What to see in the Sky in August? 🌌

7 August
Saturn is at opposition, the brightest of the year bright, visible from 10pm onwards rising on the Eastern horizon, excellent visibility throughout the night. We’ll have to wait a couple of months to see it in our stargazing tours.

12 August
Perseid Meteor Shower: spectacular in the Northern hemisphere with more than 100 shooting stars per hour, on the Australian East coast we will not see as many shooting stars since the Constellation Perseus is below the horizon - but likely more shooting stars than the usual 0-5 per tour. The Perseids peak in the second part of the night after midnight. Browse the sci-fi Netflix section and watch them all to keep yourself awake.

15 August
Full Moon
Mars and Jupiter are only a finger-width apart in the night sky from 3am

19 August
Mercury: Greatest elongation, best time to see it after sunset away from the Sun in the first 30 minutes past sunset

24 August
Mars: Becoming more visible in the early morning hours.

Whole month:

Milky Way: this is the most spectacular month of the year with the core of the Milky Way at is highest point, visible 1 hour after sunset and looking at us straight in the eye. Our wonderful home galaxy is reaching from one point of the horizon to the other. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy so, why do we see it as a straight line? (we’ll let you figure this one out ;) ).

If you have not yet seen the Milky Way, *this* is the month.

Planets: Mercury and Venus make a come back and are visible above the Sun right after sunset. Saturn is visible in the middle of the night. Mars and Jupiter visible from 3am on and dancing a tango together.

Visible zodiac constellations: Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius

TOMORROW SPOTS AVAILABLE - DONT MISS TUESDAY 30/07 with clear forecast 📆

2 meteor showers happening on the same night 💫

The southern Delta-Aquariid & the Alpha-Capricornid meteor showers will come to cross the sky with shooting stars tomorrow - Tuesday July 30.

The combined zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of the meteor shower (we think of it as the percentage of awesomeness) will be around 30 this more as an opportunity to see more shooting stars than the usual 1-5 per tour, rather than a full blown meteor shower (like the December Geminids with a ZRH of 150).

That night comes with two perks:
- a near new Moon to see shooting stars best
- the Milky Way close to its highest altitude for best visibility of the year!

Why not join the magic of our usual Milky Way stargazing tours with fingers crossed a little bit of shooting star dust agrementing your night.

Come join us with your friends and family, you’re welcome to use your voucher too.

We have spots available at 8:30pm 🎟️

DISCLAIMER: as much as we are trying to make our stargazing tours match wonderful celestial events, we cannot guarantee the quality of any celestial event beyond the magic of our regular stargazing tours which
include laser-guided naked-eye astronomy, constellation storytelling, telescope and binocular viewing and Q&A with an astronomer — and of course complimentary souvenir photo! Ultimately shooting stars are rocks falling from the sky and we have no control over that. Think of it as a possible cosmic bonus on the house!

What to see in the Sky in July?

21 July: Full Moon
30 July: Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower peak (25 meteors/h), alpha-Capricornids meteor shower peak (5 meteors/h)

2 Meteors Showers on the same day? Yes but...
With the peaks of both the Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower and of the Alpha-Capricornids meteor shower falling on July 30, you might expect that the sky that night is going to be on fire! While you may see slightly more shooting stars than usual on that night, the critereon to know what’s a good meteor shower is the number of meteors per hour, also lovingly called the Zenithal Hourly Rate (ZHR). The cumulated ZHR of both meteor showers on that night comes down to 30, but we get excited when the ZHR is actually above 70-80. which happens about 3 times per year. The biggest meteor shower of the year, the Geminids (December 13-14), has a ZHR of 150!

Whole month:

Now that the winter solstice has passed, the days are getting longer and the sun sets later.

July is the best month to see the Milky Way in all its glory at sunset around 6pm AEST with Sagittarius A*, the supermassive blackhole at the core of the Milky Way, high in the sky from sunset on. Another bright area of our Milky Way is the Carina nebula, just right of the Southern Cross in the Sky.

The Southern Cross is at about its highest point in the sky at moment and will be very easy to spot with its four (actually five!) bright stars above the south celestial pole.

Visible zodiac constellations: Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricornus

Just wrapped up an incredible week at the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) in Melbourne / Naarm.

We kicked off with our first ATE Media meeting journalists and media, then meeting with buyers from all around the world all week, catching up with our existing industry partners and creating new connections. Thank you for the insights, fantastic conversations and the laughs — and an astronomical amount of Tassie manuka ginger tea fueling us!

