Barbados has many beautiful gullies and wooded areas. Cool, tranquil, peaceful, and full of life. Sadly, many choose to pollute them.

Nevertheless, the mystical endures. I hope that these photos encourage you to come and visit them for yourself.

Have you ever seen any of these trees around? They're mainly seen growing in gullies and heavily wooded areas, especially on or in between rocks. They're called Banyan Trees.

A Banyan Tree is a fig that develops accessory trunks from adjacent prop roots, allowing the tree to spread outwards indefinitely. This distinguishes banyans from other trees with a strangler habit that begin life as an epiphyte, i.e. a plant that grows on another plant, when its seed germinates in a crack or crevice of a host tree or edifice.

Our most recent adventure in Cole's Cave, down in the beautiful Jack In The Box Gully it St.Thomas.

This crew had a blast and has vowed to return to venture deeper inside. It's truly a blessing to be able to behold such splendid beauty.

If you are like me who thought that St.Michael didn't have many interesting places to traverse on a hike, then think again. This was the first time I saw this particular gully.

We started from Botanical Gardens. I figured I'd just go along on this hike for the exercise. But to my surprise I got more than I had expected. What a wonderful morning it was.

This morning's hike from Hackleton's Cliff was so so good. Covering a short distance of about 6.5 kilometers, all the twists and turns and ups and downs made it seem longer. And boy was it hot.
Thanks to Philip for an excellent hike.
And the roast Breadfruit lime afterwards....sorry for all who missed out.

What a beautiful day it was down in Jack In The Box Gully in St.Thomas.

This is my second favorite gully in Barbados. Thick vegetation, lovely rock formations, no bears or snakes and it also has a cave...Cole's Cave, which is home to hundreds of bats. It also has streams and pools of water, some clean enough to to take a dip in. Quite the advantage.

Fun fact: Gullies are formed when the roofs of caves collapse.

Join me and come see not only this iconic piece of rock, but also one of our four remaining lighthouses, beautiful wooded areas, springs, lovely coasts and cliffs and lots more.

This is most definitely one of my favorite hiking trails.

Centipedes...friends or foes?
We Bajans have one response to that question, FOES!!!

Magnificent creatures no doubt but they pack a painful sting and that's the most annoying and frightening aspect about them. One time while in my late teens me and a couple of friends found a centipede wrapped around it's infants in a fallen tree. We pushed and poked it with a stick and all it did was wrap its body tighter around its children. I was so surprised that such a creature had such strong maternal instincts.

In Barbadian folklore, whenever one sees or dreams about centipedes, it is a bad omen, unless you or someone has successfully killed the creature.

I have already been stung about fifteen times throughout my lifetime and as far as I'm concerned that is more than enough. And this is precisely why I spray regularly with Sevin.

Yahweh is the Almighty Creator and I thank Him firstly for all that I see, smell, hear, taste and touch while hiking. I stand in awe at His power and wisdom which is clearly and undeniably manifested in His creations.
I truly hope and pray that others acknowledge this and join me as I worship our glorious loving and life giving God.

Project HARP (High Altitude Research Project) was a joint initiative between the United States and Canada to research the use of ballistics to deliver objects into the upper atmosphere and beyond.

Designed by ballistics engineer, Canadian Gerald Vincent Bull, March 9, 1928 – March 22, 1990, he was assassinated

Project Babylon was a space gun project commissioned by then Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. It involved building a series of "superguns". The design was based on research from the HARP Project.

The 16-inch HARP gun at Barbados held the record for the largest gun in the world with a barrel length of 119 ft and weighing 200 tons. It consisted of two 16-inch U.S. Navy gun barrels welded together and smooth-bored to 16.4-inch diameter. It was capable of firing at a muzzle velocity of (7,100 ft/s). It launched an 181-kg shot with an 84-kg payload that could reach an altitude of 181 km. Some say 179 km and that that is the record for any fired projectile.
(100 km Karman line start of space).

In 1962, Bull and Mordell established a McGill University research station on the Caribbean island of Barbados as HARP's main base of operations for its 16-inch super gun.The site location was first suggested by Mordell, who believed that a launch site closer to the equator would allow the projectile to procure extra velocity from the earth's rotation to reach higher altitudes. In addition, the site's close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean made for the safe impact of re-entry projectiles.[1][3] As a result of McGill University's close connections with the island's Democratic Labour Party, Bull was able to meet with the Barbados Prime Minister Errol Barrow to arrange the construction of a firing site at Foul Bay, St. Philip. HARP reportedly received enthusiastic support from the Barbados government due to expectations that the island nation would become heavily involved in space exploration research.
The gun had to be moved along a temporary track. Setting up of it created hundreds of jobs.
The first test shot from the 16-inch gun on Barbados was fired on January 20, 1963 and lastly sometime in 1966

The events of Project Babylon are dramatized in the 1994 movie Doomsday Gun. The novels Splinter Cell, The Fist of God & Nature of the Beast also revolve around the story of Gerald Bull and Project Babylon.

Known as the Grass Canary to us here in Barbados, this beautiful tiny bird was once wildly seen around the Island. But because people would rather keep them in cages while trying to make a financial profit from them, their numbers had dwindled expeditiously. Recently they had been making a comeback but unfortunately people still continue to hinder this by keeping them in captivity.

Up north, it's always windy up here along the cliff face aka palisades.

You feel like you can fly or that you've died and gotten your prize, oh what a wonderful feeling it is to be alive.

This part of St.Lucy is absolutely beautiful. What more can I say? As Morpheus told Neo in the Matrix, you have to see it for yourself.

Enough said, drop mic, exit stage left.
