Join us to feel like Lawrence of Arabia on expedition, or The Queen of Sheba who made her grand and showy entrance into Jerusalem riding her camel, followed by a great caravan of camels, carrying a huge amount of exotic spices, gold, and precious gems for King Solomon. Today, camels still are a sign of wealth in Arab countries and historically were integral in maintaining and developing trade rout

es. The camel is highly regarded in many countries as an integral part of life and culture. It is referred to as a 'Gift of God' and symbolises travel, journeys, wellness, wisdom, endurance, survival, service, self-sufficiency, conservation, and stamina. The modern-day cameleers of Camel Treks Australia adore their camels and invite you to continue by exploring our website. 🐪 The Fascinating Flehmen Response: What’s That Funny Camel Face? 🐪

Ever seen a camel curl its upper lip, squint, and expose its teeth as if it’s pulling the ultimate funny face? That’s the Flehmen Response in action, and it’s not just for laughs—it’s science! 🧪👃

Here’s what’s happening:
👉 Camels (both males and females!) use their vomeronasal organ (aka Jacobson’s organ) to detect pheromones, giving them an ultra high-definition sense of smell.
👉 By sniffing and “tasting” the air, or even urine (yes, you read that right 😅), camels gather vital info, like the reproductive status of other camels or details about their environment.

When do they do this?
🦋 Males commonly perform this behavior during breeding season to determine if a female is receptive.
💡 Females, however, may also engage in the Flehmen Response to explore new scents, proving it’s not just for the boys!

It’s a spectacle of nature that reminds us how truly remarkable camels are—intelligent, resourceful, and endlessly fascinating. 🤍✨

📸 .com.au proving that science can be both weird and wonderful!

Taking Over Ravi’s Shop! 🎨

Ravi and I go way back—he first dressed the camels and myself when I was just 23 for a South Australian Tourism Commission event. That’s nearly three decades ago! 🐪✨

The stunning blankets you see adorning our camels are all handcrafted by talented women, collaborating to create cotton Gudri throws. These beautiful pieces are mostly block-printed and hand-stitched, with each one boasting its own unique pattern. 🧵🌟

If you’re in Adelaide, be sure to drop into Ravi’s shop for some vibrant Christmas gifts 🎁 or explore the collection online. His work is a true celebration of colour, craft, and culture!

🙏 Thank you again, Ravi, for your amazing creations and continued collaboration over all these years!

Head Cameleer Edward must have been feeling generous sharing his lunch with Raji.

A hot tip for impending guests. The camels can identify with being humans when it suits, and the humans can morph into camels!

If you eat too close to the camels they are no longer saltbush eaters, but connoisseurs of fine wraps, fruits and muesli bars.

If you fancy sharing food with them we don’t recommend what Edward’s doing - he knows the gentle lipped camels as compared to the excited grabbers.

However, we welcome guests to arrive with a bag of carrots or apples which you can offer at the end of each trekking day. It’s nice to connect like this, and you’ll see it’s truly appreciated!

Once again if you’ve emailed with preferred trekking data we inch closer to the new system’s completion and will be in contact soon. Thank you for your continued interest in trekking and following along.

Next year, 2025, will mark the 30th anniversary of exponential growth and learning alongside camels.

I owe much to the shoulders of those who took the time to teach me. Blessed to learn from kind hands, interested in the camels characters within, and, from behind those incredible eyes.

Soon I’ll be reaching out to everyone who has emailed their preferred trekking dates. Thank you for your patience and interest.

The last few old camel-men who shared their knowledge with me all said that technology and the need for websites, booking systems, admin etc. would have prevented them from moving forward commercially if it were not for old age.

Their interest level to embrace such matters was zero, yet the flicker of a campfire enlivened their minds, and the endless vistas evoked stories I clung to that often afforded me pearls of wisdom.

A simplicity develops living as we do, and it’s tiring moving from campfire to computer. However I am very close to launching an almost entirely new website that will better handle bookings and queries.

So please sit tight and know that if you’ve emailed, you will get first pick for booking prior to any dates being released online. I will personally be in touch soon.

And if you’re following along for content we’ve got plenty incoming planned.

The mysterious and beautiful Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre North. Cameras struggle to capture this incredible expanse.

What looks like a setting sun is actually the rising full moon, with the setting sun parallel, and reflecting against its surface.

It was a magnificent sight to behold from the white salt encrusted surface of the seemingly endless Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre North.

Journeys with us encompass the lower sections of the Tirari Desert observing desert clay pans, gibber and flood plains and Clayton wetlands.

Diversity is a given!

Check out our updated website for more information and if you’ve emailed we’ll get to you soon.

“Captured Moments by Jill Meyers 📸🌌

A huge thank you to Jill for sharing these incredible images from her time with us. Her capture of the Milky Way is particularly breathtaking, highlighting the unmatched clarity of the desert night sky.

The Outback truly offers one of the best places in the world to stargaze, free from light, noise, and air pollution. The ever-changing landscapes and crystal-clear night skies remind us of the magic that exists far from the bustle of modern life.

