Our Story
Amigos Travel started with business owner, Lew Pulbrook, who spent several years of the mid 70’s in Europe, North Africa, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, India and Nepal as an overland driver/guide of tour buses full of young adventurers. Lew headed for the shores of South America in January 1979 and became one of the original overland pioneers of the region. After driving buses for another company for a year, Lew bought a bus of his own and spent several months fitting it out in an oil drilling camp in the Amazon. He then started his own camping tour company driving overland from Cartagena on the Caribbean coast of Colombia to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Each tour was 5 months in length. A successful business and passion for this diverse continent were well and truly born. After several years working and living in South America, Lew returned home to Australia and changed the focus of his tours to hotel style tours. He and his team also arranged individual travel itineraries for small groups, couples and families for the next 20 years and became widely known as leaders in this diverse destination. Lews company was bought out in 2005, allowing him important time to spend with his young family.
After having enjoyed the last 10 years of semi- retirement with his young family, Lew now decided to re-enter the market with a new venture – “Amigos Travel”, specialising once again in Latin America. Throughout Lew’s career in travel, he has maintained good friendships with the ground service suppliers in South America and is still recognised as one of the world’s experts on Latin American travel. He is widely known and respected, not only in Australia, but also in Europe, North America, and Central & South America as a pioneer of Latin American travel.
