The Lonesome Traveler We love Bangladesh and hate prejudice. Life, passion, adventure, bizarre happiness – a cosmos of i What is Bangladesh? The Ganges delta? The flora and fauna?
(5)

The temples, pagodas, mosques and palace ruins? The beaches? It may be that all of this has its place, but you'll find it better, more beautiful, more pompous elsewhere. The majority of the few professional tour operators try to present you highlights in a country in which, strictly speaking, there are none, apart from one fundamental exception – and this in turn is hardly paid any attention! It's

the people, for us the most loving and warmest that this planet has to offer, that make the country worth visiting. People who have often only heard from foreigners but have never seen one and behave accordingly in a “virginal” manner. If you don't get to know them, you may have been to Bangladesh, but you haven't got to know it. Our tours are designed to make a difference and we want you to take something home with you cause
We love Bangladesh and hate prejudices!

Eid al-Fitr "Holiday of Breaking the Fast"
is the earlier of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam (the other being Eid al-Adha). The religious holiday is celebrated by Muslims worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan. It falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar; this does not always fall on the same Gregorian day, as the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities.
The holiday is known under various other names in different languages and countries around the world. The day is also called Lesser Eid, or simply Eid.

Bengali do-it-yourself women

01/04/2022

Bengali do-it-yourself women know the advantage of the building material consisting of water, cow excrement and clay when building houses (which is probably similar to half-timbered construction).
The normal tin hut becomes an oven in summer and if you can't afford a chic, traditional, thick-walled mud house that cools you down in summer, then you're more than welcome to grab in the "s**t".

P.S. Masud, Ostrich, Tern & Lepcha – RIP!
The 4 remaining paddle steamers Masud, Ostrich (both built in 1929) Tern (built in 1935) and Lepcha (built in 1937) were true originals, moving maritime museums, commissioned by the East India Company, built in the shipyards of William Denny and Brothers Ltd. in Dumbarton (Scotland) and Garden Reach in Kolkata (India) when Bangladesh was still British India. “Rocket” got the name, which seems strange today, because of its shape and speed, which at least in those years knew nothing comparable. The steam engines have since been replaced by diesel units, but that’s pretty much it, because almost everything is still in its original condition, including some of the entire furnishings. First class has its own, albeit small, panorama deck.
But now it’s over, at least as far as regular service is concerned. Whether, when and how these legends will appear again is anyone’s guess. According to the BIWTC (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation), all Rockets are retired. RIP!
The 354 km route from Dhaka to Khulna with ten intermediate stations is now operated by the (modern) M.V. Bangali and Modhumati.

The Tanguar Haor Boys, the best boy band from Bangladesh! The band is about to make their international breakthrough! 🤪 Have fun! But, what's a Haor?
A Haor is a wetland. A third of the country in northeast Bangladesh consists of such areas - seasonal lake areas up to a few thousand hectares, but never more than 2 meters deep. Located under the foothills of the Himalayas, these wetlands not only represent a special geographical feature of the country - which here resembles a huge soup bowl - in their entirety they also form an immensely important ecosystem.
This Haor, Tanguar Haor, covers an area of approx. 10,000 hectares of which approx. 3,000 hectares are immediately wetland. The Haor includes 46 villages and is the livelihood for more than 40,000 people. The area has been under nature protection since 1999, when the condition of the Haor was classified as critical due to overuse of natural resources. Nevertheless, plant species such as Indian oak (Barringtonia acutangula), clematis (Clematis cadmia, Crataeva nurvala), sea lily (Euryale ferox), Indian lotus flower and many more are threatened in their existence and are unfortunately becoming increasingly rare.

The third highest mountain in the world, 8,586 m high, half in India, half in Nepal, 140 km as the crow flies from Tetulia: the Kangchenjunga. The only eight-thousander that has three other peaks of more than 8000 m.

Especially in Dhaka:
Bara Katra, Great Caravanserai, was one of two major caravanserais in Dhaka. Katra comes from the Arabic Katara which means colonnade and (as in Persian) caravan sarai or simply sarai. This once palatial building complex from the time of the Mughal dynasty is one of the oldest buildings in Dhaka. Bara Katra was commissioned by a confidante of Mughal Prince Shah Shuja between 1644 and 1646 and was to serve as the residence of Shah Shuja - the 2nd son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and Empress Mumtaz Mahal - in his capacity as Governor of Bengal and Odisha. A side note: the Empress Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to her 14th child and the deeply struck Emperor Shah Jahan began building the Taj Mahal in Agra ...

In 1874 Dhaka was on a prestigious visit: Thomas George Baring, 1st Earl of Northbrook, Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, member of Her Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council, member of the Royal Society (the island in Franz Josef Land in the Arctic Ocean, discovered on August 14, 1880 by the British polar explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith on his fourth polar voyage, was named after him, the Northbrook-Island), member of the House of Lords and Governor General and Viceroy of India, in short: Lord Northbrook. To commemorate this important visit, the upper class of Dhaka donated the city a building appropriate to the event...

Bangladesh in pictures – The Oxford Mission Epiphany Church
A visit to the church is actually a must if it weren’t for the permanently locked gates. Approval from the administration of the Church of Bangladesh (to which the Oxford Mission belongs) is inevitable, but as is the case with Bangladesh, administrations and permits: hardly feasible for mere mortals, believers or visitors. Traditionally, the bishop of the Dhaka/Barishal diocese is ordained here. The spectacular structure is exceptionally well preserved and still offers the same appearance today as on the first sketches from 1903.
About the story: In the early 18th century, Barishal attracted many Christian missionaries, including the Oxford Mission, an Anglican ministry based in England. In 1895 it founded the Brotherhood of Revelation, and in 1902 a sisterhood was founded in Barishal. The mission organization opened a boarding school, a youth hostel, an orphanage, a primary school and a hospital. The work of the sisters was very diverse, including evangelism, medical work and women’s education. More here:

Especially in Dhaka, an imambara from the second half of the Mughal rule: Hussaini Dalan, was built in the second half of the 17th century for the Shiite community and named after Husain ibn Ali. The building was built by Mir Murad under Prince Shah Shuja, the son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Although Shuja was a Sunni Muslim, he also supported Shiite institutions. According to tradition, Mir Murad had a vision of Hussain ibn Ali, which led to the construction of Hussaini Dalan. The construction date (second half of the 17th century) is quite controversial, but Hussaini Dalan in its current form is attributed to Naib Nazim Nusrat Jung, who rebuilt the Imambara in 1823... Especially in Dhaka: The Christian cemetery in Dhaka appears for the first time in documents from the 16th century and is now administered by St. Mary‘s Cathedral (Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Dhaka / Kakrail). The cemetery can be traced back to early European Merchants and their relatives and was initially small, as you can see from the former main gate built in the Moorish style, which now stands deep inside the cemetery. Later, mostly members of the East India Company (EIC), indigo plantation owners and soldiers and employees of the British administrative authorities found their final resting place here. From the middle of the 19th century at the latest, the cemetery fell into disrepair and, due to lack of care, began to run wild. But that didn‘t bother anyone at first, he looked rather romantic in this early state of decay... More here:

Especially in Dhaka: Downstream of the Buriganga (today directly on Sadarghat), on the left bank of the river, an imposing mansion was built in the first half of the 19th century, Aratoon House. It is difficult to imagine the grandeur and elegance of the building complex, given its current state. At the moment, one of Dhaka's largest and most magnificent historical buildings is in danger of imminent decay... More here:
