Steamrail Victoria Mainline Heritage Steam, Diesel and Electric Trips around Victoria Most importantly to you our passengers. Without your support none of this would be possible.

“The Vintage Train”
In 1965 the Steam Preservation Coordinating Committee (SPCC) was formed to arrange cleaning of steam locomotives and retention of turntables and watering facilities for the continued operation of steam specials on the Victorian Railways network. That 50 years on we are still able to operate these specials is a testament to those who had the vision and sheer determination in the

early days of preservation. What was the SPCC became Steamrail Victoria and then began the restoration and maintenance of the trains we now operate. Today is a celebration of not just the trains but the passionate people who have contributed to our success over 50 years. May we continue to capture your imagination for the next 50 years! Keen for some classic streamlined action this summer? 😍😍
Less than 2 weeks away is our Australia Day Diesels tour from Southern Cross Station to Visit Rochester Victoria, on Sunday 26th of January.

Relax in your comfortable compartment and enjoy the scenery as our pair of classic diesel locomotives power out of Melbourne and through the Bendigo line's historic tunnels and viaducts, with spectacular views such as from atop the 33 metre high Taradale Viaduct opened in 1862. After a short pause at Bendigo we continue on the Echuca Line where the grades ease as our train parallels the course of the Campaspe River, before arriving at Rochester at 12:49pm with ample time for lunch and exploration in the river-side town.

Spend time in Club Cars 'Moorabool' and 'Hobsons Bay' while the train picks up speed for our return to Melbourne, finishing a memorable day out onboard The Vintage Train!

Travel in Excursion Class, First Class, or upgrade to one of our Premium Private Compartments!
Travel in style in one of our 1920's Sleeping Carriages, choosing between an Air-Conditioned or opening window car.
With the compartment in day configuration, it will comfortably seat 1 - 3 passengers for a more intimate heritage train travel experience.

Good morning from Newport Workshops.

Today, Steamrail is transferring T395 to our friends at the Victorian Goldfields Railway to assist with their operations over the summer period. Joining the consist is the former V/Line carriage BZN256, which is heading for its new home and a few other vehicles are hitching a ride as well. S301, which was kindly donated by Pacific National to Steamrail in early 2024, is leading today's transfer train in both directions, its first mainline operation leading a consist in some years.

History at Bairnsdale!

History was made today when R711 arrived into Bairnsdale for the first time ever.

It is also the first time two R class locomotives have been at Bairnsdale with R761 having run down the night before with the service vehicles.

R class locomotives previously could only travel as far as Sale due to the now replaced railway bridge over the Avon River at Stratford.

R761 will haul the day train back to Melbourne departing Bairnsdale at 1555 whilst R711 will haul the service vehicles back later tonight.
