In 1965, the architects designed their new offices at number 31 of avenue de Villegaslaan. They thus closed a row of houses that had been deployed eight years earlier at number 25 with typical bel-étage houses integrating the garage on the ground floor and designed for the growing middle class. In the former offices – now used by the administration of Ganshoren – there is an exhibition about the oeuvre of the architects, ‘Le Modernisme Ludique/Het Speels Modernisme’. For their designs, the architects drew on a rich range of natural materials and often called on artists and a landscape architect.

In 1965 ontwierpen de architecten hun nieuwe kantoren op nummer 31 van de Villegaslaan. Zo sloten ze een huizenrij af die acht jaar eerder was ingezet op nummer 25 met typische bel-etages met integratie van de garage op de benedenverdieping, voor een middenklasse. In de voormalige kantoren, nu een bijgebouw van het gemeentehuis is er een tentoonstelling over het oeuvre van de architecten, ’Het Speels Modernisme’. Voor hun ontwerpen putten de architecten uit een rijk scala aan natuurlijke materialen en vaak deden ze een beroep op kunstenaars en een landschapsarchitect.

Deze rondleiding in het Design Museum Brussels spitst zich toe op het belang van ‘the Plastic Design Collection’, de collectie van belgisch design (‘belgisch design belge’) en brengt een kort bezoek aan de tentoonstelling ‘Zéphir Busine, designer’. De Belgische ontwerpers genieten vandaag net zoals gisteren van een internationale erkenning. De producties van de pioniers van het naoorlogs functionalisme zoals een W***y Van Der Meeren, Jules Wabbes, Christophe Gevers, Jacques Dupuis, Alfred Hendrickx, G-C. Van Rijk…, zijn hot en gezocht, het zijn stukken die vertrouwd zijn geworden of creaties om te (her)ontdekken.

In the early 1970s, W***y Van Der Meeren designed 352 student houses, in the heart of the campus of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Ixelles. In his own unique and inventive way, Van Der Meeren used a modular construction system in prefabricated concrete to create a high-quality, pleasant living environment where several generations of students experienced a memorable time. Today, the former student residences are part of the VUB’s architectural heritage, but they also pose important challenges in terms of energy and sustainability. In recent years, two projects were initiated to respond to these challenges: the Circular Retrofit Lab and the WVDM Living Lab. Both projects combined scientific research with practical questions. During the tour, both projects will be explained in detail and situated within the broader story of the history and future of the former student houses.

In 2016, the parish of Scheut came to a close, and this is when the very first teenagers’ school saw the light of day in the former St. Vincent’s church. OSK-AR architects made the plans and opted for a combination of renovation, repurposing, and new build. The former nave is now home to a sports and multipurpose room. The open space under the church has been transformed into a teenage platform with music box and recording studio, class kitchen and workshops. The new building nestles in a U-shape around the church building, thus forming an outdoor play area.

The former Crédit Communal/Gemeentekrediet building with the adjacent Passage 44 is constructed on a pedestal with parking lot, the “Mediathèque” (until 2013), shopping gallery, and auditorium. It accommodates an intimate courtyard designed by René Pechère. The sculptural concrete wall is designed by Pierre Culot, the monumental work of art is by Jacques Moeschal. A2o and WIT will breathe new life into the pedestal with Campus 44, the new home to KULeuven in Brussels.

NATIONAL BANK OF BELGIUM – COUNTER HALL AND PRINTING OFFICE

Following the development of the North-South junction, the National Bank of Belgium committed itself to building its new offices on boulevard de Berlaimontlaan. Designed by architect Marcel Van Goethem, the Counter Hall and the opposite industrial Printing Office were connected through their basements. The monumental Counter Hall with its slightly arched glass ceiling stands in sharp contrast to the austere façade. The Printing Office was sold and will in the future have a mixed function as living, working and relaxing accommodations. Pending the renovation, the Brussels organisation Pali Pali is given the keys to the building.

This postmodernist school built in 1989 with a remarkable porch on the corner, perfectly integrates into the architectural context of Saint Gillis and is representative of the architecture trend of the late 1980s. The large hall surprises by its monumentality, spatial discoveries, changing light, colour and texture, from the crossroads to the heart of the building. It is striking how this committed architecture is fully at the service of the user of the building.
