2024 has been a great year at Perth Birds and Bush! Thankyou to everyone who booked tours. You are all such lovely people who love nature and have had interesting lives! Together we have seen lots of different birds and flowers and enjoyed the scenery in and around Perth. Lots of you have mentioned that the tours give you a better picture of Perth as we drive through suburbs from one nature reserve to another.
A big step in 2024 was that Perth Birds and Bush signed on to the Tourism Emissions Reduction Program to improve the future of our birds and wildflowers! This program is aimed at reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from tourism businesses and increasing the sustainability of Australian tourism! Interested in what we’re doing to reduce emissions? Thanks ! It was nice to come home to this certificate after my 8 week holiday! I have enjoyed submitting surveys to Birdata since February 1999. After 25 years I have submitted over 2500 bird surveys. It's brilliant to know that my birdwatching is contributing to bird conservation.

But looking at my map of survey sites, I definitely need to explore the of Australia much more! Maybe I need another holiday!

Tawny Frogmouths are an Australian endemic species. They sleep during the day usually in fork of a tree or the start of a tree branch and are usually hard to see as their feathers comouflage well with the bark. They wake up at dusk to hunt for their prey.

Australasian Swamphen are found in Australia, New Zealand, several pacific islands, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. They were once thought to be a subspecies of Purple Swamphen and many older bird books will show this name. In the southern parts of Western Australia the subspecies bellus is found which has the characteristically bright pale blue cheeks and centre chest. Do you think this subspecies will ever be split off as a separate species?

This group of endangered Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo were certainly enjoying a free feed and water! Its wonderful to see caring organisations providing water for this endangered species that are declining 10 to 15% per year! It's especially needed in the terribly dry six months that we have had here in Perth.
