The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum was created under the Decree No. 130 dated March 13, 1967 of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR. From 1967 to 1993, the museum was called the Azerbaijan State Museum of Carpet and Folk Applied Arts, from 1993 to 2014 - State Museum of Carpet and Applied Arts named after Latif Karimov, from 2014 to the present time the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum.

At the time of establishing, it was the only museum that was dedicated to the art of carpet weaving. The main purpose of the creation of the museum was to store, research, and demonstrate unique examples of the carpet weaving art, which are the Azerbaijan’s national heritage.

Today, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, which is located in one of the country’s most modern buildings, not only stores a rich collection of artifacts and carpets (our nation’s most valuable heritage), but also operates as the site for the comprehensive research of traditional carpet weaving art and its popularization within world culture.

The Maiden Tower is a Baku landmark, a much-loved symbol of the city and of Azerbaijan. It looms dark and enigmatic, looking out to sea from the southern edge of Baku´s old, walled city, the Icheri Sheher. The origins of the tower are shrouded in mystery - no-one knows for certain when it was built or what it was built for or even how it acquired its name Maiden Tower (Qiz qalasi). No written sources survive that record its construction or original function.

In Azerbaijan, there are nine national parks scattered throughout the country and characterized by high natural diversity. They are inhabited by hundreds of species of rare representatives of the fauna and flora listed in the Red Book. Unlike nature reserves, which, as a rule, do not allow tourists, National Parks are open to the public. In addition to nature conservation, they serve the purpose of environmental education of the population and the development of ecotourism.

The Shahdagh National Park, formed in 2006 on the expanses of the Greater Caucasus mountain range, includes the territories of the Ismayilli and Pirguli reserves, as well as partly high-alpine forested and meadow territories of the Ismayilli, Guba, Gusar, Gabala, Oghuz and Shamakhi regions. The total area of the park is 130,508.1 hectares. Thus, the Shahdagh National Park can claim to be the largest nature conservation area of Azerbaijan.

Feel like an Eastern ruler in the Palace of Sheki Khans. The Palace, built in 1761-62, as the summer residence of Huseyn Khan Mushtada, is considered to be the top of Azerbaijani medieval architecture. The two-story Palace of Sheki khans was built without a single nail. The secret ingredients of the solution, which was used by the builders, connecting Adobe brick, river stone, beams, columns and boards of sycamore and oak – lost. The imagination of the visitor is shaken by openwork stained glass windows of Venetian glass (5000 pieces of color per square meter!). The peculiarity of the Palace – its paintings from floor to ceiling: battle scenes and hunting, birds of Paradise and flowers, elephants and dragons. The skill of the artists was such that the colors have not lost their brightness even after 250 years. From the garden of Sheki Khan remained two mighty plane trees, which seemed to stand guard over the Palace.

Yanar Bulag (Fire Spring) is nearby Archivan village. It is an unusual spring which fascinatingly combines the two elements, fire and water. The phenomenon starts simply enough. Water comes gurgling from a metal stand-pipe inside a small pavilion, not looking particularly unusual. But when a lighter or another ignition source is touched to the water, the liquid itself will be set ablaze. This unique and entertaining property of the water is due to its uniquely high methane content.

Put a lighter to it and it burns, giving a magical little display of the wet and the warm. Despite the methane in the water, water from the spring is said by locals to have remedial properties. People come from all over the region to collect water from the spring. Similarly, for tourists it has become almost a rite of passage to take a mouthful of the water while the top of the pipe is being set ablaze.

Azerbaijan can claim to be the site of almost half of the world`s mud volcanoes, with estimates putting that figure of 50 percent still at a lowly 400 or so. These are concentrated around the mineral-rich coastline of the Caspian Sea, an arid desert-like place, only accessible by a driver who's willing to get his car muddy.

Gobustan National Park is a place where the mud volcanoes can be walked right up to and where the brave can even bathe in them. The volcanoes gurgle out mud at intermittent intervals, sometimes just a bit of sludge, other times a rumbling belch. Mud volcanoes never grow to the size of regular volcanoes. Most are small, ever-changing landforms, often accompanied by peculiar sculptures formed by the spewed out clumps of clay.

Mud volcanoes are associated with oilfields. Rich oil and gas fields are found in the territories of mud volcanoes. The dry heat leaves dry mud trails caked along the floor, in strange oozing patterns across the dusty ground. Volcanic clay is sometimes used in the treatment of skin conditions, as well as rheumatism and diseases related to the nervous system.

The bloody tragedy - Khojaly Genocide

In February 1992, an unprecedented massacre was committed against the Azerbaijani population in the town of Khojaly. This bloody tragedy, which became known as the Khojaly genocide, involved the extermination or capture of the thousands of Azerbaijanis; the town was razed to the ground.

As a result, 613 persons were killed, including 106 women, 63 children and 70 elderly people. 1,275 inhabitants were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 persons remains unknown to this day. In the course of the tragedy 487 inhabitants of Khojaly were severely maimed, including 76 children not yet of age. 6 families were completely wiped out, 26 children lost both parents, and 130 children one of their parents. Of those who perished, 56 persons were killed with especial cruelty: by burning alive, scalping, beheading, gouging out of eyes, and bayoneting of pregnant women in the abdomen.

The crime should not remained without punishment. Armenian millitary-political agression must be condemned by world community. International organizations, parlaments of the world states must give political-legal appraisal of Khojaly genocide - millitary crime, commited by the Armenian Republic in the Azerbaijan territories.

JANUARY 20TH, 1990 (THE BLOODY JANUARY)

20 January 1990 is a day, which went down in history of the struggle for the freedom and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, as a heroism page. Leading of the battle divisions of the Soviet army aimed against wide mass who got out in the streets and squares of Baku to protest against aggressive actions of Armenia, which was raising territorial claims to our country, against protection rendered to this country by the government of the former USSR had brought to the unprecedented tragedy in Azerbaijan.
On those terrible days valiant sons and daughters of our Motherland, the country's freedom, honor and dignity of whom was above all, sacrificed their own lives and rose to the top of shahid.
As a result of it, we gained our independence many years we had been dreaming of and our country had achieved sovereignty.
In spite of the fact that a few years has passed since those bloody days, our nation remembers that dreadful night and expresses its deep contempt to those who committed that tragedy. Our republic celebrates the day of tragedy of January 20 broadly every year, which had immortalized in the vital memory of our nation as a Day of the Nationwide Sorrow.

The Bibi-Heybat Mosque is a historical mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The original building was built during the thirteenth century by Sharwan Shah Froukhzadeh II. The current building was established during the 1990s, after the Bolsheviks The demolition of the original building in 1936.

This mosque is known locally as the "Mosque of Fatima", and it is rumored that one of the daughters of Imam Musa al-Kadhim is buried in it. Accordingly, the mosque is a shrine to many Shiites and some Sunnis in Baku and Azerbaijan who visit the tomb to pray and pray. The mosque has three domes and two minarets. Its exterior is influenced by the Baha'at of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, with its wide squares, magnificent stones and walls engraved in Arabic script. The two minarets built on bases that were integrated with the building. Although they belonged to the Persian style, they were devoid of the decoration that characterized the Persian minarets.

For the status of this mosque many couples come in Baku to hold their wedding
