Good news. From Monday 15 June, VicRoads will start running licence tests again.

Couple of points on this:

If your test was cancelled, VicRoads will get in touch to give you first priority to re-book. That's only fair.

We're opening six temporary licensing sites and hiring more than 200 new staff to get through the backlog as quickly as possible.

Once that's cleared, new appointments will be made available.

And we're introducing extra cleaning and hygiene measures to make sure there's minimal risk for everyone involved.

I know this has been frustrating for a lot of people.

For mums and dads, kids who had that special birthday – and anyone who has been working towards their licence and had to face an uncertain wait.

But I just wanted to thank you for your patience while we get everything back up and running – safely.

Driver Testing across NSW has now been postponed for a minimum period of two months. The change comes into effect from Monday, 30 March in response to the latest health advice and risks associated with COVID-19. It applies to all practical driver assessments conducted by Service NSW.

We apologise for any inconvenience and appeal for people to understand this decision was made with the safety of customers and staff front of mind. For more information, visit our website or call us at 13 77 88: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/driver-testing-and-covid-19

26/03/2020

Changes to driving assessments will commence on Friday 27 March as follows:

1. Aged driving assessments conducted by Service NSW will be deferred for a minimum period of three months. Aged test applicants who were due to have a test conducted will have their licence status maintained for the duration.

2. Customers who hold a current overseas licence that have become a permanent resident will now have an additional three-month extension on the timeframe for them to convert to a NSW licence.

3. Driver assessments will be deferred for overseas licence holders except for customers whose overseas licence has recently expired or is expiring within the next two months

Customers who have booked these tests will be contacted by Service NSW to discuss their circumstances to ensure their licence remains active and they can continue to drive.

This service may change to respond to changing conditions. Please call 13 77 88 or visit the Service NSW website for more information: www.service.nsw.gov.au

From 26 September, motorists will no longer need to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 90km/h or more when passing stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Drivers will need to slow down safely and move over to give them as much space as possible. In speed zones of 80km/h or less, motorists will still need to slow down to 40km/h.

The rule will also be expanded to include stationary tow trucks and breakdown assistance vehicles displaying yellow flashing lights.

A vehicle that hits a pedestrian at 50km/h is twice as likely to cause a fatality as the same vehicle travelling at 40km/h.

From 11 August, the 40km/h speed zone in the Sydney CBD will be expanded to include new parts of the CBD, Barangaroo, Dawes Point, Millers Point and Ultimo. Look out for the 40km/h High Pedestrian Activity signs.
