The town itself is situated by the river Glazane at the north-east of the Pirin mountain range, right below the highest and most beautiful part of the mountains. Just 160 kilometers away from Sofia, Bansko has developed into a favourite ski and snowboard destination, thanks to the excellent ski facilities combined with the unique architecture and history. The town of Bansko is located 925m above sea level, and its ski area is at 2000-2600m. The Pirin mountain range has a predominantly Alpine character and highest peak in the area is Vihren at 2914 m. Both resort and mountain have a lot to offer, with excellent snow conditions and snow cover from December until May. The area has wide, tree-lined slopes covering the three nearby areas of Shiligarnika, Chalin Valog and Banderishka Poliana. Snow canons also cover most slopes ensuring coverage, the pistes are well maintained and cater for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. There is also plenty of off-piste available as well as a good terrain park with kickers, rails and half pipe. The unique combination of a well developed mountain resort and a historical town makes Bansko a great place for your apres ski. Virtually every house has its own story to tell, offering an insight into the Bulgarian traditions. The traditional Bansko taverns (called "Mehana"), with their charm and style offer local atmosphere with their cuisine and a good selection of Bulgarian wines. There are plenty of cafes, bars and night-clubs, usually open until the early hours. Bansko is a town of international significance, with an array of cultural and historical monuments to explore. Remnants of ancient fortresses in Staroto Gradishte are only 4km away to the west, and to the south is Pirin National Park, a UNESCO heritage site for cultural and natural sightseeing. The park is rich with lakes, waterfalls, caves, venerable trees and historical sites. Bansko is also ideal for summer activities such as golf, mountain biking, trekking, quad biking, horseback riding and even a rehabilitation park for dancing bears!
