An Evolving, Revolutionary, Chaotic, Touring Fundraiser
A New Burma is an ongoing collaborative exhibition project touring major cities around the world, amplifying the messages of artists and critical voices so bravely standing up for a future inclusive of all who would call Myanmar home.
This latest fundraising exhibition will take the success of their first show in Bangkok and bring it to the heart of Melbourne. This edition will be called Whistleblowers.
Photographs, video installations, audio experiences and more will take visitors on journeys, not shying from the horrors of brutal suppression, but importantly highlighting the courageously creative ongoing journeys of a new generation of creative passionate young people.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO: During Myanmar’s Rainy season, torrential downpours punctuate each day. They usually fiercely arrive on the tail of roaring winds that blow in as the prelude for each storm. Anyone who can, usually get out of its path until it’s over. Peaceful and quiet again.

In late May when the rains first begin, they are refreshing relief from the hot-dry season. The temperature cools to comfortable, the weight of the tropical air lifts and the dust washes away so the foliage shines once again like it’s been hand polished.

HERE STORY: She welcomed us into her home and gave us tea. She emanated kindness and grace. - The second is reflected in her elongated form which is in-part created by her neck-rings. This swan-like elegance is a symbol of her traditional Animist beliefs. She tenderly shared stories of her long life. -The trauma of out-living some of her children, and how she has survived through both war and peace. She is a Kayan Woman and her true home is Myanmar.

RIVER LIFE: The River Than Lwin near Hpa-an is a lifeline for communities, providing water for living, and growing rice in the river-flat paddies. This classical-painting-like scene is in part created by the ring of mountainous limestone crags layered into the distance. While the afternoon light filtering through the smoke from fires stoked in readiness for cooking adds to the drama.

HER STORY:
Both a mother and grandmother to many, we shared tea as well as stories of our homes and families. Her headdress is adorned with heirloom coins from different parts of the world. Some that are hundreds of years old. The Akha are traditionally Animists and she wears this headdress always. It keeps her soul safe and away from spirits who may otherwise sn**ch it from her through the chakra at the top of her head.

George Orwell first imagined his book, "Burmese Days" stationed in Katha as part of the British Indian Imperial Police Force. Still now, Katha's streets echo it's colonial history and the town is surrounded by a seamless blend of lush forests with roaming elephants, and picture-perfect farmland. This fairytale like scene reunited me with one of the book's famous quotes: “Beauty is meaningless until it is shared.”

TEAMWORK: Just like this family, on shorelines around the country fishing families rise before dawn every day. It's hard work. Especially for the shore team who haul in the nets, and who are often women. This photograph captures the silent communication between the boat captain and his wife.
