Join us to feel like Lawrence of Arabia on expedition, or The Queen of Sheba who made her grand and showy entrance into Jerusalem riding her camel, followed by a great caravan of camels, carrying a huge amount of exotic spices, gold, and precious gems for King Solomon. Today, camels still are a sign of wealth in Arab countries and historically were integral in maintaining and developing trade rout

es. The camel is highly regarded in many countries as an integral part of life and culture. It is referred to as a 'Gift of God' and symbolises travel, journeys, wellness, wisdom, endurance, survival, service, self-sufficiency, conservation, and stamina. The modern-day cameleers of Camel Treks Australia adore their camels and invite you to continue by exploring our website. Positive shout out to Veterinarian Carmen who joined us for some big trekking weeks.

Camel Treks Australia’s good friend Indar from India’s Thar Desert met our young Australian Desert bred camels.

Indar and his son Vikram came to visit friends in the big smoke of Melbourne, and surprised us with a visit to see where and how we live with camels.

It was lovely to share our region with longterm India camel friends.

Thank you for visiting Indar and Vikram. We hope you enjoyed Melbourne, South Australia’s Peninsulas, Mid North, Flinders Ranges & Outback.

Look out New Zealand they’re heading your way!

Camel Treks Australia’s Director Karen pictured with Cartographer Anthony Stephens at his business 110 Hindley St, Adelaide City in South Australia.

This is The Map Shop, which used to produce Adelaide's street directories and has made and sold paper maps for more than 50 years.

Anthony’s range of planning maps is an extension of his Custom Mapping Service, which over the year Camel Treks Australia has relied on for successful trekking operations.

There are many commercial maps available that cover a variety of locations where we trek and travel, but when we want something that isn't produced this way, then a custom made map is needed.

Anthony has graciously allowed Karen access to what is the largest privately owned map database in South Australia, and created specific location maps for treks.

Visits to The Map Shop are highly recommended where you’ll find not only Australian maps, but maps for every corner of the globe!

Enthusiastic Naturalist Kale is always chasing after the next reptile find, and it’s great to be around an 18 year old who doesn’t miss a phone signal and wouldn’t give up his love of remote wandering for anything.
Kale was a positive influence on the most recent school camp as he shared his off grid passions with students.
Kale is seen in these images riding atop Queen Millie after twanging his knee in hot pursuit of what might have been a young painted dragon.
It wasn’t long before he recovered to wander the dunes.
On treks we carry a multitude of remote communications devices and can quickly arrange for vehicle pick ups if someone is beyond a camel ride.
Out here it becomes evident whether a person drinks enough water to remain hydrated sufficiently.

This is certainly the biggest challenge on school camps and we announce frequent hydration breaks and carry delicious re-hydration products.

Heat stroke even in mild weather is absolutely possible. It’s rare in adults as they’ve learnt to listen to signs such as dry lips & throat.

Even in the big smoke (cities) staying hydrated is what keeps our brains and bodies ticking along nicely.

Here’s to young nature enthusiasts and drinking a good drop 💧 🐪

After sunset scenes from the recently completed school camp within the dunes of the Tirari Desert.
Australia is home to ten deserts: the Great Victoria Desert, Great Sandy Desert, Tanami Desert, Simpson Desert, Gibson Desert, Little Sandy Desert, Strzelecki Desert, Sturt Stony Desert, Tirari Desert, and Pedirka Desert. Despite their vast expanse, only 3% of the Australian population resides in these arid regions.
The Tirari Desert, located in the eastern part of the Far North region of South Australia, spans an area of 15,250 square kilometres (5,888 square miles).
There are only several access points and we are grateful to Clayton Station for entrusting us as we wander and share this incredible landscape with student and guest groups.

Images from the camp show damper breads baking in the camp ovens and some fantastic breads were created during the camp including a massive chocolate birthday cake with chocolate buttercream frosting on top!

Nightly campfires, and the communal food creation tent.

Life lessons learnt on these camps continue to enlighten for years to come and we soon welcome two students from the previous year who will assist on camp as Junior Cameleers during their school holidays.

Long live real adventures for youth and the young at heart.

Crew member Nicola worked overtime sharing her knowledge of food preparations and meal creating with students on our recently completed camp.
How lucky students were eating huge hot breakfasts every morning.
Lunch and evening meals were delicious and nutritious.
And under the guidance of a skilled communicator who just happened to be Chef Nicola👩‍🍳.
Nicola is pictured with a student who led camels for two days!
This group were all great food creators and equally excellent eaters. Well done Chef Nicola, students and everyone involved!

Dog Mum Sallee assured us her poodle ‘Scooter’ 🐩 would be a legend, and that he is!

Cartographer Anthony Stephens predicted years ago that maps will still be crucial, even with GPS and other emerging technologies.

Anthony, and his Adelaide City Map Shop, now located on Hindley Street, are integral behind-the-scenes components of Camel Treks Australia.

Our little team dreads his eventual retirement, as do many others. Anthony makes our maps specifically for our ventures. He has taught us to read maps and triangulate our positioning, relieving our modern dependency on GPS equipment, which by the way he sold us and sells too!

Anthony is a cartographer par excellence, who has made and sold paper maps for well over 50 years. The store opened in 1963 and Anthony bought the business in 1992 when it was on Peel Street. In 2018 he moved to Hindley Street.

If you find yourself wandering the streets of Adelaide City, make a visit to The Map Shop.

