Pat Cummins turns craft beer investor. The men’s cricket captain has become the first outside investor with Mountain Culture Beer Co

SMH report: "Cummins has become the first investor in Mountain Culture Beer Co, a Blue Mountains-based craft brewer based a stone’s throw from the skipper’s childhood home.

“Mountain Culture is from where I grew up [in the Blue Mountains]. Their new brew pub in Emu Plains is right across the road from where Dad worked for 30 years, and I drove past that site basically every single day in my childhood,” Cummins told us.

HEADS UP ~ Medlow Bath pedestrian bridge to be lifted into place

A major section of a new 105-metre long pedestrian bridge across the Great Western Highway will be lifted into place next week, paving the way for improved safety benefits for the local community.

The new bridge is a key element of the $176.6 million upgrade of the highway through Medlow Bath and, when completed, will allow safer access to both sides of the road for all pedestrians including people with disabilities, families with prams, and rail passengers who might be carrying heavy luggage.

Once the bridge opens to traffic in early 2025, pedestrians will be able to cross the highway and access the Medlow Bath train station without interacting with road or rail traffic, dramatically increasing safety for all pedestrians in Medlow Bath.

The bridge’s unique design featuring sleek curves has been developed to sit neatly within the Medlow Bath landscape without detracting from the village feel of the area.

“The new pedestrian bridge will transform the way people move around the village,” Transport for NSW Acting Regional Director West Holly Davies said.

“The bridge weighs 178 tonnes and comprises six individual segments, each constructed from Australian-made steel out of BlueScope Port Kembla.

“Three of the segments were installed in October and the two final pieces will fit into place in December, but next week we will see the key section that will take pedestrians across the four lanes of highway lifted into position by a 400-tonne crane in a single night shift on Tuesday 12 November.

“The work will be done at night when there is less traffic on the highway but the road will still need to be temporarily closed throughout the night for the safety of workers and road users.

“We appreciate the patience of residents while we complete this important safety upgrade for pedestrians in the local community.”

The final bridge design was determined following consultation between Transport for NSW, Heritage NSW and Blue Mountains City Council, as well as community members of the Pedestrian Bridge Working Group and Aboriginal representatives to ensure it met the community’s needs in terms of both usage and look.

There will be a lift at the western end of the bridge and, for the first time in NSW, the bridge design features a suspended recycled composite material floor to reduce slip risks following snow or on icy mornings.

The upgrade also includes a new lift and upgraded stairs from an existing heritage bridge to the Medlow Bath Railway Station.

The new bridge is expected to open to pedestrian traffic in early 2025.

The main bridge segment will be delivered to site on Monday 11 November, ready to be lifted into place on Tuesday 12 November.

The bridge lift will be completed overnight between 11pm and 4am, weather permitting.

Changed traffic conditions including a reduced speed limit will be in place on Tuesday 12 November, along with a one-hour closure of the Great Western Highway from 11pm-midnight and then temporary closures for up to 30 minutes as crews continue working throughout the night.

All road users are advised to plan their trips, follow the directions of signs and traffic control, and allow for extra travel time. Motorists may want to consider using Bells Line of Road to avoid delays.

SUNDAY WALK ~ The "Apprentices Arch Bridge" in Katoomba, is a wonderful spot hidden in plain sight. This is a shortie, but a goodie.

Starts here: https://w3w.co/burner.slimmer.wiping This is a residential area so be mindful of those who live nearby.

This small masonry arch bridge replaced a crumbling railway sleeper footbridge across Cascade Creek at the bottom of Cumberland Street in 1999. Here: www.w3w.co/vacuum.excellent.protruding

The Gazette did a story on it in 2014. "The bridge was the idea of Robert Whittaker. He enlisted the help of fellow TAFE teachers, Ted Alderson and Michael Landers from Miller TAFE, who engaged their stonemasonry students, notably Stuart Briggs and Graham Wilson, who carved the two main keystones.

The stone was donated by the Department of Public Works and Blue Mountains City Council engaged a contractor to put it all together.

"He calls himself "just a crotchety old builder" but Katoomba's Adjunct Professor Robert Whittaker is also the Mountains' latest member of the Order of Australia.

"I really don't understand this," he said. "I am tickled pink. But it struck me as bizarre that this sort of thing gets rewarded."

"This sort of thing" is a career in the building industry, including roles as president or chairman of many industry bodies, plus more than 20 years teaching.

Mr Whittaker, who has a building degree ("not engineering, not architecture, pure building," he said proudly), is currently the national president of the Australian Institute of Building, having previously served as senior vice-president for eight years. He has also chaired the National Education Committee and the NSW Chapter Education Committee.

Most of his early working life was spent in private industry but it was his move to teaching 20 years ago that proved life-changing, he said.

He also designed the so-called Apprentices Arch bridge which links a pedestrian walkway between Katoomba and Leura, just beyond his backyard at the end of Wilson Street.

"The old bridge was made of sleepers, which had holes in them, a couple of telegraph poles, and just one handrail," Mr Whittaker said.

"I didn't mind the romance of it but it was going to have to be replaced one day. So I designed its replacement."

TODAY it was time for a regular catchup with some of our amazing contributors.

We had a great morning capturing the best of sunrise around Cahills Lookout Katoomba. Then we enjoyed breakfast at Café Lurline, Katoomba. There are quite a few photos, but it's worth browsing through them.

We are so lucky to have such talented contributors. We hope you enjoy their work as much as we do.

In no particular order, we have Michael Connolly, Rob Moore, Ian Smith, Despina Caruana, Logan Spice, Brett Greenhalgh, Troy Hovenden, Karen Edwards, Philip Johnson, Annie Hand, Emma Gabriel, Elly and Robyn Catchlove.

To those who couldn't make it, you missed a great morning. Congratulations to Troy who won our "Golden Trowel" award.

SPECIAL THANKS to Chef Jackie, Adrian and staff at Café Lurline for opening early for us and for turning a "deaf ear" to the often rambunctious revelry.
