Bulgarian narrow gauge train ❤️

Nestled between towering mountains and endless green valleys, the Bulgarian narrow-gauge train winds through some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes. But this isn’t just any train ride—it’s a one-of-a-kind experience. As the only narrow-gauge railway in Bulgaria, it offers a rare glimpse into the country’s past, traveling at a leisurely pace through hidden villages and scenic routes inaccessible by car. I really love hiking, and my husband calls me a mountain goat (though I promise I'm not!). Personally for me there are three highlights on every hike: reaching the peak, getting to the hut (because we love those overnight stays), and, of course, breakfast the next morning. After all, there’s no better reward than enjoying a well-earned breakfast with a fabulous view.

And one more precious point btw - digital detoxication, as far as in many huts in Bulgaria there´s no or veeeery bad connection.

As summer in Bansko is slowly coming to the end, the skies feel a little emptier. The storks, who graced us with their presence all summer, have mostly flown south, leaving behind only a few. Their familiar nests, now quiet, remind us of the warmth and life they bring here. In just a few days even the last of them will be gone, and we’ll have to wait until spring to see their graceful return. Until then, we go through the memories of their time here, already looking forward to when the skies will be filled with their wings once more.

Bulgaria: A Hidden Hiking Paradise

Bulgaria is a true gem for hiking enthusiasts, offering some of the most stunning and diverse landscapes in Europe.

Do you know that there are 37 distinct mountains in Bulgaria, 36 of them are in the south grouped in several mountain chains, and one - the Balkan - divided the country in southern and northern parts.

On the photos - our latest hike 2 days long in Pirin National Park, 41 km distance, hiking from Vihren hut to Spano Pole shelter (from ca.1950 meter, over 2500 meter, and back to 2040 meter). Overnight in shelter and next day from Spano pole over 2540 meter to Demyanitsa hut on ca. 1970 meters.

BUT whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, Bulgaria offers trails for all levels of fitness. Well-marked paths and guided tours ensure everyone can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of this country 💪

And what is the last part, you know? - Few hours in mineral hot springs. Fabulous combination ☺️

The "Three" Capitals

Bulgaria is a country with a long history from 631 AD. In this long period of almost 1400 years the country had several capitals, and in this trip, you visit three the most important capitals of this fascinating country.

You will visit Sofia with the mighty buildings and Cathedrals, Plovdiv with its ancient old centre and Amphitheatres and of course Veliko Tarnovo with its 5000 years old history, proved by Thracian remaining on the hill of Tsarevets. A Carpet Factory Just a short 10-15 minute drive from Velingrad, there’s an unassuming building that you might pass without a second glance. Modest in size, with a simple fence around it, it doesn’t stand out at first. Yet, as you approach, a friendly dog might greet you by the gate, a hint that something special lies within. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself in a world of surprises. This is a carpet factory—but not just any factory. While they once produced carpets on a mass scale, since 1990, they’ve dedicated themselves to crafting custom-made pieces. Their clients now include some of the most prestigious names, even the Royal Household in the UK. For me, this little factory is a perfect symbol of Bulgaria—a hidden gem, full of secrets waiting to be discovered. If you haven’t traveled here, seen these places, and experienced the warm surprises that Bulgaria has to offer, you’d never truly know what lies beneath the surface.
