Wrapping (which is also called swaddling) is a technique that can help you put your newborn baby to sleep safely.

But as soon as they start to roll, you'll need to transition to something else like a sleep sack.

Here are the top tips that I always share with my clients.

If you're finding it challenging to get the sleep you need in these early parenting days, make sure you still prioritise resting your mind and body somehow.

Developed by Nine Types Co. here are some ways that parents can still get a break. (Or if you're a parent supporter - ways you can give a break!).

🤍 Time away
🤍 Permission to not be helpful
🤍 Something “unproductive”
🤍 Appreciating art and nature
🤍 Alone time to recharge
🤍 A break from responsibility
🤍 Stillness to decompress
🤍 Safe space
🤍 Alone time at home

It's World Breastfeeding Week so I'm going to take this moment to remind you - In Australia you are allowed to breastfeed ANYWHERE, and it's against the law to discriminate against someone who is breastfeeding. A hungry baby should not have to wait.

🍊Orange you glad I told you?

🥕 Carotenemia occurs when a baby (or adult) ingests high levels of carotene, which is prevalent in purees made of sweet potato, carrot, pumpkin - usually the ones baby loves best!

🔶 While Carotenemia in itself is harmless, it might be a sign to branch out into some more variety in flavours and ingredients.

🟡BUT Always see a Doctor asap if you are worried or if your baby has any other symptoms so they can rule out jaundice.

Breaking SIDS research news!

A potential biomarker linked to the cause of SIDS has been identified.

A recent study found a blood test which checks the levels of the biomarker BChEsa could identify infants most at risk of SIDS.

If so, screening of this biomarker at birth could then potentially identify those babies most at risk. Knowing the babies who are most vulnerable can then help set up interventions to reduce (and hopefully prevent) them suffering SIDS. What a breakthrough!

Worried about drinking coffee and breastfeeding?

☕️ According to the national library of medicine (https://www.nlm.nih.gov/), caffeine will appear in breastmilk quite quickly after consumption.

☕️ HOWEVER studies have found an intake of 300-500mg (approx 5-8 shots of espresso) to be a safe level to consume with little to no effects passed onto the infant/child.

☕️But if in doubt or if you want another coffee and don't want it impact on your baby you can try the following suggestions:

1 - Don't drink coffee after noon.
2 - Breastfeed first, then have the coffee immediately after.
3. Don’t drink more than 5 cups of coffee a day. Most studies have only shown jitters, poor sleep patterns and fussiness when more than 500mg of coffee was consumed.

Why are some babies such noisy sleepers? 👉

😴 Babies aged 0-3 months have an immature sleep pattern.

As adults we have three clear sleep stages:
☁️ Light sleep (N1-N2)
☁️ Deep sleep (N3)
☁️ Dream sleep (REM)

👶Babies ONLY HAVE active (REM) and or quiet sleep (deep) and a fair bit of indeterminate sleep which is neither active nor quiet.

👶 So it is VERY NORMAL for small babies to be restless, noisy grunty sleepers, sometimes almost like they’re in pain. Some babies can even be said to have a condition called grunty baby syndrome.

Did your baby’s sleep noises surprise you?

Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend (Sunday, April 3rd) and with that, all the clocks will go back 1 hr.

For adults with no children that can seem no big deal… in fact, it’s a bonus sleep in! Woohoo.

However for all those parents out there it can ruin a child’s (and subsequently a parents) sleep.

Of course, some parents will get lucky. For example, daylight savings ending is great for parents of children pushing the bedtime boundaries and going to bed late (e.g. 8 pm) as soon that will become 7pm! Adults get the last laugh on this one 😂

But for those early risers (summer tends to breed plenty of these children), clocks going back is tough as that 6am wake up to start the day will soon become a 5am wake up to start the day (gulp!!) 😳

Here are my top 3 tips to help make the end of daylight savings a smooth transition that helps children adjust to the time change.