One of the shop's most popular items is a 100-year-old map of Adelaide, which features things like the Sir Ross Smith landing area. Karen bought this one as part of her father's birthday present a few years ago; it's a visual masterpiece and makes for art that creates conversation.

Anthony shared that all those older maps were done under 'plane tabling', which involved a man going on top of a hill, triangulating the major features, then going to another hill and checking the coordinates, and then sketching between them. Thanks to Anthony, our team understands triangulating and map creation, and it's been a privilege to learn from the master himself. Thank you, Anthony, for your years of map creating, and we hope you express posted our last order!

Afghan cameleers were brought to Australia in the 1860s to manage a mode of transport suited to harsh desert terrain. Camel trains transported wool and stores from Spencer Gulf to the mining area around Mount Remarkable and to pastoral properties. They also supplied materials to the Overland Telegraph Line. More detailed information - S.A History Hub.
Today, our Camel Farm base is located within 10 kilometers of the Port of arrival at Port Augusta. In October and November 2023, we pioneered coastal camel safaris from Port Paterson. Thanks to their success, we are now planning to offer more opportunities for the general public, tourist groups, and schools to experience short, half-day, overnight, and extended coastal safaris.

Featured in these images is Camel Treks Australia’s fleet of vehicles, including the chuck wagon and trailer. While our camel truck and multiple other trailers are missing from this image, they are essential workhorses for our operations.

Since January, our large off-road OKA, pictured next to the Land Cruisers, has been undergoing maintenance with an updated engine, clutch, and other major equipment. Although we had expected this work to be completed by now, despite everyone's best efforts, it remains in the workshop bay. However, we are nearing completion.

The first group of guests were absolute warriors, seated in our side-facing Land Cruisers. We sincerely appreciated their understanding during this time.

We are now reaching out to our next group to inform them that they will be cozy and embarking on an adventure with Ed tomorrow, heading north.

Embrace the adventure!

Camel Treks Australia has relied on Thuraya Satellite phone technology for many years.

However, today it was disheartening to learn that the satellite in space servicing the Thuraya/Pivotel services we used has been deemed beyond repair and dysfunctional. As a result, we, like many others, are transitioning entirely to Iridium Satellite phone technology.

Our thoughts go out to this provider and everyone affected. Satellite phones are integral components of our daily trekking kit, essential for crucial communications when needed.

There are a lot of behind-the-scenes devices and equipment that keeps Camel Treks Australia moving forward annually. We are grateful to many providers, especially the 'Electric Bug' team at 199/203 Torrens Road, Ridleyton South Australia for providing all of our communications needs.

Moving forwards with Iridium and the team at Electric Bug 🐛 📻

Queen Rasheeda was carrying some very important cargo on the first trek of the season. Our newly acquired St John First Aid AED Defibrillator Unit.

This unit was purchased with assistance from our partner in projects Alex Brown, and South Australian Tourism Commission, Experience Nature Tourism Fund team and Camel Treks Australia as part of a South Australia Government supported initiative.

Whilst 👑 Rasheeda will perhaps never appreciate how important units like this are in remote areas, she did a fabulous job allowing us to appoint her as the chariot for carrying the AED Defibrillator Unit.

We look forward to sharing more posts on remote communications systems in coming weeks.

Controversy and Drama!

Isn’t that what boosts the ratings score?

Well, that’s not our intention. However, we’ve decided to share this potentially contentious post publicly due to the frequent influx of inquiries and assertions regarding “The Australian Streamlined Camel Breed.”

Hopefully, we can address it promptly!

Firstly, camels are meant to have humps, and ideally, their rib cages shouldn't be visible. They shouldn't require deworming every five minutes just because you've chosen to live or operate a business in an area with a high parasite count.

There are habitats entirely unsuitable for camels to thrive, with the tropics being one prime example. Camels are desert animals, and relocating them from their natural environment inevitably leads to ongoing health issues.

Let’s not pretend there’s an Australian streamlined camel breed to mask the reality that these camels aren't thriving.

We won’t ignore the fact that individuals seeking streamlined camels claim to have been informed by a veterinarian about this breed, purportedly for ideal breeding outcomes!

What a disservice and dishonour to the pioneering camel men. Their camels were robust, and if you're unfamiliar with the history we encourage you to look up Australia’s Muslim Cameleers by Philip Jones and Anna Kenny which sheds light on these often-forgotten Muslim cameleers, known as 'Afghans', who played a crucial role in Australia's inland routes between the 1860s and 1930s. It highlights how camels, guided by expert 'drivers', became indispensable for transportation across the harsh conditions of inland Australia. Despite their significant contribution, they have been largely forgotten by history.

These pioneering camels were anything but streamlined, and our existing camel population today is far from streamlined.

To conclude, we cannot sell anyone the Streamlined Camel Breed as is does not exist and is instead a condition of poor camel health outcomes.

Camel lovers Brian and Karen, reunited and never ever apart in the heart.

Brian arrived in 2017 and will be remembered by many guests as the very handsome Frenchman working alongside lead camel Dinny.

Camels like Elephants remember and recall people in a similar manner as we do. It was a delight to see Dinny and Brian wandering again together and to see Dinny processing and realise that he was here!

Return again kiddo, otherwise Dinny and Karen are hitting the tracks to bring you home. We need a firm commitment for an annual cameo!

Big love ❤️
