Engenho dos Erasmos, Santos

Hardly known to the people in Santos exist the ruins of one of the first three sugar mills built in Brazil, in the year 1534 in Santos. Founded by Martim Afonso de Sousa he named it "Engenho do Senhor Governador".

In 1540, when Martim Afonso de Sousa went to India, it was renamed to "Engenho São Jorge dos Erasmos" by the buyers, Erasmos Schetz of Antwerps and his sons.

Since 1958 it is hold by the University of Sao Paulo, preserving the place and making researches. It is open to visitors.

Not only in Amazonia, but also especially along the coast there are some indigenous villages which may be visited. But you need to have the permission by the people or FUNAI.

Yesterday I took some brazilians and germans to a village still situated in the muncipal area of Sao Paulo where we learned a lot about the culture of the guarani tribe, about their life and how they learn to be more and more independant of the whites, stronger to defend their rights.

Paraty (Parati) is a charming colonial city in Rio de Janeiro state. Here began the gold and diamond trail to the inner of Brazil. After the construction of the railway between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo the city of Paraty was forgotten and "slept" many years. Only when the road from Rio to Santos was built in the 1970s Paraty was discovered again.
It has many international events every year, especially one of literature.

A visit is really worthwhile.
