World Sea Turtle Day - 16 June 2021
Of the Seven sea turtle species, SIX are listed by the IUCN Red List as either vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.
They are:
Leatherback turtle (vulnerable)
Loggerhead Turtle (vulnerable)
Hawksbill Turtle (critically endangered)
Green Sea turtles (endangered)
Kemp’s Ridley (critically endangered)
Olive Ridley (vulnerable)
Flatback Sea Turtle (data deficient - this means we do not know enough about them...)
What can you do to protect sea turtles?
- At night, keep bright lights off the beach to encourage sea turtles to nest and to ensure hatchlings can find their way to the sea.
- Keep beaches trash free to avoid turtles mistaking it for food or getting caught in plastic loops. Single use plastic bags are often mistaken by sea turtles for their favorite food, jellyfish. Consumption can cause them to suffocate.
- Join a coastal conservation effort working to protect sea turtle nests from predators.

What if there was no birds or no fish where would we be then? We would have failed in protecting our Earth as the loss of wild life is a direct consequence of actions on it i.e. habitat clearing for fields.
Everyone can take a step for a healthy planet with simple actions. How about picking up a piece of plastic rubbish & putting it in the waste bin or what about taking your own cup to the cafe for your coffee & save the waste of that single use coffee cup . Or what about switching off all those appliances that are on stand-by? - yes everyone has at least one of those...( Google appliances on standby to see the data, it will shock you).
These actions are small steps but we all need to start somewhere as they are part of the bigger picture, our world.
