SoloMade - TailorMade small group adventures for solo travellers
- Strictly a couple-free zone
- Your own room Hi! I’m Alyssa. I love solo travel.

It offers you the freedom to explore the world your way. As a lifelong traveller myself, I’ve covered 48 countries so far. I began solo travelling in my early 20s. Solo travel back then meant jumping on a tour or staying in hostels as a way to meet new people. But as we hit our 30s, 40s and beyond, our travel style evolves. As life and work get busy, holidays become even more important. When you n

o longer wanted to stay in hostels to meet people, but staying in a hotel alone can feel isolating. It’s nice to have people to dine with, to go to the local wine-bar with, or explore those off-the-beaten-track places. Group tours may still be a good option but being solo among a sea of couples can be a daunting experience. And then there are the pesky (and costly) ‘single supplements’. Unless you want to share with a stranger (no thanks!). I understand the challenges faced by solo travellers. And so, SoloMade was born. A solo travel community where like-minded explorers can come together. A place where you can share your travel dreams and experiences. An opportunity to join our exclusive hosted journeys, or connect with a solo travel expert to help plan the perfect independent itinerary. With over 23 years of travel industry experience, as well as years of lived travel experiences, you can rest assured you’re in safe hands. Welcome to my Solo Travel Community. Ravla Khemphur: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 🎥

Home for our next two nights is the hotel made famous in the Judy Dench classic film - The best exotic Marigold Hotel.

However, unlike in the movie, this hotel is not in Jaipur, but rather a quaint rural village between Jodphur and Udaipur. A village of around just 1200 people. The hotel is just how you imagine, with the rooms kept just like in the movie.

The Ravla Khempur has a passionate history of true Mewari valour that dates back to 1628 AD. The village was gifted to Shri Khemraj Dadhivadia to honour his gallant act of saving the young prince Jagat Singh of Mewar from the assassins by Mewar’s grateful Maharana.

Ravla Khempur exudes historical ambience and is graced with breathtaking surroundings. The lofty terraces, open courtyards, sprawling gardens, domes, arches and canopied balconies transport one back in time. Khempur village developed over the centuries to one side of the Ravla. It comprises a small, random and attractive cluster of typical rural dwellings and shops, and shaded squares where the villagers discuss the affairs of the world or share the local gossip. For the visitor, this is a side of India that has its own fascination; the cheerful welcome and natural hospitality of the village folk who ask nothing more than to enjoy a chat over a cup of tea. Beyond the village is an expanse of verdant farmland stretching off towards distant mountains.

Ravla Khempur is a haven for the horse lover. The stables house high pedigree Marwari and Kathiawari horses.

We’re here for a very special date in the Indian calendar - Holi Festival 🎉

Exotic India 2024: Day 9 - afternoon

This afternnon we took off on our 4 x 4 Rural Jeep Safari.

Imagine a “Desert Experience” that showcases rural Rajasthan in its full glory. This rich cultural experience took us into the actual homes of members of different communities like the Bishnois, Rajputs, Brahmins, and Raikas, and a chance to interact with them first hand.

We witnessed artisans and craftsmen such as the potters and weavers and were able to buy their local wares direct from the craftsmen and support their small communities.

We also had a unique opportunity to attend an o***m ceremony 😳 O***m in small quantities is permitted in this region, we watched a small ceremony and had many laughs as we were dressed and married off to each other

We saw plenty of wildlife along the way as well.

Exotic India 2024: Day 9 - morning

This morning we set off to visit Mehrangarh Fort,
Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum.

Mehrangarh, as Rajasthan’s largest fort, forms a looming presence over Jodhpur. Visible from miles around, it is a grand statement of Rajput valor. Its construction was started around 1459 by the king known as the founder of Jodhpur, Rao Jodha and is believed to have been completed by Raja Jeswant Singh in the second half of the 17th century. There are several palaces inside the fort. The fort offers magnificent panoramic view of the city.

🎥 Fun fact: if it looks familiar thats because part of Batman The Dark Knight was filmed at Mehrangarh.

