GUMBI GUMBI – MEDICINE TREE

The Gumbi Gumbi may sometimes go unnoticed on the sandy flats and desert country of Western Qld, but this old bush medicine tree certainly deserves your attention.

Amongst the Aboriginal peoples of Australia, this tree has a wide variety of medicinal uses, with an infusion of the seeds, fruit pulp or leaves drunk for the relief of pains, cramps and colds. The leaves are also applied as a wash for the treatment of skin complaints or warmed to use as a compress to induce lactation in new mothers.

Gumbi Gumbi can refer to several varieties of the Pittosporum genus, but it is Pittosporum angustifolium that is the main medicine tree. Further information is provided in books and publications, including 'Kar-kar: Mitakoodi Traditional Medicinal Plant Uses of the Cloncurry Region', 2013.

Some commercial nurseries stock these drought tolerant plants, so if you’re interested to grow one at your place, take a look online. It could be the start of your own waterwise bush tucker garden!
