Station Stays SA Have you ever dreamed of living like a local in the South Australian outback? Station stays are the most relaxing way to experience it.

Stations in the Flinders and Gawler Ranges are mostly sheep properties and are generally smaller than Outback stations further north, which cover vast areas. Properties vary in size, shape and character. Station Stays SA will help you chose accommodation and activities to suit your style of holiday. Accommodation styles range from modest shearers quarters to elegant homesteads, where you can cater

for yourself, or join your host family for meals. The meals are a particularly enjoyable part of any historic accommodation experience. Large cooked breakfasts and homemade dinners using fresh produce are provided by friendly hosts who delight in sharing their house with guests. Stations offer a range of experience for you. Some offer superb 4WD tracks to explore. You can stretch your legs hiking to places which other travellers wont get to see. You can take a guided tour with the host. Whichever style of accommodation you choose, a station stay will offer a glimpse into another life and take you away from the hustle and bustle of urban living.

Meet Jim and Teresa Connell, the owners of Horseshoe Top-End and members of Station Stays SA since 2010. They love welcoming visitors to their property nestled in the unique Horseshoe Range – a miniature Wilpena Pound – to experience the stunning beauty of the landscape.

Passionate about conservation, Jim and Teresa are also dedicated to preserving remnant vegetation on their property for future generations. By diversifying into tourism, they’ve reduced sheep numbers and set aside land specifically for environmental protection. Their children and grandchildren play an active role in this vital work, ensuring the property’s legacy for years to come.

A favourite place for Jim and Teresa to relax after a busy day is Longview Lookout, glass of wine in hand, as they watch the sunset. It is also a must do for many of their guests!

* Meet the Members! *
Property: Holowiliena Station
Owner operators: Luke and Frances Frahn

Luke and Frances worked in the wool industry as a shearer and wool classer before settling at Holowiliena, a Flinders Ranges sheep station established by Frances’ ancestors, the Warwick family, in 1852.

Holowiliena Station first ventured into tourism with guided tours of the historic buildings. They have since brought the 170-year-old blacksmith shop back to life and turned the old “Single Men’s Quarters” Cottage into a B&B. One of Luke’s priorities was to improve the Shearers Quarters comfort for visiting shearers while maintaining the traditional feel. The Quarters are now available for visitor bookings.

Luke and Frances enjoy sharing the station life, environment, history and stories of Holowiliena with guests.

Property: Catninga,
Owner operators: Brian and Heather
Catninga is a small pastoral property 26k’s south east of Port Augusta in the flinders Ranges.

Heather is a lifelong local, grown up in the district on a merino sheep property with a few beef cattle and horses.

Brian came from a grain farming background, went to Roseworthy Ag College, then completed his Wool Classing Certificate which took him around the bush before settling into a teaching career in Agriculture and Physical Education.

With a desire to end up in a Pastoral area, Brian was drawn to Tafe at Port Augusta where he coordinated the Pastoral traineeships throughout Northern SA and beyond.

40+ years ago his love of everything pastoral lead him to Catninga. A rugged grazing property running merino sheep and cattle.
Both Brian and Heather have a love of horses and still use their horses for mustering and enjoy riding on the property when time allows.

Heather and Brian added tourism into the mix over 10 years ago, and enjoy meeting visitors and being members of Station Stays SA.
Catninga has been voted Runner up for South Australia’s Best Hipcamp in 2023 and again in 2024.

Catninga is located in the middle of the Southern and Northern Flinders Ranges with a mix of bush camping, powered sites and accommodation. There is something for every type of vacation including hiking & 4wd’ing offered on the property.

With an easy drive to most attractions, it’s an ideal base while you visit all of the must-see places in the area.

We look forward to welcoming both new and return visitors to Catninga in 2025. www.catninga.com
