Once again Belgium became the battlefield of Europe during the Great War or World War I. In particular one area of Belgium, the western corner of Flanders, better known now as 'Flanders Fields', was scarred by craters and trenches, poisoned by gas, shells, ammunition and human remains.
What is there still to visit on the former World War 1 battlefields in
Flanders Fields? Plenty, the First World War is everywhere in the area around Ypres; many cemeteries and memorials but also remnants of the actual battles and battlefields. In the Ypres Salient, one of the most dangerous and deadliest parts of the Great War frontline, you can easily spend a few days and visit trenches, craters, bunkers etc.
One of these battlefield sites in the Ypres Salient is Hill 60. It's a unique site because it’s one of the few sites where they left the scars of the war, the moon landscape as it was and didn't restore the land as a memorial for the many that died here. It was also a hotspot for the underground war, an important aspect of World War 1 that is often forgotten.
