Krasnaya Sloboda is a unique place and is sometimes called the Jerusalem of the Caucasus, this because its inhabitants are primarily Mountain Jews. The town was established by the goodwill of the Khan of Guba, who invited the Jews to find a safe haven just across the river from the city of Guba in 1742. The city flourished and grew to reach 18 000 people in 1917. During the Soviet time, the population decreased due to the soviet harsh regime. Throughout its heyday, the town had 13 functioning synagogues. Today there are two functioning synagogues, the six-dome synagogue built in 1888 and the Hilaki synagogue which was built in 1896.
