I’ve wanted to launch a cruise line since I was 27 years old. At first, I wanted to create a cruise-line for under 30-year-olds, but I didn’t have the money. Then it became a cruise line for under 50-year-olds, but I still didn’t have the money. When we finally had the money to bring Virgin Voyages to life, we ditched the age limits and just said, ‘no kids.’ The reason I had been so adamant about a launching cruise line was because the industry was just so ripe for disruption. Cruising should be great. You get to sail the seas, wake up in a new destination every day, party hard, and relax even harder. So why had cruising fallen so fast out of fashion? 2024 has arrived, and Venice is gearing up to introduce a 5 euro entry fee for tourists visiting the city on designated “black sticker” days. This measure, strongly endorsed by the Venice City Council, will kick off as a trial on April 25th and remain in effect for 29 days until the first weekends of July.

Here’s the breakdown of the initiative:

🗓️ **Dates for the Entry Fee:**
- April 25th to May 5th
- All weekends in May (11-12, 18-19, 25-26)
- All weekends in June (8-9, 15-16, 22-23, 29-30, excluding the first)
- First two weekends in July (6-7, 13-14)

🕰️ **Mandatory Fee Hours:**
- 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM on specified dates

During these 29 days marked as “black sticker” days, there won’t be a maximum limit on daily visitors to the city. Venice is committed to leading the way globally in managing overtourism, aiming to strike a balance between the rights of residents, students, workers, and visitors.

The entry fee won’t be applicable to:

- Children under 14
- Residents of the City of Venice
- Workers, including commuters
- Students based in the historic center or smaller islands of Venice

Certain categories will be exempt from payment but will need to register, including:

- Tourists staying in accommodations within the municipal territory
- Residents in the Veneto region
- Individuals requiring medical care
- Participants in sports competitions
- On-duty law enforcement
- Family members of residents in areas with the entry fee

Daily tourists should register their reservation on the dedicated website, make the payment if necessary, and receive a QR code to show to controllers. Penalties for non-compliance range from 50 to 300 euros.

Crew very happy to be across the line!

Not the result we would have liked placement-wise, but very much a case of incredibly proud, glad, relieved, ha, to make it - that was tough.

The fact that we didn’t experience anything extreme in terms of peak wind strengths is a poor reflection of how brutal it was. Lots of heavy upwind sailing, wind relentlessly on the nose or maddeningly non-existent for periods.

To quote Annie, nothing really broken onboard, just 6 people.

Our inside stateroom on Disney Wonder.

The lounge was turned down at night by our lovely room attendant into a bed, complete with bed rail (i’ll post a photo in the comments). It was perfect for our daughter but would be a bit uncomfortable for an adult - it was quite hard.

There’s a curtain that can be pulled across to divide the bedroom and lounge. This was helpful for getting Sienna to sleep, we could relax on our phones and keep her space dark for her to nod off.

For the adults we had a very comfortable queen size bed.

The TV is full of Disney movies and TV shows, as well as a selection of other channels. The theatre shows are also available in room, if you can’t make it or like us you needed to leave before the end. These are pre-recorded so not the same cast but still enjoyable.

Room service is included but tipping is expected.

The TV position I found a little annoying but in my mums cabin it was towards the end of the bench, closer to the main bed.

The bathroom was a bit tight but most cruise ship bathrooms are. Other stateroom categories have a seperate toilet to bathroom which is much better.

The included shampoo, conditioner, body wash and moisturiser was good quality and I happily used it.

Each day you get a morning room re-fresh and then nightly turndown with complimentary chocolates.

I enjoyed the decor of our cabin, the hues of blue and cream felt fresh.

For a short cruise i’d absolutely stay in an inside cabin again. I enjoy inside staterooms as you never have to worry about being woken up by the outside world peeking through the blinds. Sleeping in (if the kids allow) is very easy.

Disney wonder down under - review

Reflecting on our recent two-night cruise aboard the Disney Wonder in Australia brings back a wave of special memories. The idea of a Disney cruise in Australia holds a certain appeal, promising a distinct seafaring adventure for fellow Aussies to consider.

Dining on a Disney cruise really sets it apart from other cruise lines with it's unique concept of rotational dining, where you get to explore a variety of themed restaurants throughout your cruise. Animator's Palate was a visual feast (and my fave), bringing our drawings to life in a mesmerising display. Tiana's Place, on the other hand, immersed us in the vibrant ambiance of New Orleans, offering not just delicious cuisine but a lively atmosphere with live jazz music and Tiana welcomed us herself!

The rotation system ensures that you're never stuck with the same setting, keeping things fresh and exciting. The culinary journey extends beyond traditional cruise fare, with each restaurant offering a distinct menu and dining experience. The quality of the food was consistently impressive, and the service was top-notch, with attentive and friendly staff always ready to cater to our needs. The continuity provided by the wait staff is also a lovely Disney touch. The team that serves you on night one stays with you for the entire cruise, creating a personalised connection as they get to know your preferences. This continuity allowed them to ensure that any dietary or special requests were consistently met, and they even remembered our favourite drinks! With our daughter being Autistic and very selective with what she eats they made sure her special meal was ready for her.

From themed dinners to character appearances during meals, every dining moment felt like a special event. It's not just about the food; it's about the immersive experience that Disney brings to the table, making each meal a memorable part of the overall cruise adventure.

The stage shows on the Disney Wonder were a true highlight of our cruise, offering a captivating blend of storytelling, music, and stunning production values.

One standout was "Heroes Unite," an outdoor deck show that took the entertainment experience to new heights and includes fireworks at sea (bring your jacket as it can get chilly). However, the magic extended beyond the deck, with Broadway-style productions taking place in the theater. The attention to detail in sets and costumes was remarkable, creating an immersive experience for the audience.

The variety of stage shows ensured there was something for everyone, from classic Disney tales to contemporary hits. The performances were not just for the kids; adults could appreciate the talent and creativity that went into each show. The energy of the cast was infectious, and the live music added an extra layer of excitement.

What truly impressed us was the commitment to quality. The stage shows weren't just an afterthought; they were a central part of the cruise experience. Whether it was a Broadway-caliber musical or an innovative deck show, the stage productions on the Disney Wonder were a testament to Disney's dedication to creating unforgettable moments at sea.

The cabins were a decent size for the 3 of us ( 2 x adults and 1 x 6 year old), and the option to request rails for children, even on the sofa bed, made our stay worry-free. I'll do a seperate post showing you our inside stateroom in more detail.

Meeting characters was a blast, though the lines were long. I've heard they've made improvements on recent cruises, which is great news. And here's a tip: merchandise can fly off the shelves, so grab what you fancy when you see it; it might not be there later.

One thing worth noting is that the cruise is accommodating for families with children with disabilities, and I'll share more details on that in a separate post.

Disney cruise managed to capture the magic without being too overt. It wasn't an overwhelming, in-your-face Disney experience. The decor was tasteful, adding a touch of Disney charm without overshadowing the cruise's overall ambiance. It's a subtle and refined approach that allows guests to enjoy the Disney magic in a more understated manner.

As we bring our Disney cruise to a close, it's impossible to ignore that the two nights were an exhilarating whirlwind. Packed to the brim with excitement, it was at times exhausting, but every moment was well worth the adventure. While short and jam-packed, the experience was nothing short of magical, leaving us with memories that make the fatigue entirely worthwhile.