Thank you for preserving these moments, Jill! 🌌🐪

Attending the Thousand Camel Festival and riding in the opening ceremony is truly an unforgettable experience—and one of the many exclusive opportunities that come travelling with me!
I’ve cherished every moment of receiving firsthand insights while observing Mongol nomads at work and at home. It’s like stepping onto a movie set: their traditional attire, the deep, resonant sounds of their language, and the intricate customs for entering a Ger, their cozy yurt-style homes.
I could share endless stories, but here’s what you need to know: there are still spots available for our upcoming Mongolia Journey! 🇲🇳 Each journey is a unique and life-expanding experience.
For all the details, visit cameltreksaustralia.com or check the link in my bio.
Join me for an experience of a lifetime!

Behind the scenes, it’s full-on right now, with Karen either at the computer or out with the camels. First, a huge thank you to Shane & Debbie at Clayton Station for allowing us to traverse their section of the Tirari Desert and Clayton Wetlands and for taking great care of our camels.
This pic, Karen is wearing her ONUS sunnies, which she loves for their excellent face protection. The sunglasses feature a detachable nose band with a magnetic connection to the main frame—her kids and guests now call her cat woman!
For those waiting on 2025 trekking dates, they’re in the works and will be bookable very soon. Karen is also transitioning to a new online booking system to make things smoother for future guests, although the setup is taking some time.
Mongolia is confirmed and still has a few spots available, while our India trek is now fully booked! We can’t wait to share photos and footage from these incredible journeys in January and February.
If you’re waiting on an email response, please know that you’re in our system, and we appreciate your patience. Managing a unique operation like ours has its challenges, and past experiences with non-camel-trained staff have led to complications and increased costs—something we strive to avoid to ensure the best experience for our guests.
We hope everyone is doing well and will share more updates soon. The website is current & expanding, so for more immediate information please visit cameltreksaustralia.com.au 🐪

‘The Power of Connection and Energy - Love to Tove’
Working with camels for so long, with a deep intention to connect, has been a priceless journey that continues to evolve. One thing I’ve learned is that true communication is largely non-verbal. We all know the feeling—when we ask someone ‘how are you?’ and they say ‘I’m fine,’ but we can sense that it’s far from the truth.
Working with camels has taught me about the power of energetic exchange. I believe that when we shift from a purely physical approach to a more subtle, energetic way of being, profound and positive change can happen. Just as radio frequencies transmit energy, so can we.
Today, I’m sending all my love and strength to our dear friend Tove, pictured here with Queen Bindu, as today she receives complex heart surgery. If you’re reading this, please join me in sending her your love and positive energy ❤️
Thank you 🙏

This is a good vibration post!
My wish for everyone is that they could be as fortunate as us, and have a ‘Tove’ in their life.
Director of Camel Treks Australia, Karen is pictured with Tove in the Tirari Desert dunes earlier this year in winter.
The next images are Tove with her beloved camels. This wasn’t her first encounter trekking. Tove is especially connected with our Queen Bindu 🐪.
The final image includes Leanne who has done countless treks in Australia and overseas with us in both Mongolia & India. She is pictured beside Karen and Tove and by chance this was their second extended trek together.
Tove is vibrant, energetic, optimistic, intelligent, compassionate, caring, and one of the greatest lovers of life and people we have ever met.
We are excited for tomorrow as Tove receives life giving surgery and we’re sending her loving vibrations all day. You can join us and send her some of your love too.
Leave a comment and we’ll share it with her!

The two K’s and Zay.
Karen and Kathy both started their love of camels and learning about camels with Lionel Keegan. That’s many moons ago for both of them who have since owned and operated their camel focused businesses.
They share a love of being intimately connected with their camels and a rarer sense of the importance of the camels lives and their happiness. This is what creates a truly safe work environment and an animal that is a pleasure to be around for everyone.
Neither use nose pegs or chain halters.
We are often are told that it’s impossible without nose pegs. This is of course utter ignorance. When you know better … you know better!
Both have also been zoo keepers working alongside rhino, cheetah, giraffes and the big cats.
Thanks Kathy & Zay for visiting Camel Treks Australia’s crew and camels, we’ll see you both in November.

Camel Treks Australia first ventured into Mongolia with a group of enthusiastic Australian cameleers in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and we are excited to return once again in early 2025.

Karen and Edward are looking forward to capturing the essence of the Thousand Camel Festival and embarking on a journey alongside the nomads.

Queen lead camel Dinny (aka Dinnalicious) wasn’t quite sure Cameleer Karen had chosen the right path forward.
A discussion unfolded between Karen and Dinny, and they both agreed—the dune was indeed too steep to descend. The camel caravan wisely chose to continue along the ridge, seeking a gentler slope to navigate down into the interdune.
Negotiations like these are common, as both camels and humans instinctively avoid potential pitfalls. With a shared sense of self-preservation, everyone works together to find the safest route.
Chef Nicola also features in these photos, she joined the camels as often as possible.
As our trekking season comes to a close, we’re already missing the rhythm of walking and wandering with these intelligent companions. The cleanup will take weeks, and planning for the 2025 calendar is underway.
Stay tuned for more updates!
