Barbados rum has been around a very long time - in fact Barbados is credited with the invention of rum! In this Barbados rum blog we’ll be taking a look at Barbados plantation rum, the island’s rum distilleries, including Mount Gay Rum Barbados, some famously wonderful cocktails, including a Barbados rum punch recipe and many more Barbados rum highlights. Q. Where not to go in Barbados
A. Barbados is an incredibly safe island and you can visit any places that you wish. We find that tourists are welcomed by most of the local community, as long as their behaviour is respectful. It is safe to enjoy local areas in Barbados and to get off the beaten track. However, it’s always a good idea to enlist a local guide if you do want to leave the tourist crowds behind. This ensures you have a good time and gives back to the local communities you wish to visit.
You may also prefer not to include certain activities in your perfect vacation - we recommend talking to us so we can help you create the best itinerary for you!

Q. How many parishes in Barbados?

A. The island of Barbados is split into 11 parishes. From north to south the parishes are; St. Lucy, St. Peter, St. Andrew, St. James, St. Joseph, St. Thomas, St. John, St. George, St. Michael, St. Philip and ChristChurch. Each parish has its own charms, accent and scenery and an island tour is the best way to visit them all. The parishes on the west and south of the island have the most swimmable white sand beaches, whereas the parishes of the north and east have rugged scenery. The interior parishes are host to tropical forests and the island’s spectacular gardens.

A. You’ll find surfing on this small Caribbean island all year round. The most famous of the Barbados surf spots is Soup Bowl Barbados, found on the east coast, Soup Bowl is the highlight of Bathseba Barbados surfing. Below are a few of our favourite Barbados surf spots:

Q. What to do in St Lawrence Gap Barbados

A. St Lawrence Gap Barbados is famous for its lively nightlife and ocean front restaurants, as well as some of the most energetic beaches on the south coast. St Lawrence Gap, known locally as ‘The Gap’, is a long one way street lined with bars and restaurants, which enjoys a busy carnival like atmosphere most nights of the week. During the day the Gap has a more sleepy vibe and provides enjoyable walks to and from the beautiful beaches of the area.

A. Barbados is a safe island that’s easy to get around and we recommend renting a vehicle to make the most out of your time on holiday in Barbados. If you don’t want to drive, we can help you organise a personal taxi service to take you everywhere you want to go. We love a half or full day island tour to enjoy lots of great places to visit in Barbados. On your Barbados holiday we recommend visiting rum distilleries, tropical gardens and gully walks, historical tours, local rum shops, beautiful vantage points, the Wildlife Reserve, Harrison’s Cave and Animal Flower Cave.

Q. Where is the airport in Barbados?

A. Grantley Adams International Airport is located in the Parish of Christchurch, Barbados, on the south of the island. It is easily accessible via the main highway and connects via road to all areas of the island. It takes about 10 - 15 minutes to drive to St. Lawrence Gap and Oistins on the south, around 30 minutes to drive to Holetown on the west and around 40 - 45 minutes to reach Mullins and Port St. Charles towards the north west of the island. You can expect to be on the east coast within around 30 minutes of leaving the airport, depending on where you are staying.

Q. Where are the best beaches in Barbados?

A. With over 70 miles of fine coral stone beaches in Barbados to choose from, we often get asked where are the best beaches in Barbados - our answer? It depends what you want from your beach trip! On the west and south coast of Barbados you will find quintessential Caribbean white sand beaches with turquoise waters which are mostly safe for swimming and snorkelling (check the flags). The south coast beaches tend to be busier and we recommend heading all the way up to St. Peter for quieter stretches of sand. On the east coast you’ll find dramatic scenery, rock pools to lounge in and the best surf. On the north of the island the drama continues but this coast is not great for swimmers.

Q. How many beaches in Barbados?

A. There are over 80 beaches in Barbados. The island has more than 70 miles (110km) of fine coral coastline; you’ll find quintessential white sandy beaches with turquoise water on the south and west coasts of Barbados, dramatic vistas at the north of the island and rock pools and surfing on the east. All beaches in Barbados are public, which means you are welcome to enjoy any beach you like. Be aware that not all beaches have lifeguards and look out for the flags that highlight when it’s not safe to swim.
