🌊 Did you know? 🌊
Conch (pronounced “konk”) is a tropical marine mollusk found throughout the waters of The Bahamas. While there are many kinds of conch around the world, the Queen conch is the most common in the Bahamas. 🐚🌴
Fun fact! Conchs have separate sexes and mate approximately 9 times a year, between March and October. Female conchs lay an egg mass of 500,000 eggs! In the wild, only one egg out of 500,000 usually matures into an adult.

Bahamian Slang SWITCHA: If it’s a hot day and someone offers you a glass of switcha, don’t refuse! “Switcha” is the Bahamian word for lemonade. In The Bahamas, it’s commonly made with limes instead of lemons. Either way, it’ll be delicious and refreshing!

🏴‍☠️ ☠️ 🥃 Bootlegging and smuggling have long been a part of the Bahamas' history. "Rum-running," or the smuggling of liquor over water, likely originated at the start of U.S Prohibition in 1920. Lasting until 1933, ships from the western Bahamas transported cheap Caribbean rum to Florida speakeasies and further north up the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Rum was cheap and made from sugarcane grown throughout the Caribbean.

Smuggling operations changed after Prohibition ended in 1933. Liquor was now transported from Nassau, which had become a major tourist destination, to Florida. This created what became known as the "Rum Line." Smugglers would unload their liquor at night on secluded beaches in Florida. Then, rum runners would use small boats to transport the liquor to larger ships waiting offshore.

Today Pale rum, amber rum, Buena Vista rum, and single barrel rum are all produced at John Watling’s distillery, which is known as “the spirit of The Bahamas.” 🏴‍☠️ ☠️ 🥃

🕵️ Do you want to know why are sharks so crucial to our oceans?
One of my best days in the Bahamas was diving with the sharks and learning how gentle they can be.

Sharks keep our oceans healthy and strong.

Sharks stop disease from spreading by preying on the sick and dying. They keep populations strong and vibrant by taking out the weak and slow. Sharks are the major driving force behind natural selection in the ocean realm. Their presence often dictates behavior of other species, which in turn regulates how reef fish, sea turtles and other grazers behave. And that has consequences in how healthy reefs and sea grass beds are maintained.

No other animal (including humans) can do the job sharks perform so perfectly. Sharks and rays have evolved into roughly 500 different species, each of them adapted and specialized to function in a particular niche and layer of the ocean world. 👩‍👩‍👦‍👦 🚴 🙋‍♀️ If you are used to spending your vacations in bustling cities full of people and activity, Staniel Cay will be a bit of a change of pace. The small cays in the Exumas are known for their laid-back atmosphere, friendly locals, and beautiful beaches. While it may be different from what you're used to, there's no need to worry - you'll quickly fall in love with the slower pace of life here.

One thing you may notice right away is that everyone seems to know each other. In such a small community, it's not uncommon for people to stop and chat when they pass one another on the street. Don't be surprised if strangers strike up a conversation with you - they're just being friendly!

Explore worlds where everything is eating…or being eaten, but fierce competition gives way to playful and funny creatures, just staking their claim. This a magical place where plants are sprinkled with shimmering dust and seahorses feed, almost without fear.

Dive the amazing caves and blue holes to find biological anomalies who thrive in dark waters saturated with hydrogen sulfide gas and low in oxygen. Pe*****te the tangle of Mangroves growing from a salty swamp that houses a nursery of fish and invertebrates until they are big enough, and smart enough, to compete on the coral reefs. Visit the beautiful beaches the Bahamas are famous for, shaped from sand flats in and out of the water: so ubiquitous, that creatures have evolved to hide in plain sight to survive. Experience day and night on a coral reef colony, and find out who is best hidden away when the sun goes down and the sharks come out. Discover the Bahamas from its tiny thimble jellyfish to the gigantic s***m whale and all the creatures in between.

📍 🇧🇸 👙 Natures Bubble Bath, now known as Rachel's Bubble Bath (reason unknown), located at the end of Compass Cay, is a serene lagoon that is perfect for relaxation. The pool gets its name from the action of the waves crashing over the rocks and into the lagoon, creating bubbles of white foam. The natural whirlpool bath is a great place to unwind and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The curly-tailed lizards are medium-sized lizards that can be found throughout the Bahamas. They can range in color from brown to grey, with some species having different markings depending on their habitat. The most distinct feature of these lizards is their tail which curls over their back, similar to a scorpion’s tail, earning them their nickname. They can live for many years and often grow quite large, with females sometimes outgrowing males. Often times two or more curly-tailed lizards will mate simultaneously, resulting in up to four eggs being laid at once!

🦀 🦀 🦀 The White and Black Land Crabs have been a food staple for Bahamians for decades. Whether they were prepared into the famous Bahamian crab n’ dough, or they were disjointed and served in rice, the high demand for these ten-legged creatures took a toll on populations.

“Crab Catching” is the activity of venturing into the coppice forests at night to capture land crabs by hand and put them into specialized carrying bags called Crocus sacks. These crabs will then be kept in specialized pens, fed water, and veggies and rice to clean them out and fatten them up before eating.
