Some highlights of our Autumn Tones and Taste Tour to the very scenic Adelaide Hills…
Lobethal Road Winery, our fab Bus driver Bob and our final tasting stop the little gem of a vineyard, so tiny, Ten Miles East, so rustic and so different, we paired the wine tasting with little chopped up pieces of goodness to see how it changed the taste of the wine & what a discovery of tastes it was..
Fine wines with incredible artist designed labels too…
On our way back to Adelaide we stopped in at Penfolds to compare how the big guns do it, very commercial, very flash, so many tourist buses and $50 for a 30ml taste of 2019 Grange.

Michelin * Do you know how it all started?

Hailing from Clermont-Ferrand, a small French town, west of Lyon, where brothers André and Édouard Michelin had a challenge. They had a tyre company, but in 1889, there were only several thousand cars in France. Alas, how could they inspire the French to purchase cars and eventual tyres? The Michelins were determined to turn vehicles from a novelty that took drivers to a Sunday picnic to a viable mode of transportation over long distances,” writes Richard Feloni in Business Insider.

Perhaps a bit of travel inspiration would get people into the driver’s seat. Much like bloggers do today, the brothers decided to create the Michelin Guide with recommendations. These books included hotel and restaurant recommendations, information on how to change a tyre and road maps. And more than a century later, this tyre company’s guide has become a sort of litmus test for fine dining. The first Michelin guide was published in 1900, and over the years, these originally free guides continued to grow and evolve.

In 1926, the first Michelin stars were given with just one star total being possible; several years later, they increased it to three total stars. One star means “a very good restaurant in category,” two stars means “excellent cooking, worth a detour,” three stars mean “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey".

Michelin’s criteria considered are: food quality, cooking techniques, chef’s personality displayed in the menu, consistency and flavour harmony.

It’s not only about stars. They also have the Bib Gourmand symbol, which is awarded to restaurants who have good quality food at affordable prices. Other symbols in the guide may mention the restaurant’s stunning views, its impressive wine list or its outdoor dining.

Prosecco....🥂
The first thing to understand about prosecco is the grape variety. All Italian prosecco is made with a grape called Glera.
If it's called 'prosecco' and made in Australia, it could have anything in it. Most of it, is just sparkling white wine. It's one of the reasons the Europeans want Australian producers to stop using the name as part of the free trade agreement currently being negotiated.

The second thing to decipher is the various denominations based on the location of the vineyards within the Prosecco-growing region of Veneto. At the bottom of the quality pyramid is Prosecco DOC, which covers the wider area. As the vineyards stretch up the hills towards the villages of Congliano and Valdobbiadene, they are designated DOCG, and the quality and the price of prosecco increases.

Our buying tip is to pick the prosecco for the purpose. Choose a prosecco that suits the occasion, the people you'll be serving it to and what you'll be serving it with and your budget. 🍾
