Recent studies conducted by Flinders University have uncovered 3 new species of Protemnodon (ancient kangaroo ancestor) from 50,000 years ago. One of those was about twice the size of the modern red kangaroo, at 190kg (420lb).

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of Australia - The Protemnodons and Diprotodons who were sadly brought to extinction, killed as a food source when man first walked the earth in Australia some 40,000 years ago..

We took an Italian family to see one of Sydney's colonies of fruit bats yesterday. The colony would have at least a thousand flying foxes. We watched them sleeping, flying, squawking and even turning upside down to defecate. For more information see https://www.sydney-tours.com.au/flying-foxes/

Don't go chasin' waterfalls.

Whilst there are many beautiful waterfalls around Sydney, there are very few within the Greater Sydney area. The most beautiful and largest would be Curracurrong Falls in the Royal National Park. Whilst it is by no means large, it is interesting as it is one of the only waterfalls in the world to exit directly into the ocean.

Just a quick refreshing look at Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. The series was released in 1960s and featured a kangaroo and his friend Sonny Hammond. It was the Australian equivalent of Lassie.

Yesterday, we were fortunate enough to share the day with the Hale family from USA. We were lucky enough to see wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, a water dragon, lyrebirds, galahs, cockatoos, corellas, and kookaburras. The picture below is of an echidna that crossed the road and made a beeline to one of our guests.

An Australian man was killed by a kangaroo in a rare fatal attack earlier this week, the first fatal kangaroo attack since 1936

PERTH, Australia — A man who may have been keeping a wild kangaroo as a pet was killed by the animal in southwest Australia, police said Tuesday.

Whilst there have been a number of serious injuries over the years involving kangaroos, it was reportedly the first fatal attack by a kangaroo in Australia since 1936.

A relative found the 77-year-old man with "serious injuries" on his property Sunday in semirural Redmond, 400 kilometres (250 miles) southeast of the Western Australia state capital Perth.

It was believed he had been attacked earlier in the day by the kangaroo, which police shot dead because it was preventing paramedics from reaching the injured man, police said.

The man died at the scene. Police are preparing a report for a coroner who will record an official cause to death.

Police believe the victim had been keeping the wild kangaroo as a pet. This was a large adult male kangaroo and they become quite aggressive and they don't do well in captivity.

There are legal restrictions on keeping Australian native fauna as pets, but the police media office said Tuesday they had no information to make public regarding whether the victim had a permit.

The males can be aggressive and fight people with the same techniques as they use with each other. They use their short upper limbs to grapple with their opponent, use their muscular tails to take their body weight, then lash out with both their powerful clawed hind legs.

In 1936, William Cruickshank, 38, died in a hospital in Hillston in New South Wales state on the Australian east coast months after he'd been attacked by a kangaroo. Cruickshank suffered extensive head injuries including a broken jaw as he attempted to rescue his two dogs from a large kangaroo, The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported at the time. In this instance the dogs, a natural predator would have caused the kangaroo to become aggressive.

I was asked a question on a tour yesterday "What does a wombat look like?" The passengers were American. So the only way that I thought to describe it was that it was like a Capybara but was larger with shorter stockier legs. They looked at the image on a mobile phone and said it looked like a hyrax (or dassie) which it does.
