Diri Baba - Juma - Astrological observatory - Lagich village-fields of flowers

First destination point : Diri Baba Mausoleum,

Diri-Baba Mausoleum near Shamakhi.

On the way from Baku to Shamakhi there is Maraza village known for its unique monument - two-storied mausoleum-mosque of the 15th century (1402) called Diri-Baba, located across from the old cemetery.

For a long time the local residents have kept the legend that there imperishable Saint Diri-Baba had been buried. However, many other legends and mystical details are connected with this landmark. Therefore, since the 17th century it attracts pilgrims and simply curious visitors.

The originality of this structure is that the architect "built" the tomb into the rock. The impression is that the tomb is suspended in the air.

The tomb impresses with its severity of architecture, purity of lines on the background of the rough dark rock. The light and smooth surface of its walls looks solemn. It is remarkable that the main floor of this structure is the second one. In front of the main hall there is an ante room covered with an octahedral.

Located on a hill at the heart of Maraza land, it is a natural cathedral and central ceremonial place, kind of artwork and “power place”

Though poorly understood, mud volcanoes are found where subsurface layers of fluidized sediments, like silt and clay, have been pressurized by tectonic activity, such as at the boundaries of the earth's crustal plates, or by the accumulation of hydrocarbon gases.

Volcanic materials ultimately break down and weather to form some of the most fertile soils on Earth, cultivation of which has produced abundant food and fostered civilizations. The internal heat associated with young volcanic systems has been harnessed to produce geothermal energy.

Located 22 kilometres north of Shamakhi’s city centre along a scenic road leading into the Caucasus Mountains, the settlement of Pirqulu is home to the largest astrophysical observatory in the Caucasus. Named after 13th-century astronomer Nasreddin Tusi, the observatory was established in the Soviet era when it was used to great effect to study the stars and secrets of the universe. While it continues to be at the forefront of Azerbaijani astrophysics today, there are also facilities for visitors: you can browse a small museum, admire the largest telescope in the region and even do some stargazing if visiting after dark.

During Novruz, various traditional games and shows such as “Kos-kosa” (symbolizes the coming of spring), “Khidir Ilyas” (the symbol of fertility and blossom) and fortune-telling are held at musical gatherings. Folk singers sing songs while wrestlers test their strength. Novruz is a family holiday.

LAHIC VILLAGE🛖🛖🛖

Here in Lahic, centuries of isolation have honed the skills of the copper smiths which line the narrow streets. The soaring peaks that surround this village make farming nearly impossible, so local people turned very long ago to crafts.

The residents of Lahic are divided into three categories, based on their craftsmanship: Baadvan, Azavarro and Araghird. Each of these categories has its own village square, mosque, hammam and graveyard. One of the most striking features of the urban look of Lahic, is the village square of each category, which, today, still has its specific role in the public life of the village

Azerbaijan does not have many tourist attractions, but what it does have is plenty of quaint little mountain villages.🏔🏔🏔

Copper smithing is only the most famous. Carpet weaving, wood carving and a variety of other such handy crafts await the weary traveller.
