Artback NT

Artback NT Artback NT connects people and place through arts development and touring. We ignite sparks in a creative Northern Territory.

Artback NT is a dynamic organisation bringing together Northern Territory artists with presenters seeking authentic arts and cultural experiences for their audiences and communities. We are the gateway to sharing the rich cultures, stories and art of the Territory with Australia and the rest of the world. We develop, produce, curate and present ambitious, professional and energetic work to and fro

m some of Australia’s most remote locations. From visual arts to performing arts, music, traditional and contemporary dance, we recognise the importance of identity, connection to culture and the intrinsic value of arts and culture to community health and wellbeing. Deep connections and consultation with communities inform our approach to arts and cultural development. We activate creative participation, revealing an entire new world for regional, remote and very remote communities who are often left off the touring map. In 2019, we travelled over 518,269 kilometres delivering 151 arts activities across 81 locations, reaching audiences of over 80,951 nationally and internationally. The organisation presented 67 workshops and facilitated 49 school events, while engaging a total of 781 artists and arts workers, including 730 Indigenous artists and arts workers, of which 84% were from remote or very remote locations throughout the Northern Territory. Since 1996, Artback NT has reached audiences of over 2.76 million. From the Tiwi Island footy club to the National Gallery of Australia, we reach into every corner of this country. We provide communities and artists with new ways to share their stories, build respect for their work and, in turn, generate lasting positive community impact. We are the conduit for local, national and international audiences who are seeking work that provides access into the talent and passion of an Australia far beyond the highway.

Malandarri Festival Special Announcement 📣

Borroloola favourites, The Sandridge Band, known for their hard edged rock ‘n’ roll and reggae mix, will be performing at the Malandarri Festival! 🔥🔥🔥

The Sandridge Band perform a unique original blend of roots, reggae and blues from Kununurra to Broome, Fitzroy Crossing to Warmun, and all the spots in between.

Combining traditional and contemporary songs, The Sandridge Band create music that reveals what life is like living in a small community, getting their audiences up and dancing with a huge set list that smoothly blends Indigenous languages with contemporary rock ‘n’ roll.

The Sandridge Band has produced an incredible sound in their new album, ‘Brolga Dreaming’, combining influences from each band members’ clans including Yanyuwa, Gurrawa, Mara and Gurdanji tribes of the Borroloola Gulf Region.

This new release has been celebrated through a string of live shows, with The Sandridge Band performing at Alice Springs Bush Bands Bash, Tennant Creek Desert Harmony Festival, Barunga Festival and a tour through the APY Lands with Nabalek Band.

We can’t wait to see The Sandridge Band perform LIVE at Malandarri Festival this week!

Dance Group Spotlight 🔥

The Yanyuwa Dance Group celebrates the essence of the dancing spirit, embodies a dreamtime spirit often referred to as the "mermaid." According to Yanyuwa tradition, the mermaid journeyed from the tablelands towards the coast to join forces with the coastal mermaids of the Yanyuwa country. Together, they birthed the Ngardiji dance, a powerful expression of unity and cultural significance.

In addition to the Ngardiji dance, the group showcases dance originating from saltwater country. These performances come to life on the traditional homelands of the Yanyuwa people. Through movements and narratives passed down over generations, these dances narrate tales dating back over 100 years, depicting the rhythms of the sea, the ebb and flow of tides, the graceful flight of birds, and the essence of life during the early days.

The Yanyuwa Dance Group pays also homage to the Makassans, seafaring traders from Indonesia who once frequented the northern shores and have a deep connection to Indigenous Australians. These traders engaged in the collection of trepang and fostered harmonious relationships with the Yanyuwa and Marra people as well as many other clans and groups across the NT. Through dance, the group commemorates this historical interaction, honouring the spirit of cooperation and cultural exchange that defined this era.

"We hope Clay on Country’s audiences across Australia will find, amongst the stories told through this exhibition, reference points and resonance with their own stories, for while the artists in the exhibition share their uniquely Territorian experiences, they simultaneously speak of the complexity of our nation’s history. It is the exercise of recalling and reflecting, of truth telling, and deep diving with all its occasional discomfort, that Clay on Country does with such grace and generosity." - Shay Vigona-Goudge, Chief Executive Officer, Artback NT.

Our Story

Artback NT delivers art to and from regional and remote areas - we link communities, empower artists, present quality cultural experiences and facilitate local and national outcomes. Covering a landscape of over 1.3 million square kilometres, Artback NT ignites sparks in a creative Northern Territory. Delivering artistic programs that incorporate uniquely Territory stories across the breadth of the NT, Artback NT’s multi-art form program (visual arts, music, performing arts and Indigenous traditional dance) sees the organisation represented with offices in Darwin, Alice Springs and Borroloola. Artback NT activates creative participation across the Territory and continues to promote excellence and advocate for NT artists at a national level.
