National Flag Square marks the western end of Baku Boulevard. Officially opening in 2007, the square is a symbol of national pride. The giant flag measuring 70 by 35 metres (229.7 by 114.9 feet) on a flagpole standing 162 metres (531.5 feet) was once in the Guinness Book Of Records. Tajikistan now holds the record.

“It looked as though an animal was trying to get out of the ground… There was a big explosion, and a huge flame started coming from the hillside… The flame was unbelievably big, about three hundred meters high. It was surrounded by dense, black smoke, and lots of mud was being thrown into the air,” recounted a local. Visible from 15 kilometers (nine miles) away, three days later the flames were still burning.

What had taken place was an eruption, not one of magma, but of mud. Known as “mud volcanoes,” they form in places where pockets of underground gas have found a weak spot in the earth where they can force their way to the surface. Because they are not caused by magma, the mud volcanoes, rather than being hot, can be very cold indeed, often just above freezing. Over a thousand mud volcanoes are known to exist in the world, and some 400 of those are in the coastal area of Azerbaijan 🌋

GETTING AROUND IS EASY IN BAKU

Long straight roads divide Baku into large blocks along the Caspian Sea. Getting around on foot usually involves walking straight and turning either left or right before continuing to go forward. Getting lost is almost impossible. And if you do use public transport, like mentioned above, a single journey on the metro costs AZN0.20 or a whopping 12 cents.

Baku’s promenade, or Baku Boulevard, officially starts at National Flag Square, extending a few kilometres to Freedom Square. But, pass the docks, and a further section heads east towards Baku White City. Strolling along gives views of the city centre, endless swarms of fish in the Caspian Sea as well as an amusement park, cafés, the Baku Eye Ferris Wheel and a shopping mall. Come back after dark and watch the Flame Towers Fairmont Baku perform their magical light show.

Visiting Baku and missing out on one of its 30 museums is like going to Paris and skipping the Tour Eiffel. Head to Icheri Sheher and first visit the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. The 15th century medieval palace was the seat of former rulers. Today, it’s a UNESCO-listed building with a palace, mausoleum, and a museum. Admission is AZN10 ($5.90). Expect to spend two hours.

Next, head to Maiden Tower, the large cylindrical structure on the opposite side of the old town. Inside, there’s a museum and spiral staircase to the top of the 29.5 metre-building (96.8 feet). Admission is AZN10 ($5.90). Or, check out the Baku Museum of Miniature Books, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, or the National Museum of History.

The city of Astara, in the Astara Rayon district of Azerbaijan, is found just across from the border with Astara in neighbouring Iran. Famed for being one of the most beautiful areas of the country, surrounded by forest and mountains, the city of Astara itself has picturesque cafes and local restaurants, as well as a museum. The museum is dedicated to archaeological finds in the region. These include coins and stone work such as statues of human figures and animals that are said to be over 2,000 years old. If you venture just outside of Astara, you will find charming mountain villages that feature ancient mosques, towers, bathhouses and mausoleums 🕌

If you want see burning water then you can’t miss a trip to Yanar Bulag, a curious natural phenomenon that is located on the road between the towns of Astara and Lankaran. The water is pumped out of a pipe and can be set alight due to the levels of natural methane contained within, making the oxymoron of flaming water a reality. Locals in Azerbaijan believe that the water here has healing properties and much of it collected as drinking water to cure a whole host of ills.
