Karley Dunne Harvest
Hello Monday!
Monday is a good day to have a great day 😀 @Karley Dunne sent us this video of her driving the header which is emptying grains of harvested wheat out into the chaser bin on their family farming property at Beacon in the Shire of Mt Marshall and they are very happy to be back harvesting after the rains ⛈️ last week bought it all to a standstill.
🤞 Fingers crossed for clear skies for the week ahead happy harvesting and have a great week everyone!
Cleomine the Horse
We can't pass up a Melbourne Cup Day without featuring our own famous Wheatbelt Horse - Cleomine!
This wind powered metal horse just out in the Shire of Mukinbudin marks the place where Perth bookmaker and racehorse owner George Lansdell farmed.
The property was called Cleomine after George’s greatest horse, thought to be the 1920’s equivalent to Black Caviar!!
Along with running sheep cattle and turkeys on his farm, George Lansdell spelled many horses and housed jockeys who came to the property to work and rest. 🐴
The galloping horse on the Mukinbudin North roadside was built by the Mukinbudin Community Shed.

Harvest has begun in the Wheatbelt Way!
Thank you to everyone for joining us on our October History Month journey, we hope you enjoyed looking back as much as we did. Over the last two weeks harvesting crops (wheat, barley, lupins, and canola are the main crops) has begun in the Wheatbelt Way. The crops have been drying down quickly with a lack of finishing rain not coming over the months of August and September in our region.
Mother nature did decide to let us know though that she was not ready for it to warm up and be smooth sailing - check out these threatening skies last week as the header is emptying into the Chaser bin! This video was provided by local Marilyn Dunne, from Beacon, Western Australia in the Shire of Mt Marshall.
Maintaining the quality of grain is dependent on the correct and timely
harvesting of the grain, and its management and storage once removed from the paddock. The harvesting operation is crucial in determining the grain yield and quality. Head loss or weather damage means crops should be harvested as soon as the crop is at a moisture content that is suitable for storage. So follow us this month as we share with you all about Harvest in the Wheatbelt Way.

Ewes and Lambs in the Wheatbelt Way
Winter is green paddocks, cold days and it will see many farmers out tending to their sheep flocks! Many lambs have been born across the Wheatbelt Way over the last few months and just like newborn babies they need a lot of looking after. Animal health and welfare are the number 1 priority.
Lambs will have ear tags placed in their ears to identify them and vaccinations gave to minimise outbreaks of disease and for the protection against parasites including worms, lice, and blowflies.
At around 14.2 million sheep, the WA flock turns off approximately 5.7 million sheep and lambs for meat and live export as well as 72 million kilograms of greasy wool (primarily for export markets) annually.
The Merino is the most common breed of sheep in WA, making up 80% of the state's flock. The remainder are ‘British breeds’ or so-called maternal breeds, meat specific breeds such as Dorpers and some breeds for specialty meat and fibre markets.
