. We love tagging along with them (from a distance). Thanks for all the laughs 😍
