Right before the high Jewish holiday of Sukkot, we want to share with you a different story about the Holocaust and the Jewish life before, during and after. Plovdiv, the second biggest city in Bulgaria and the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, was named as the Jewish capital of Eastern Bulgaria. A seven thousand strong Sephardic Jewish community was blooming with numerous activities and dreams. During WWII when Bulgaria was part of the Axis the whole society with all of its segments stood up against the Anti-Jewish legislation and heroically saved the Bulgarian Jewish citizens. In 1998, the Jewish community of Plovdiv installed a monument of gratitude to commemorate and celebrate the heroic action led by the Orthodox church, politicians, community leaders, lawyers, doctors, poets, musicians, workers and many others.

"Saint Marina" is one of the most elegant and impressive churches in Plovdiv. Only very few know that the ceiling of the colonnade is a colorful illustration of the Old Testament/The Hebrew Bible - from the original sin up to the reign of king Salomon. Could you recognize the scenes from the Holy Scripture? :) Waiting for your guesses!

Happy Saint George's Day!
This day is dedicated to the spring verdure, to the Bulgarian Armed Forces and to their bravery. It's also a day for a delicious family meal and for enjoying the colors and scents of the month of May.
It is worth mentioning that despite its apparent religious origin, this day is celebrated by all religious and ethnic communities in Bulgaria, sometimes under another name and having other religious connotations.
Thus, Saint George's Day is above all a celebration of life and joy!

Today, we celebrate the International Mother Earth Day! Every city should be proud of its parks and gardens especially if it has a long and rich tradition in preserving and developing them. Plovdiv is a great example. The Dondukov Garden is the first city park established in the year 1878. The Dondukov garden and its rich history is a point of interest of some of our walking tours and projects!

Yesterday on the 12th of April, we celebrated the “International Day of Human Space Flight”, which commemorates the first human space flight by the soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. On our Socialist Tour of Plovdiv, you will hear about the fascinating involvement of Bulgaria and Plovdiv in the Space Race during the Cold War. Just to let you know….Plovdiv even has a neighborhood named after Yuri Gagarin! How cool is that?
