We had @khynangardner over at Humpback Headquarters today and he kindly found me this absolutely stunning calf with it's really interesting belly markings. Looks like a Y shape right! Let me know what you think of its markings 🖤 🤍 Nice of him to let me have this breach 😏😏

We arrived to find two sleeping whales and waited about 25 minutes for them to surface. To our surprise, when they came up for air, they became extremely curious about everyone in the water. As we spent more time with them, the male whale split off, began singing, and the other whale swam into shallow waters. Only a few of us were left in the water to witness this incredible display of behavior on the shallow reef.

A cute playful calf, in crystal clear water at sunrise - could you ask for anything more?! I just love how playful the calves are as they return down south, using their mother's milk to build up reserves so they can withstand the frigid Antarctica temperatures 🥶 (and using more than a little bit of that milk energy on playing, jumping and frolicking 🥺🥰)

The gentle loving bond between mother and calf humpbacks really is unmatched in pulling on the heart strings.
So much so, that often people’s first in water experience with them ends in emotionally overwhelming happy tears.
These unique whales really do have a warm and welcoming presence like no other, truly special beings.

Mãhina, the white whale of Vava’u Tonga.
This encounter will forever be the most beautiful, breathtaking, and heart stopping moment I have ever experienced underwater.
Only approximately 1 in 40,000 humpbacks have this rare all white skin condition and never before has one been witnessed yet along photographed in Tonga.
Looking down in the water at Mãhina and her mother resting below, heart pumping so hard I could feel and hear it in my chest, I realised the only chance I had of meeting Mãhina eye to eye, was to do the exact opposite of what I and everyone around me was doing.
The excitement in the atmosphere was electric and we were ecstatic with anticipation. Internally the pressure on myself was building rapidly, my hands shaking, shallow breathing as adrenaline surged through my body. It was an indescribable rush, but it was also the very thing inhibiting us from being able to fully experience this once in a lifetime moment with Mãhina.
Realising this, I drop my camera, calm my nerves, slowly breathed, and come back to my senses. I began to gently engage with Mãhina as I have with many other beautiful curious yet cautious humpback whale calves I have met.
Body calmed, I ever slowly began to roll and spin just beneath the surface, engaging with her in the classic humpback calf version of playfulness. Our Tongan guide nodded in approval.
After a few minutes of the gentle rolling and pausing, this what greets us. Words truly fail to express.
Thank you to everyone who shared this beautiful moment with me in the water, to my captain and guide, to the near by boat who so kindly invited us to join them, and to @mattporteous who saw this moment between myself and Mãhina unfolding and intentionally swam away from us in order to capture this once in a lifetime moment in time. You’re the most selfless person I know brother. Thank you, grateful doesn’t even begin to express.
Mãhina means moon in Tongan, a feminine word of Hawaiian origin
