TODAY is World Kangaroo Day
TELL US your best Kangaroo experience.
World Kangaroo Day was started in 2020 through the collaborative efforts of Kangaroos Alive and the Animal Justice Party with the purpose of raising public awareness about the need that these beautiful and majestic creatures have for protection and care. This day comes with a call for a moratorium on killing kangaroos for commercial use, and the inaugural event was endorsed by famous Australian cricket player and cricket coach Jason “Dizzy” Gillespie.
Part of the motivation behind starting the day was in response to the devastating bushfires that took place in Australia in late 2019 and early 2020 which killed off many of the kangaroos and other wildlife in the country. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 3 billion koalas, kangaroos and other native animals lost their lives in the fires.
The theme for World Kangaroo Day is “Co-existing with Kangaroos”, encouraging the people of Australia to think about the way that they share their space with these fascinating, powerful creatures.
The World Kangaroo Day Ambassador this year is Jason "Dizzy" Gillespie.

SOUND ALERTS ~ This morning on a sunrise bushwalk along the Prince Henry Cliff Walk Katoomba, the Cicada sounds were so loud they reached 106db (subway train). We were even getting a "Loud Environment" alert on an Apple watch.
To measure the sound we used a free web service: https://youlean.co/online-loudness-meter. If iPhone users open the link in Safari, this way you can save the page for future use on your home screen like an app.
BACKSTORY: Cicadas in Australia are known for their remarkably loud sounds, which can reach up to 120 decibels. This level of noise is comparable to that of a chainsaw or a rock concert and can be painful to human ears if experienced for extended periods. The loudest cicadas, such as the Greengrocer (Cyclochila australasiae), are considered among the loudest insects in the world.
Around Australia, the buzz-saw siren of cicadas heralds the beginning of summer. With 237 recorded species of cicada in Australia, almost no area of the country is untouched by their song. Up to 800 species in Australia are still to be scientifically recognised.
As the world’s loudest insects, the ear-splitting call from the males is a love song to draw their mates near. But humans, too, have been drawn to singing cicadas, with the insects featuring in ancient poetry and literature of different cultures for thousands of years.
