A LOVE SONG 🥹 In this exact moment I had tears in my eyes! I have been swimming with humpback whales for 8 seasons, and never have I been in the water with a mother, calf and escort with the escort SINGING! 🐋 @oceanzentravel 🫵🏽🙏🏽🤙🏽 For context: he wasn’t singing when we got in the water with them, he was very chilled and so was the mum and calf. It was a bit tough so we were trying to stay together and keep up, and then….The male whale started singing right there!! 🐋Whale song and human language share an unexpected connection! legend hero @captainpaulwatson A new study has found that humpback whale songs follow the same structural patterns as human language, making them easier to learn and pass down through generations. Researchers analyzed eight years of whale recordings from New Caledonia and discovered that whale songs follow Zipfian distribution—a universal linguistic rule where simpler sounds are used more frequently than complex ones. This pattern helps infants in both species quickly learn how to communicate. Like human language, whale song is culturally learned. Humpback whales pick up songs from the whales they spend time with, meaning entire populations will sing the same tune. This scale of learning is extremely rare in the animal kingdom, previously only observed in humans. By applying insights from how human babies learn words—through statistical learning—scientists were able to identify word-like elements in whale songs, revealing striking similarities in how information is structured in both species. However, while human language serves many purposes, whale song is believed to be a reproductive display, sung only by males, likely to attract mates or compete with rivals. These oceanic vocalists continuously evolve their songs, sometimes spreading new melodies across entire populations and even between oceans! I encountered off of Vava’u - I have ALWAYS observed the marine megafauna ethic of never reaching out to touch a clearly friendly and curious creature… This young ‘un, however, decided to turn the tables and reached out with his/her pectoral fin to see just what kind of fleshy white thing I was… The remarkable aspect of this contact was that the (probable 3-5 ton) juvenile humpback had the knowledge, the proprioception, the control to drag his pectoral fin across my chest with such gentleness so that while the contact was clearly intentional — she/he did not move me in the water!! (full disclosure: it was all I could do to NOT sob for the next hour and a half!!)
