Did you know that today is Endangered Species Day?
This important day was created as a way to remind us of how fragile the existence of some animals, plants and insects is, and to encourage us to learn about why it is so important to protect these species.
Today, we’re shining a spotlight on some of our beloved endangered African species…
💚 Wild Dog
The wild dog is one of the world’s most endangered mammals. Major threats to the survival of wild dogs include accidental and targeted killings by humans, viral diseases like rabies and distemper, habitat loss and competition with larger predators like lions.
💚 Cheetah
Cheetahs once occupied a much larger territory than they do now. They could be found across the Arabian Peninsula and into central India, as well as in a much larger number of African countries, including Tunisia, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Today, due to human settlement and agricultural expansion, cheetah habitat is just 10% of what it used to be.
💚 Lion
With around 23 000 African lions left in the wild, they're now officially classified as 'vulnerable'. The main threats to African lions are human-wildlife conflict and natural prey decline, as well as habitat loss, climate change and wildlife trade.
💚 Chimpanzee
All chimps are listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The main threats to chimpanzees are habitat loss, disease, and hunting, especially for bushmeat. These are exacerbated by chimps' slow reproductive rate - if an adult is killed, it takes 14 - 15 years to replace him or her as a breeding individual.
💚 Black Rhino
The population of black rhinos declined dramatically in the 20th century at the hands of European hunters and settlers. Between 1960 and 1995, black rhino numbers dropped by a sobering 98%, to less than 2 500 individuals. Thanks to persistent conservation efforts across Africa, black rhino numbers have doubled from their historic low 20 years ago to more than 6 000

Last but certainly not least in our roundup of the top 5 private reserves in Africa is the spectacular Grumeti Game Reserve in Tanzania.
Serengeti national park. is probably one of the most famous national parks in Africa, but did you know that there’s a way to experience all its beauty away from the hustle and bustle of other tourists?
A private conservatory within the greater Serengeti ecosystem, this remote and beautiful corner of the Serengeti was created by the Tanzanian government to protect the annual wildebeest migration route – so you can expect to see plenty of them! There are also up to 60 individual lions roaming the reserve.
The remoteness makes for spectacular undisturbed game viewing, with a limited number of guests permitted at once.
Making the experience even more exclusive is the fact that the reserve is home only to the exquisite Singita Serengeti House and andBeyond Travel Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge.
Our favourite place to stay while there? Singita Serengeti House

We're heading to Kenya 🇰🇪 for our next bucket-list private reserve...
Lolldaiga Hills is a 20 000 hectare livestock ranch and wildlife conservancy is ideally located at the foot of Mount Kenya.
In contrast to the Maasai Mara (or ‘Mass Mara’, as we like to call it), Lolldaiga offers a quieter, more exclusive way to immerse yourself in Kenya’s famous natural splendour.
You can expect to spot elephant, buffalo, lion, hyena, jackal, zebra (including the endangered Grevy’s zebra), vervet monkeys, baboons, and multiple species of game within its rolling hills, cedar forests, open grasslands, and wooded valleys.
Although the more elusive leopard, cheetah and wild dog are harder to find, they are around for sightings by lucky guests.
The Lolldaiga Hills Research Programme aims to conserve the wildlife that call the spectacular reserve home, and the team supports education and enterprise within the local community.
Stay in luxury and enjoy nature at its finest while making a difference to people and planet? You can certainly sign us up for that!
Our favourite place to stay while there? The Safari Series, with the incredible hosts Ed, Moon, and little Romelie pictured here.
