There’s no better way to discover hundreds of the beautiful small winding alleys of the Medina, the old town of Chefchaouen than to get lost in the city that is painted in the different shades of blue.

Why blue? Tradition of painting buildings blue…reminded Jews and Muslims alike [the villagers] of the sky and the presence of God.” Another consideration is that the pale blue colour serves to keep the houses cool in the hot Moroccan summers. Yet another claim is that blue is actually a natural preventive against mosquitos and, by extension, malaria.

The word Riad comes from the Arabian term for garden, "Ryad".

After the establishment of the Islamic state of Morocco by Sultan Moulay Idriss I during the 7th Century, the building remains of the ancient Roman city of Volubilis near Fez influenced the architecture of the Riad. Particularly by the royal families and powerful people in the imperial cities of Fez and Marrakech Riads where they were enhanced by the Andalusian Artisans (Spain).

An important design concern was Islamic notions of privacy for women inside residential gardens. When the Almoravids conquered Spain in the 11th century they sent Muslim, Christian and Jewish artisans from Spain to Morocco to work on monuments. The riads were inward focused, which allowed for family privacy and protection from the weather in Morocco. This inward focus was expressed in the central location of most of the interior gardens and courtyards and the lack of large windows on the exterior clay or mud brick walls.

Downtown Cairo was designed by prestigious French architects who were commissioned by Khedive Ismail,
the grandson of Mohamed Ali Pasha, an Ottoman ruler who governed Egypt in the mid -19th century.

During his visit to Paris, and since then he wanted to make the Egyptian Kingdom capital better than Paris and to be the jewel of the orient.

In 1925, Cairo won the title of the most beautiful city in the world, even though European cities like Berlin, Paris and London were also competing.
