Catherine, an Australian expat in London, is infertile and desperate. She hires Nellie, a US surrogate, to fulfil her dream of becoming a mother, beginning a journey that creates and changes lives. Written with compassion and humour by former 'Age journalist Jane Cafarella, 'e-baby' is inspired by interviews with infertile women and surrogates who share their stories online. The play has just been

recognised as one of the top new scripts of 2016 (Kevin Jackson theatre diarist). e-baby has been performed in Melbourne and Tasmania, with a play reading in London. The script is available at https://australianplays.org/script/ASC-1629

'e-baby' was first directed & dramaturged by Anna McCrossin-Owen, who has directed for Melbourne Festival, Melbourne Fringe, Full Tilt at the Arts Centre, Essential Theatre Shakespeare in the Vines Aust/NZ tours and Victoria State Opera, including new Australian writing, monologue, Shakespeare, comedy, opera and music theatre. In Melbourne, 'e-baby' starred Carolyn Bock, (The Penelopiad, Lost In Ringwood, Two Sisters and A Piano, INXS - The Untold Story, Dr Blake Mysteries, Winners and Losers, Neighbours and City Homicide) and Sarah Ranken, (Uncle Vanya, Leongatha, Plague).

Small independent theatre - the keeper of dreams

The sum was 314 pounds – 314 pounds of hope. That was the modest distribution sum I received this quarter from publishing and licensing agent David Waters at Stagescripts in London, which licences my play e-baby for productions in Europe and the USA....

A shout out to small independent theatre companies and publishing houses, who are keeping dreams alive for independent playwrights during Covid19.

e-baby coming to Missouri and Spain - eventually...

2020 was both an exciting and disappointing year for e-baby. I was thrilled when Talking Horse Productions, a small independent theatre company in Columbia, Missouri, optioned the rights for a production of the play, along with Les Antonietes Theatre Company, in Barcelona, Spain, who plan to translate it into Catalan and tour Catalonia (and if all goes well, also tour Spain). Sadly, Covid 19 has put a stop to all that for now.
I've provided background and promotional material for Talking Horse, and kept in contact with Talking Horse Artistic Director Adam Brietzke. I've also adapted the script for translation into Catalan for Les Antonietes', working with producer Raul Perales Haro, but now it's just a waiting game for us all.
It's especially sad and difficult for small production companies at present, who don't always have government support, and usually depend on the passion and dedication of a few to keep things going. As a playwright, I'm always so grateful to these groups, who give playwrights a voice and an audience. I hope that they can manage to survive until Europe and the USA can get Covid under control.
Until Covid, e-baby was continuing its tradition of a production every year somewhere in the world since its Melbourne premiere in 2015 - which has been humbling and amazing.
Meanwhile, if anyone is interested in a radio play adaptation of e-baby please let me know. I've always loved radio plays (I'm working on one right now on another topic). In the absence of physical theatre, this just might be the way forward.
Here's Gabrielle Scawthorn as Nellie, in the Sydney production in 2016 directed by Nadia Tass at The Ensemble Theatre. This is one of my favourite photos as it encapsulates Nellie's character beautifully.