Grateful for the post ATE famil opportunities to showcase our beautiful South Coast skies to groups from China, UK, EU in Jervis Bay, Narooma with Sally Bouckley and Aunty Sharon, and Shoalhaven Heads we had a wonderful time hosting the famil groups 💫

Dimitri and I are now voiceless but freaking excited about the stellar connections we made and new partnerships, and cannot wait to welcome more international stargazers to the South Coast! ✨

What do we do when the biggest magnetic storm on 20 years happens, triggering spectacular Auroras all over the world, and it won’t stop raining in the Blue Mountains and Jervis Bay?

An impromptu Aurora hunting road trip with the stargazing crew to… the dark skies of PARKES!

It was well worth the 4h40 trip, we witnessed the most breathtaking Milky way display we ever encountered in our lives, viewed the Centaurus A galaxy through our telescope, the impressive Sombrero galaxy that is some 31 000 000 light years away, drank the most delicious Pakistani chai keeping us warm through the 3am dew.

Although the Aurora Australis wasn’t as intensely dazzling as our Insta feeds, we definitely saw some greenish shimmers on the horizon. Thank you Tom for capturing the auroral activity down near the horizon and the majestic Milky Way! 🥹🤩
We (Caroline and Dimitri) are trying our luck at the Dark Sky Park Coonabarabran and Warrumbungles tonight 🤞

What’s in the Sky in May? 🌌✨

1st - 31st:
The “Devil’s Comet” (12P/Pons-Brooks) graces the Western horizon from sunset until 6:30 PM, visible with a telescope.

4th - 6th May:
Experience the peak of the Eta Aquariids Meteor Shower (medium-major) with 20-60 shooting stars per hour and a favourable Moon. Join our special event on Sunday, May 5th.

18th - 28th May:
Moon window. Avoid if you want to see the Milky Way.

23rd May:
Full Moon 🌕

Throughout the month:

A comet, a spectacular meteor shower, and the magnificent Milky Way adorn the May sky!

The Devil’s Comet:
Witness the elusive “Devil’s Comet” (affectionately known as 12P/Pons-Brooks by astronomers) visible at sunset. Although challenging to spot with the naked eye, it can be observed with binoculars early in the month and later with a telescope. Check our website for tour details ensuring optimal viewing opportunities.

Eta Aquariids Meteor Shower:
Don’t miss one of the top 3 meteor showers of the year, the Eta Aquariids. Shooting stars, originating from the constellation Aquarius, peak around 1 am, offering a celestial spectacle. These meteors are remnants from a past journey of Halley’s Comet near Earth’s orbit, known as “meteoroids”.

Milky Way Season:
As the Milky Way leans on its side, its core in Sagittarius becomes visible a few hours after sunset. Look out for the Emu in the Sky, near the Southern Cross, a celestial wonder rich in Aboriginal astronomical lore. Witness the majestic descent of Orion in the East, its belt stars stacked atop one another just above the horizon.

Visible Zodiac Constellations:
Gemini ♊️, Cancer ♋️, Leo ♌️, Virgo ♍️, Libra ♎️, Scorpius ♏️

What’s in the Sky in April? 🌌✨

09/04: New Moon (the Moon is invisible, good time to see the Milky Way)

22/04: Lyrids meteor shower (special event stargazing tour in the Blue Mountains )

24/04: Pi-Puppids meteor shower (minor), Full Moon

Throughout the month:

We are graced with two meteor showers this month, the Lyrids (very popular in the Northern hemisphere) and the pi-Puppids. Both of these meteor showers produce less than a dozen shooting stars per hour seen and are considered minor. The Full moon will also greatly affect the pi-Puppids. As we are running our regular public tours during the peak of the Lyrids, you may want to join us and witness the spectacle together!

Two monumental constellations, Leo and Virgo, rise at sunset in the North-East. The Southern Cross is resting horizontally in the mid-altitude sky in the South West.
Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Saturn are visible in the early morning towards the East (although that’s generally too early for astronomers...)

Meanwhile, the Milky Way season is well and truly underway as the Milky Way is starting to lean on its side with its core resting just on the horizon. Orion is gradually sinking lower and lower, presenting a majestic sight as it sets in the East, where the three stars of Orion’s belt are just above the horizon, stacked on top of one another.

Visible zodiac constellations: Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo
