Vandaag is het 955 jaar geleden dat Willem van Normandië (later bekend als Willem de Veroveraar) landde in de baai van Pevensey (Zuid-Engeland). Pas goed twee weken later vond de Slag bij Hastings plaats. Een gebeurtenis die de rest van de Europese geschiedenis mee zou bepalen: plots werd een leenman van de Franse koning zelf koning van Engeland. Een eeuwenlange rivaliteit tussen beide landen zou het gevolg zijn, met Vlaanderen dat meermaals als slagveld diende.

No ANZAC Remembrance Ceremonies in Belgium this year...

CANCELLATION OF ANZAC DAY 2020 SERVICES

MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND AMBASSADORS

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we regret to inform you that public Anzac Day services in Belgium are cancelled this year.
The Australian and New Zealand Embassies and the local communities in Zonnebeke, Ieper, Messines and Comines-Warneton have not taken this decision lightly. The cancellation is in line with the New Zealand, Australian and Belgian Governments’ policies and social distancing guidance.
The health and safety of all members of the public attending commemorative events is our key priority, along with our obligation to comply with the restrictions imposed by the Belgian Government with regard to mass gatherings and social distancing.
As the public services will not take place, we plan to disseminate public messages of solidarity and commemoration on Anzac Day via social media.
We wish to convey the utmost respect and gratitude we have for all that the communities in Belgium do to honour the memory of the New Zealand and Australian soldiers who served in Belgium during World War One. Your communities are central to Anzac Day and to our commemorative activities in the region.
We are very disappointed that we will not be able to mark Anzac Day in the usual way this year, but look forward to the resumption of Anzac Day commemorations in 2021.
We send our best wishes and solidarity to you and your loved ones in these extraordinary and challenging times.

Belgium and France are going in lockdown because of the Corona virus COVID-19.

As a consequence there will obviously be no private battlefield tours until mid April.

We hope that we will be able to run tours for ANZAC DAY, but as for now we don't know when the lockdown will actually finish.

We hope that everyone stays safe and healthy and are looking forward to touring with you when all is normal again.

Due to the immense spread of the Corona virus (COVID-19) most European countries have gone in lockdown and have closed pubs, bars and restaurants. Battlefield tours are still allowed, as they take place in open air, but obviously we want to keep all our clients healthy and safe. Cancelling your scheduled trip will therefor not result in any costs.

And for those who still would want to go on tour, please notice that only private tours (with no more than 6 people) can take place. We will not risk putting any clients together on the same tour.

Stay healthy and hopefully we'll meet again soon, when the pandemic is over.