Jaswant Thada is situated on the left side of Fort Mehrangarh, in fact between the fort and the city. Well maintained gardens welcome you inside the compound, and provide a great base to sit back and reflect on what you’ve seen and experienced. This cenotaph was built by Sardar Singhji in memory of his father.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the last palaces built in India. It was built in 1944 by Maharaja Umaid Singh. The king was attracted very much to the western style of living. The palace reflects his taste, as it is one of the rare palaces in India whose architecture is distinctly western. With 347 rooms, it was at the time the largest private residence in the world. Gaj Singh, the present owner, has divided the Palace into three functional parts. The first is a luxury heritage hotel run by the Taj group since 1977. The second forms the residence of the erstwhile royal family, and the third is an area open to public that houses among others a small museum. The museum's collection includes royal finery, local art and craft, miniature paintings, stuffed big cats, and a large number of clocks.

Then it was back to our beautiful hotel for lunch and a swim before this afternoons activities. Despite only being spring, we’re already hitting temps in the high 30’s 🥵

Exotic India 2024: Day Eight

Another travel day as we made our way from the pink city to the blue city of Jodhpur.

We made a lovely lunch stop along the way at Fort Bali, home of the local royal family of a small village of around 5000 people. We got the meet the family and tour the palace which has now been converted to a small boutique hotel. The suites are the original rooms of royals gone by. It’s beautiful and it was lovely to have a true home cooked meal with them.

Arriving at Jodphur we checked into our next regal hotel, Ajit Bhawan, where we felt like true princesses staying in a very regal formal palace. The rooms were divine, it smelt like a day spa and had the most luxurious linen you’ve ever slept in.

Exotic India 2024: Day Seven

Jaipur - the pink city!

It was a big today as we explored this beautiful city. Starting from the stunning Hawa Mahal, a unique palace filled with lots of little windows, it was designed as a viewing gallery for women of the royal family. We then continued on foot through the streets before arriving at the Observatory.

The fascinating observatory was built in the 18th century to measure time, predict eclipses, horoscopes and to track stars and planets.

Then it was off for more shopping, visiting local artisans and wandering the street bazaars - so much fun.

After a little swim and rest we headed up to Amer fort by jeeps. Amer Fort is beautiful, going at dusk allows you to see the colours change and the special coloured lighting they use at night. This was also the location for our signature dining experience at the regal AD1135 that is located within the fort.

Exotic India 2024: Day Six

Today we drive from Agra to the famous pink city of Jaipur. Named the pink city for the terracotta colour of the buildings.

We checked into one of my favourite boutique heritage hotels, the Alsisar Haveli. Once a royal palace, now converted to a hotel. It has the most stunning architecture, regal rooms and glorious outdoor spaces and pool.

This evening we enjoyed a night of Saris, cooking classes and a traditional puppet show. Throw in a few cheeky g&t’s and it was a very fun night

Exotic India 2024: Day Five - afternoon

Following breakfast and a little rest at the hotel we headed back out to explore Agra Fort

The fort is one of the most important and robustly built strongholds of the Mughals, embellished with number of richly decorated buildings encompassing the imposing Mughal style of art and architecture.

The fort contains a maze of buildings forming a small city within a city. The Agra Fort offers great views of the Taj Mahal from across the Yamuna.

Then we visited the local artisans that create marble inlay - the fine craft used to create the Taj Mahal.

In the evening, we attended the special show ‘Mohabbat the Taj’.

The show is a saga of love based on story behind the making of Taj Mahal. The eternal love story of Emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who gave us first wonder in the world in the form of ‘Taj Mahal’. The romantic tale from Indian history has been told in a dramatic manner through a live performance by over 80 professional artists packed by latest light and sound technologies. The main attraction of this show is the 12’ Taj Replica weighing 8250 kilos.

What a huge but very impressive day

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal. It doesn’t matter how many photos, videos, or times you’ve visited before, she will take your breath away.

Sunrise is magnificent as you see the white marble building changes its hue with the variations in the daylight

The Taj Mahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the World that symbolizes the love of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal’s final resting place. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. It was completed in 1653 AD. it is believed that it took nearly 22 years to complete the grandeur palace. There are 22 small domes over the Taj Mahal, denoting the same.

A travel day today as we flew back to Delhi to make our way to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal.

