Today is World Rivers Day!

A day to highlight the importance of our rivers and waterways around the world.

“Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense.”
~ Mark Angelo

The Kinabatagan River in Sabah, Borneo is the second longest river in Malaysia. Stretching 560km from the mountains to the Sulu Sea. It provides life to millions of creatures large and small, including Orangutans, lizards, elephants and crocodiles. It is a must see and a major highlight to visit.

Today is the most important day of the year!!

*** INTERNATIONAL ORANGUTAN DAY ***

From 1992-2000, the population of the Sumatran orangutan is considered to have declined by more than 50%. Its relative, the Bornean orangutan population fell nearly 43 percent in the past decade, from 35,000 in 1996 to 20,000 in 2006. Since these studies were done, deforestation rates have continued to climb which means the actual populations could be well below these.

They are our closest relatives (after the chimpanzee) and this International day was chosen as an opportunity to raise awareness about their fight for survival.

The last few years have been very hard on us all, however, Orangutans were also very much at risk of Covid-19 and with no people travelling to visit them, it meant much-needed funds were not received.

The biggest risk to their survival is the clearing of habitat, mostly for Palm oil plantations. We all try and use Palm Oil free products, but it is very hard when it is cleverly disguised in just about everything we use.

Therefore I ask you to take this opportunity to take part in a local event near to you or donate if you can. Big or small, it all helps. I work with and highly recommend https://orangutanfoundation.org.au. You can even foster an orangutan for only $100 per year (tax-deductible in Aus of course!).

Otherwise, feel free to reach out if you would like more information on Borneo or Orangutans.

Today is International Clouded Leopard Day. Whilst I've never been fortunate enough to see one in the wild, the dream is always there!

Today is a day to increase awareness about this beautiful cat. There are two different species on this planet, with the Sunda Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi) being endemic to Borneo and Sumatra. I've not yet had the changes to see one in the wild, but there is always hope as long as they remain respected and protected.

Who wants to come to Borneo with me next year to try and find one?

Today is International Sun bear day.

Sun bears are the smallest bears with a stocky build, with large paws, strongly curved claws, small rounded ears and a short snout. The fur is generally jet-black, but can vary from grey to red. Sun bears get their name from the characteristic orange to cream coloured chest patch.

The Malayan Sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is listed as Vulnerable to Extinction by the IUCN, and is threatened by habitat loss and hunting for traditional medicine. Its range once extended across mainland Southeast Asia, to Sumatra and Borneo, but the animal now occurs only patchily throughout.

When visiting Sandakan in Sabah, Borneo make sure a visit to the Bornean Sun Bear Conversation Centre to see these endearing animals and learn what can be done to help save them. www.bsbcc.org.my

Today is World Wildlife Day!

An event proclaimed by the UN in support of animals and plants across the world. Their aim to celebrate and raise awareness of the world's wild fauna and flor and recognise the importance of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Each year has a theme and in 2022 it is "Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration'.

Take time today to appreciate your surroundings and if you can donate to a cause helping to save flora and/or fauna in your neighbourhood.
