🔵 COMMON CLAIMS 🔴

‼️ Colitis ‼️

Defined as inflammation of the large intestine, Colitis can affect both adult horses and foals. Clinical signs include dull demeanour, inappetence, high temperature, high heart rate, dehydration and profuse watery diarrhoea.

It is commonly seen in stabled racehorses on high grain diets receiving antibiotic treatment which leads to bacterial imbalance and an inflamed colon.

The damaged colon will lose large volumes of fluids, electrolytes and protein and absorb endotoxins produced by bacteria which cause severe dehydration, diarrhoea and shock that can rapidly progress to death.

Key to treatment is early hospitalisation and treatment with large volumes of intravenous fluids and protein (plasma) and addressing the endotoxaemia.

A good high fibre diet, judicious use of antibiotics under veterinary direction and a low stress environment will go a long way preventing Colitis.

At HQ, we offer Life Saving Surgery options to cover you financially in the event of a surgery claim for treatment of Colitis (which must be performed under sedation or general anaesthesia in a surgical clinic) that is deemed required to save the horses life by a veterinarian.
