Gazi Husrev-beg's bezistanĀ is one of the preservedĀ bezistanĀ inĀ Sarajevo,Ā Bosnia and Herzegovina, from theĀ Ottoman period in the history of the country. Built in 1555 inĀ BaŔčarÅ”ija,Ā bezistanĀ still serves its purpose - trade.

It is rectangular in shape with entrances, which border the 109 m long street in which small shops are located. Gazi Husrev-beg Street (also calledĀ Zlatarska) runs parallel along the bezistan. Dubrovnik craftsmen took part in the construction. Due to the slightly lower temperature achieved by building below the level of the surrounding streets, the original purpose of the bezistan was to trade in groceries. This still makes shopping on warm, summer days enjoyable. With its appearance, Gazi Husrev-beg's bezistan is reminiscent of the Kapali Bazaar and bezistan in Istanbul or souk in the cities to the east.

The City Hall, the most beautiful and lavish building in Sarajevo, was opened on this day exactly 127 years ago - on April 20, 1896.

The project is a master-peace created by architect Alexander Wittek, but final touch was made by Ćiril M. Iveković. It was built in the pseudo-Moorish style. This experimental architectural style was designed by Romantic architects in the spirit of Orientalism, and is characterized by the lavish use of the most beautiful elements of Ottoman art.
The building has brilliantly done facade, while its basic structural elements are pillars, walls, arches and a glazed dome over the hall, the most important part of the luxurious interior.

The City Hall truly symbolizes the spirit of Sarajevo because it depicts the fusion of different cultures and the place where East meets West and serves as a symbol of the meeting of world civilizations.

April 6 is the most significant date in the history of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On April 6, 1945, "by joint efforts and sacrifices of Sarajevo patriots - Serbs, Muslims and Croats", Sarajevo was liberated, and on the same day in 1992, Sarajevo again needed its citizens and patriots to save and liberate it once again.

After the war, Sarajevo was reborn from the ashes and again became a symbol of tolerance, love and mix of different religions and cultures. Considering the importance of this date throughout its history, city authorities declared in 2006 that the Day of the City of Sarajevo will be observed on April 6.

Did you know that Sarajevo had a water supply system long before other European cities? The first water supply system in Sarajevo was built by its founder Isa-beg Ishakovic, as long ago as in year 1461. In comparison, Vienna got its first water system only in 1870.
