๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฒ This moth In the Bahamas is locally known as a money bat, the legend is that if a money bat lands on you, you will come into money. Don't harm it or you are in for years of bad luck! You will find these everywhere. Inside the house, outside the house, day and night, they are as much a part of life on the Out Islands as land crabs and mosquitoes. These moths are treated as a welcome guest. In fact I had one in my house last week and left him alone hoping he would land on me. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฒ

In Texas this moth is known as a Witch Bat and means you are going to win the lottery.

๐Ÿฆˆ NURSE SHARKS CAN "WALK" ACROSS THE OCEAN FLOOR.

Wild nurse sharks are usually found in shallow, coastal waters. The fish are nocturnal predators who tend to hunt within 65 feet of the oceanโ€™s surface (although adults sometimes rest in deeper waters during the daylight hours). They spend their lives around coral reefs and coastal shelves, and most of their hunting takes place right on the ocean floor, where these slow-moving carnivores look for prey in or near the sand. Instead of swimming, they sometimes use their pectoral fins to โ€œwalkโ€ across the bottom.

Piping Plovers: The Story of a Bahamian Bird
Piping plovers nest on the ground in open areas right on the sand, which regularly subjects them to high temperatures. Because of these high temperatures, piping plovers (along with other ground-nesting bird species) have specific strategies and behaviors for thermal regulation of their nests and themselves. This video provides information about this endangered species in the Bahamas.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ Fun ways to speak Bahamaian: Go double with your use of adjectives. This is one fun characteristic of the language thatโ€™s common of the Bahamian dialect.
Instead of using โ€˜veryโ€™ or โ€˜extremelyโ€™, they will repeat the adjective twice. โ€˜She is pretty-prettyโ€™ or โ€˜itโ€™s cheap-cheapโ€™ are two fun examples. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ .

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ“ The Rocky Shores of the Bahamas. This video is not only educational, covering the eco system of the Bahamas, but it is lots of fun! THE ROCKY SEASHORE Many shores in The Bahamas are made of limestone rock that has worn away to form ridges and crevices. They form an ideal habitat for various marine plants (algae) and creatures. The ridges and crevices protect from the waves and provides a safe haven for creatures to hide from predators.๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ“

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ˜ There are certain days that stand out in our memories and become special to us. For some, it might be a birthday or anniversary. For others, it could be a day spent with friends or family members. But for those of us who have been lucky enough to spend time in the Bahamas, there's one day in particular that stands out above all the rest.
That day is when we first set foot in this paradise. For me it was the day I stepped off the boat, I were greeted by the most beautiful turquoise waters I had ever seen. The sand was soft and white, and the sun was shining down on me from a clear blue sky. I fell in love! I have repeated this feeling over and over agian each time I visit and each time I visit a new island or Cay๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ˜

We are often asked in the Bahamas, what are no-see-ums? Or What are these little red bites all over my legs? As the name suggests, no-see-ums are insects that are so small they are difficult to see and can leave a small bite mark behind. Expect to feel them around sunset.

They can be repelled using insect repellents such as DEET, eucalyptus oil, Skin So Soft, baby oil, Icaridin, or picaridin. My favorite is Repel 100 Insect Repellent, available on Amazon for under $8.00 it only takes one sq**rt in your hands rubbed together and lightly touching your legs and feet. Wash your hands after use :)

Treating the bites:
Treating no-see-um bites are similar to the mosquito protocol: wash the bite area with soap and warm water, apply rubbing alcohol, use over-the-counter products, and by all means, try not to scratch the itch.

Use Deodorant: If you have a stick of deodorant lying around, this can be another tool in stopping the no-see-um bites from itching. Apply the deodorant to the bites, and the aluminum chloride in the deodorant will help remove toxins and moisture away from the bites.

Mixing Baking Soda With Water To Make a Paste: Making a baking soda paste with warm water is a perfect home remedy for no-see-um bites. Gently apply the homemade cream over the affected areas to help any inflamed areas of skin and reduce itching.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿฌ ๐Ÿณ Short-finned pilot whales are mistaken for dolphins.