We have a stylish and comfy van for the rest of the trip and we checked into the recently renovated Grand Mercure Agra with its gorgeous common spaces, rooftop pool and dining, and we all got Taj view rooms 😍

Exotic India 2024: Day Three

We had an early morning start for our sunrise boat ride on river Ganga.

A dawn rowing boat ride along the Ganges is a quintessential Varanasi experience. The best time to make the trip is from 05:30 when it is cool, the early morning light is particularly inspiring and all the colour and clamour of pilgrims bathing and performing puja unfolds before you.

I hve no words to describe seeing the ancient cremation rituals taking place with the washing of the bodies in the Ganges. It is the most sacred place for one of Hindu faith to be cremated.

We then stopped for a Yoga Session near the Ghats before returning through the bustling streets of Varanasi to our hotel for breakfast.

Later we enjoyed a sightseeing tour of Sarnath followed by a visit to Silk Weaving Workshop.

Sarnath is one of the top four Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in the world where the Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. Buddhists look upon India as the land of Buddha which makes Sarnath a popular tourist attraction. The Emperor Ashoka, who spread the Buddha’s message of love and compassion throughout his vast empire, visited Sarnath around 234BC, and erected a stupa here. Several Buddhist structures were raised at Sarnath between the 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD.

Exotic India 2024: Day Two

We said farewell to Delhi and flew to one of the oldest living cities in the world, Varanasi. It is considered one of the holiest cities for the Hindu faith and thousands of pilgrims visit every day to worship along the banks of the Ganges River.

Tonight we rode tuk tuks from our hotel into downtown Varanasi where we had to continue by foot to the Dashashwamedh Ghat - the oldest and holiest ghat in Varanasi. We were able to witness the evening Ganga Aarti ceremony performed by young pandits (saints) to bless the mother Ganga.

It was crazy, fun, crowded, loud, but definitely an experience you’ll never forget.

Exotic India 2024: Day One

Today we kicked things off with a full day city sightseeing tour of Delhi. Weaving through the traffic of this huge green city where the ancient streets of old Delhi contrast the modern era of New Delhi.

In the morning we visited many special places such as the Qutub Minar, the Red Fort, Jama Mosque, the bustling market streets of Chandi Chowk.

In the afternoon there was a very special visit to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a Sikh house of worship where we were able to have a special behind the scenes visit of the community kitchen that operates around the clock and feeds over 35,000 people per day.

Finally a visit to the UNESCO heritage site of Humayun’s tomb. A beautiful garden tomb dating back to 1565, it is considered to be the precursor to the Taj Mahal.

We ended the day with our welcome dinner at a local restaurant 🤤

Sri Lanka: Day 10

This morning we drove travel to Yala.

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most renowned national park and is famous for Elephant, Leopard, Bear, Crocodile and Wild Boar. Claims have subsequently been made that Yala National Park has the world’s highest concentration of leopard per square kilometer. This park is primarily shrub jungle with several salt and freshwater lagoons. The areas popular with leopard are rock strewn hillocks with dense shrub in which the animals hide.

This afternoon we enjoyed Jeep Safari in Yala National Park. Whilst we didn’t find the elusive leopard, we did find bears which we were told are actually the hardest to find and we saw 3!!

We saw:

Deer
Elks
Monkeys
Crocodiles
An array of bird life
Mongoose
Sri Lankan bears
Wild pigs
Elephants
Water buffalo
Land monitors

Sri Lanka: day 9

The rain cleared overnight and we woke to a stunning sunrise over Adam’s Peak.

98 Acres is a stunning property with the most incredible views from the rooms and the restaurant.

Then it was another big day of adventure. First we hiked little Adam’s peak, which isn’t too long to hike but the terrain is tricky in places. But the views are oh so worth it.

Then we opted to zip line down. It was so much fun and the views again… OMG. 🤩

Finally, we headed over to hike down towards the famous Nine Arches bridge. It was a tricky and slippery hike down but to see this bridge in real life is something else. Its incredible.

Then we managed to jump in a tuk tuk just in time as the rain started and headed for a yummy lunch complete with pitchers of g&t’s. 🍸

Another big but very rewarding day. That’s it for the hiking now…. We’re off to Yala tomorrow for our Safari adventures.