Short-finned pilot whales are often mistaken for dolphins due to their similar appearance. However, there are several key differences between the two species. Pilot whales are generally larger than dolphins, with males reaching up to 18 feet in length and weighing over 5,000 pounds. They also have a bulbous forehead with no perceptible beak, while dolphins have a more pointed head. Additionally, pilot whales have a faint grey diagonal stripe behind each eye and a grey โ€œsaddleโ€ behind and below the dorsal fin, unlike dolphins.

Short-finned pilot whales are prevalent in the waters around The Bahamas. They are seen year-round but are more abundant during spring and summer. However, these whales are not resident species and appear to have large-ranging patterns. Pilot whales in The Bahamas are known to travel up to 100 miles offshore and north as far as North Carolina. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿฌ ๐Ÿณ

๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ˜ S***m whales in the Bahamas! These whales are known to dive great depths (>3,000 feet) for more than an hour at a time where they feed on large squid, their primary prey. When a s***m whale prepares to dive, it raises its massive tail, allowing researchers to photograph the distinctive pattern of notches in the trailing edge of the tail flukes to aid in monitoring individuals over time. Adult females form nursery groups which are long-term social units made up of related females that can be found in The Bahamas year-round. Some of these females have been repeatedly seen in The Bahamas over the past 20 years. Mature males frequent the islands only during the winter breeding season and spend the rest of the year feeding in more productive Arctic waters.

This skeleton of a 52' s***m whale is located on Warderick Wells in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea National Park. S***m whales are found in The Bahamas year-round.

This video is very interesting on the size of s***m whales. https://vimeo.com/244375963 ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿ‘™ ๐Ÿ  ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ How To Avoid Touching Coral ๐Ÿ‘™ ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

Now, everywhere you snorkel you are going to have people telling you not to touch the coral, it's snorkeling etiquette 101. But how do you avoid it?

We have seen that many people stand on coral when they get tired or want a break from swimming. It feels natural to them to try to stand up to relax and talk together, or to take off their mask. Do not do this!

When in shallow waters, over a reef, we have developed a skill of laying on our backs when we are needing a break from being face down. It is super easy to relax on your back in salt-water. We talk to each other and look around this way.

And as an alternative to laying on our backs, in shallow areas we will sometimes tread water with our knees bent up close to our bodies to avoid touching anything. We have gotten so that we can relax in either position, talk, and adjust our face masks.

Practice it, it is a great skill to learn, and it saves the reefs. Be aware of your fins. Know if you are kicking something.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ Do you want to know why are sharks so crucial to our oceans?
One of my best days in the Bahamas was diving with the sharks and learning how gentle they can be.

Sharks keep our oceans healthy and strong.

Sharks stop disease from spreading by preying on the sick and dying. They keep populations strong and vibrant by taking out the weak and slow. Sharks are the major driving force behind natural selection in the ocean realm. Their presence often dictates behavior of other species, which in turn regulates how reef fish, sea turtles and other grazers behave. And that has consequences in how healthy reefs and sea grass beds are maintained.

No other animal (including humans) can do the job sharks perform so perfectly. Sharks and rays have evolved into roughly 500 different species, each of them adapted and specialized to function in a particular niche and layer of the ocean world. Check out the video What if there were no sharks? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAzxkDQFPe0&t=5s

๐Ÿฆˆ NURSE SHARKS SUCK UP THEIR FOOD.

Nurse sharks eat a variety of sea life, from conchs, squid, and sea urchins to bony fish. A cavity within the throat generates a powerful suction which vacuums hapless animals up into the nurse sharkโ€™s mouth, where rows of tiny, backward-curving teeth crush up the food.

The mouth works like a dental conveyor belt; new rows of teeth pop up towards the back and gradually push older ones forward until they fall out. How long an individual row lasts depends on the season. During the winter, a nurse shark will acquire a fresh row of teeth every 50 to 70 days. But in the summer, tooth row replacement occurs every 10 to 20 days.
